Turkey car hire at five airports

Collect at Antalya, Dalaman, Milas-Bodrum or either Istanbul airport. A car driven in from another town carries its delivery charge inside the price.

Car hire around Turkey: its main airports and cities

Four searches, five airports. What changes for a driver from one to the next, with counts (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026) and drive times we routed on 23 October 2026.

Boats moored in the old harbour of Kaleici below the walls and red-roofed houses of Antalya's old town, under a blue sky

Antalya

The airport sits north-east of the city and joins it by the D400. Kaleiçi, the old town, is 15.5 km away, about 20 min.

The D400 takes you both ways from the airport: Kemer about 55 min, Side about 1 h, Alanya about 1 h 45 min.

767 of 943 airport cars had no delivery charge, the best ratio of the five airports. Lara and Konyaaltı are listed as pickup districts too, but all 63 cars there carried one.

Painted tour boats flying Turkish flags moored along a green river bank at Dalaman, under a sky with white clouds

Dalaman

Dalaman Airport is in Muğla province; its operator lists Dalaman, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Marmaris as the places nearby.

Routes leave on the D555 and pick up the D400: Göcek about 30 min, Fethiye about 1 h, Marmaris about 1 h 30 min.

Only 73 of 567 cars at the airport came without a delivery charge, so compare whole-hire totals there rather than day rates.

Gulets and sailboats in Bodrum marina with Bodrum Castle across the bay, under a bright blue sky

Bodrum

Milas-Bodrum Airport, operated by TAV Airports, is 19.3 km from Milas and 37.0 km by road from Bodrum castle (about 40 min), on the D330.

Turgutreis about 50 min, Yalıkavak about 55 min; north on the D525, Didim about 1 h 30 min and Kuşadası about 2 h.

428 of 453 airport cars were brought in from elsewhere for a charge, the largest share at any Turkish airport we read.

The domes and minarets of the Blue Mosque behind gardens, palm trees and a fountain, under a blue sky

Istanbul

Two airports: Istanbul Airport (IST), run by iGA with one terminal under a single roof, and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).

From IST our routes to Kadıköy and to Sabiha Gökçen cross the Bosphorus by motorway; from SAW the routes to Sultanahmet and Taksim go through the Eurasia Tunnel. City traffic is left out of every time.

IST had 83 of 104 cars with no delivery charge; SAW, 30 of 365.

Five airports in Turkey, and what delivery costs

Cars handed over at each airport (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). One delivery charge pays for bringing the car in and fetching it back, and it is part of the car’s quoted price.

Same car, two prices

In Turkey a company’s car can be listed in several cities and driven to whichever airport you pick. We priced a Fiat Egea on 23 October 2026 (Turkish quote, pickup 16 November, one week): €105 for the week at Antalya Airport with nothing added, €905 at Sabiha Gökçen, where €400 was charged for bringing it in and the same again for taking it away.

Who meets you

Even at one airport the handover style shifts from car to car. Quotes that named one said meet and greet, personal handover or shuttle bus; others named none. Your voucher settles it and carries the company’s number.

Landing at 03:00

Pricing 18 airport cars on 23 October 2026 with a 03:00 collection and 03:00 return (16 to 23 November), we found every one still bookable; 3 cost more than at 13:00. Search with your landing time.

The terminals

Antalya Airport runs round the clock all year, with a free shuttle between its two international terminals (Fraport TAV Antalya). Dalaman, in Muğla province, opened its second terminal on 5 July 2018 (YDA Dalaman). TAV Airports operates Milas-Bodrum, and iGA runs Istanbul Airport under a single roof.

Booking a car in Turkey: three steps

  1. Pick one of five airports

Antalya, Dalaman, Milas-Bodrum, Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen, or an address. A return in another Turkish city can be set in the same search.

  2. Compare cars by their total price

A car parked in another town is driven to you, and that charge is folded into its total, so two identical models can be priced far apart.

  3. Book online, pay the rest at pickup

Online you pay only the advance, set by the booking rules at 15 to 20% of the rental cost; on the cars quoted 23 October 2026, with collection on 16 November, it left out the delivery charge. The voucher email names the company and its number. The balance and any delivery charge are paid to the company at pickup, by the methods that car lists.

Cards, deposits and cash in four Turkish searches

Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum and Istanbul (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). One company’s offer can turn up in several cities, so the rows share cars and are never summed.

A credit card?

27 of 1,551 Antalya cars wanted one at pickup. The listing flags it before you pay, and only an embossed physical card that the lead driver holds will do.

Zero deposit

831 Antalya cars asked for none. Taking the top cover level can wipe it out on others, and the low-deposit filter also lets through cars with a small one.

Leaving the deposit in cash

703 Antalya cars allowed it, 45% of the search; the middle figure among the 19 places we set it against was 26%, and only 4 beat Antalya (the 16 November week, Antalya data read 23 October 2026). HGS tolls you run up are later deducted from that deposit (clause 12).

Paying the balance

On 23 October 2026, 2 of the 7 cars we opened one by one (pickup 16 November) wanted cash only on the day; the rest took cash or a card. Each listing names its methods.

Antalya Airport models and day rates

The 8 most-listed models among 767 Antalya Airport cars with no delivery charge (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). Middle is the median: half the cars cost that or less, half that or more.

  • Seven, eight or nine seats: lowest €29, middle €65 a day, 77 cars.
  • 552 of these cars capped the distance per day; the cap, and any paid unlimited-mileage extra, is printed on each car.
  • Kilometre caps are the Turkish habit to watch. Across the whole Antalya search only 436 of 1,551 cars (28%) had none, against a middle figure of 94% for the 13 destinations where we could read the cap reliably; just 2 came in lower (the 16 November week, Antalya data read 23 October 2026).
  • Delivery-charged cars are kept out of every figure here. For a summer week or your own dates, run the search.
  • Read those rankings loosely: the Antalya figures mix airport and town cars, whereas a few places in the comparison were read at their airport alone, so treat them as approximate.

  • Set the return city when you search; whatever the one-way costs is already included in the car’s total for the whole hire.
  • Part of that sum can be the cost of bringing the car to the airport in the first place, which is why one route shows such different totals.
  • We found no free one-way among the airport cars on these routes. Depending on the car, you hand it back at the other city’s airport or at an address there.

Drive times from Turkey’s five airports

Times are for empty roads with no breaks, rounded up from routes we mapped on 23 October 2026. Allow extra time on the coast in summer; the Istanbul figures ignore city traffic entirely.

Driving in Turkey: D-roads, motorways and HGS tolls

From KGM (the state highways authority), the Eurasia Tunnel’s operator and the national police, read 23 October 2026, with the rental terms beside them.

The roads themselves

  • KGM looks after 68,517 km of road, 3,796 km of it motorway with the build-operate-transfer motorways included, as counted on 1 January 2026.
  • Town streets belong to the municipality, village roads to the provincial administration and forest roads to the forestry ministry, so none of them is in that count.
  • On any of them, clause 8 allows only paved public roads for a Turkish hire car; the terms name no banned regions or routes beyond that.
  • The airport drives we routed in the south run on numbered D-roads: the D400, the D555 near Dalaman, the D330 towards Bodrum.
  • The police time cars between plate-reading cameras on some intercity state roads, the average-speed sections they announced in July 2022.

Tolls, and the tunnel under the Bosphorus

  • Motorway and Bosphorus bridge tolls go through HGS, an electronic pass system the PTT (Turkey’s post office) brought in in 2012. KGM gives prices only through its own calculator, so we quote none.
  • A pass left unpaid carries no fine if it is settled within 15 days; otherwise the fine can reach four times the toll (KGM; Law 6001 art. 30). On a hire car the company settles it, then takes the toll and an administrative charge from your deposit (clause 12). No Turkish listing on our 23 October 2026 check sold a toll extra, so ask at pickup how your car is set up.
  • The Eurasia Tunnel runs under the Bosphorus from Kumkapı, where Kennedy Caddesi meets it on the European side, to Koşuyolu on the Asian side and the D-100. There are no cash booths: ATAŞ, the operator, reads HGS at free-flow portals.
  • Inside it the limit is 70 km/h, policed in the tunnel and on its approaches. At peak hours the entry toll lanes can drop from three to two, and to one after an accident or breakdown. It takes light vehicles only, none taller than 2.80 m.

Driving in Turkey across the seasons, and after a crash

UK Foreign Office travel advice for Turkey (updated 19 October 2026), Turkish law and the rental terms.

  • Summer fires. The Foreign Office warns that wildfires are frequent in a Turkish summer and that starting a fire, or dropping a cigarette, in a risk area can bring a fine or prison. Report a fire on 112.
  • Storms. Severe rainstorms can flood roads and trigger landslides, damaging roads and bridges, the same advice says.
  • Winter. Winter tyres can be made compulsory province by province for part of the year (Highway Traffic Law, art. 65/A), with the fine on the vehicle’s operator, and the Ministry of Transport says snow chains do not stand in for them where they are required. A Winter Pack extra showed on 605 of 1,529 Antalya cars (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026); its listing does not say what is in it, so ask before you add it.
  • Remote roads and night. In the Foreign Office’s words the roads between major cities are generally excellent, but the surface can be poor in remote areas; it advises extra care at night.
  • Checkpoints. Slow down on the approach and follow what the security staff tell you (Foreign Office).
  • After a crash. Clause 6 comes before anything else. The rental company must hear from you at once, and you need a police report unless that company says otherwise. Miss either and the cover on the car falls away, with the full bill on you. Damage from deliberate vandalism or neglect is never covered (clause 7). Turkey’s emergency line, 112, covers ambulance, fire and police.
  • Fines. They are yours under clause 11. A fine not paid straight away is due within a month of notice, after which the law adds 5% a month, up to double the fine (Law 2918, art. 115).
  • Airport parking. Also yours (clause 11). Istanbul Airport’s car park takes HGS at its exit barriers; Sabiha Gökçen’s takes a credit card, online payment or cash; Antalya’s has over 5,500 spaces, three minutes’ walk from the terminals (the airport operators, read 23 October 2026).

Turkish traffic law in brief

Highway Traffic Law 2918 and its regulation (article given), plus the rental terms and British government travel advice for Turkey.

Lanes, limits and alcohol

  • Drive on the right; the leftmost lane is not a cruising lane (law, art. 46).
  • Car limits: towns 50 km/h, two-way rural roads 90, divided highways 110 (regulation, art. 100). Motorways: 130 on state-run motorways and 140 on toll-concession motorways for cars, always as signed (KGM, citing the Interior Ministry’s 2022 decision).
  • A motorway minimum of 40 km/h applies unless conditions make you slower (regulation, art. 100).
  • Turkish law caps alcohol at 0.5 per mille for private cars and 0.2 for other vehicles (law, art. 48; regulation, art. 97). UK advice says do not drink and drive at all, and that is the course to take.
  • Phones only hands-free (law, art. 73; regulation, art. 145); belts in all seats (law, art. 78; regulation, art. 150).
  • Headlights at night, in dim tunnels and in fog, snow or heavy rain; dipped beams by day when the weather turns (regulation, art. 126, 127).

Junctions, kit and fuel

  • Where a junction has no police officer, signs or lights, a driver coming out of a minor road gives way to traffic on the main road, and one joining a divided road gives way to traffic already on it (law, art. 57).
  • Two warning triangles and a fire extinguisher are compulsory in Turkish cars (regulation, Schedule 1, “Cetvel 1” in Turkish). Look for both before leaving the car park.
  • Return the tank at its pickup level. Turkish companies bill a shortfall at their own rate and keep any surplus without refund (clause 3), and the fuel itself is yours (clause 11).

Licence, permit and paperwork for Turkey

Your licence

Only the original national licence is accepted, with every detail also printed in Latin letters and still valid on your final rental day. Photocopies and phone licences are turned away (clause 14).

An IDP, for a licence valid only at home

A licence that is not valid outside its own country? The terms strongly recommend carrying an International Driving Permit, shown when asked. Turkish rules let visitors drive on a foreign licence for up to six months after entry, subject to international agreements (Highway Traffic Regulation, art. 88).

Driving on a British licence

Britain’s travel advice for Turkey: carry a 1968 International Driving Permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish. The 1949 permit no longer counts, and permits are sold only inside the UK.

A card, if the listing asks

A credit card must belong to the main driver and be real and embossed. A company may accept a debit card instead if it is likewise embossed and in that name; the booking and voucher then say so (clause 15).

Minimum age

Every car sets its own, and even two similar models may not match (clause 13). Across 7 cars opened on 23 October 2026, the lowest accepted age was 21 to 23 and licences needed 2 to 3 years.

A phone you will answer

The booking phone, with country code, must stay reachable, starting the day ahead of collection and lasting the whole hire; ring, Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram all count (clause 10).

Cover levels on Turkish rentals

Full Coverage Plus

1,322 of 1,529 Antalya cars offered the top tier (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). On the three cars we opened on 23 October 2026 that had both a deposit and this tier, the deposit dropped to zero at that level.

  • The levels run from Minimum coverage up through Basic and Full Coverage to Full Coverage Plus, and a given car may offer fewer of them. The listing prints the deposit next to each.
  • Standard insurance stops short of the windscreen, wheels, underbody and interior (clause 5).
  • Whatever level you take, it stands or falls on clause 6’s accident steps and clause 7’s exclusions, both in the crash notes further up.
  • On the cars we opened on 23 October 2026, Theft Protection came included on three and as a paid extra on one; personal accident cover is sold separately where offered.

Turkish rental cars stay in Turkey

What clause 9 says, and what our searches found.

Clause 9

It bans driving a rental car across Turkey’s borders, and no exception is written into it.

  • We found no cross-border package for Turkish cars on 23 October 2026, neither among the extras nor on any quote.
  • One-way searches (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026) returned nothing from Istanbul to Sofia (Bulgaria) or Thessaloniki (Greece), from Trabzon to Batumi in Georgia, or from Bodrum to Kos in Greece.
  • Putting the car on a ferry to a Greek island takes it out of Turkey, so clause 9 rules that out too.
  • For Greece, Bulgaria or Georgia, leave the car in Turkey and carry on by other means.

Choosing seats for a Turkish road trip

Hoping for an SUV

They are scarcer here than anywhere else we compared: 280 of 1,529 cars in the Antalya search (18%), against a middle figure of 28% across 18 destinations (the 16 November week, Antalya data read 23 October 2026). The class filter shows what is left on your dates.

Five to nine

77 Antalya Airport cars without a delivery charge had seven or more seats, lowest €29, middle €65 a day (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). Use the seat filter to list only those.

Groups over nine

Book two cars: in all four city searches the largest had 9 seats (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026).

Children

Infant seats, child seats and boosters can be added where the car offers them. Turkish law requires child restraints and belts in every seat (law, art. 78; regulation, art. 150).

Another driver

Written into the contract as an extra where offered; the car states the fee.

Cancelling or changing a Turkish booking

  • A Turkish booking can be cancelled with no penalty while at least 7 days remain before pickup, or 30 days for a luxury car or convertible. If your booking carries the short-notice cancellation option, the limit is 24 hours.
  • Cancel by email: “Cancel” as the title, voucher attached. Within 14 days you get the advance back less the non-refundable 6% payment service fee.
  • Cancel later than that, or not appear at pickup, and you forfeit the advance.
  • Bookings cannot be edited: for different dates or another model, cancel and book afresh, and the old car goes back on sale.
  • “Or similar” cars can arrive as a comparable model. Only 431 of 1,529 Antalya cars guaranteed the exact model (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026), and a search filter isolates them.
  • If force majeure such as a breakdown stops the company supplying your booked car, the terms entitle you to an equal or better class, for the money and conditions you booked.
  • Want it longer? Arrange that with the company while the hire is still running (clause 2). The minimum is 24 hours, so a short hire still costs one whole day (clause 1).

Turkey rental questions

Do Turkish rental companies insist on a credit card?

Some cars do: 27 of 1,551 Antalya cars, 24 of 1,210 in Dalaman, 17 of 1,157 in Bodrum and 17 of 1,096 in Istanbul wanted one at pickup (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). The listing shows it before you pay, and the lead driver then brings an embossed card of their own.

Are there Turkish rentals with no deposit?

Yes: 831 of the 1,551 Antalya cars (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). On some others the deposit disappears once you choose Full Coverage Plus, and each listing shows the deposit tier by tier.

Why is the same model dearer at some airports?

It has been driven in from another town, and that delivery charge is in its price. 428 of 453 cars at Milas-Bodrum, 335 of 365 at Sabiha Gökçen and 494 of 567 at Dalaman carried one, against 176 of 943 at Antalya (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026). Rank by total.

Could I take a Turkish hire car into Greece, Bulgaria or Georgia?

It is not allowed: the Turkey terms (clause 9) keep the car inside the country. On 23 October 2026 there was no cross-border package, and one-way searches from Istanbul to Sofia or Thessaloniki, Trabzon to Batumi and Bodrum to Kos found nothing.

Will a Turkish rental desk want an International Driving Permit?

Strongly advised by the terms when your licence works only in its country of issue. For a UK licence, government travel advice says to carry a 1968 permit or a licence notarised in Turkish, and says the 1949 permit is no longer accepted.

How are HGS tolls charged on a hire car?

Motorways, the Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia Tunnel bill through HGS, with no cash booth in the tunnel. The company pays what you ran up and takes it, plus an administrative charge, from your deposit (clause 12). Ask at pickup how your car handles it.

How old must drivers be for a Turkish rental?

It varies by car, even between similar models. Looking at 7 Turkish cars on 23 October 2026, minimum ages ran 21 to 23, with 2 to 3 years of licence wanted.

Can I drop the car in a different Turkish city?

Yes, on the routes we tried, with the charge inside the total. Antalya Airport to Dalaman cost lowest €60, middle €150; Dalaman Airport to Bodrum, lowest €120, middle €350 (Turkey, 16 to 23 November 2026; listings dated 23 October 2026).

How fast can I drive in Turkey?

Inside towns 50 km/h; outside them, 90 on two-way roads and 110 on divided ones; on motorways 130 on state-run motorways and 140 on toll-concession motorways, always as signed.
