Cyprus car hire: driving on the left

Pick up at Larnaca or Paphos airport and drive on the left. Northern Cyprus and unpaved roads, such as in Akamas, are ruled out.

Car hire around Cyprus: two airports, ten towns

Counts and median day rates from our 22 October 2026 read of seven-day hires from 16 November 2026; one company can deliver to several towns, so the counts overlap and never add up. Drive times are routed without traffic and rounded up.

The stone church of St Lazarus with its tall bell tower under a clear blue sky

Larnaca

The eastern airport: from the terminal, the seafront at Finikoudes is about 15 min, Nicosia about 45 min and Limassol about 1 h.

Its median day rate, €42, was the lowest of these ten towns. Every Larnaca car in the count that wanted a credit card was handed over at the airport.

The squat stone Paphos Castle at the end of the harbour, with waves breaking on the rocks and white clouds in a blue sky

Paphos

The western airport: Paphos harbour is about 25 min away, Coral Bay about 40 min and Polis about 1 h.

Day rates ran above Larnaca’s in all three weeks we sampled; the November median was €52.

Aerial view of Limassol Marina with yachts in turquoise water, the breakwater and the city along the coast

Limassol

No airport handover here: about 55 min from Paphos Airport, about 1 h from Larnaca’s. The tourism authority calls it the island’s maritime capital, with the main commercial port.

360 cars, 285 by delivery and 75 from an office. Our booking partner lists a St Raphael Marina Port pickup, but no car offered it in the weeks we read.

Aerial view of pale rocky sea cliffs with a footpath along the top, above clear turquoise water

Ayia Napa

About 50 min from Larnaca Airport, almost all of it on the motorway.

334 cars, all delivered or from an office. Cape Greco, listed in clause 11 as Kavo Gkreko National Park, is one of the named places whose unpaved roads are out.

Aerial view of a curved sandy bay with turquoise water and boats, edged by pale rocky ground

Protaras

Roughly an hour from Larnaca Airport; from Paphos Airport, allow about 2 h 30 min.

All 253 cars counted came by delivery, 19 of them manual. The clause 11 ban on Kavo Gkreko National Park matters on this stretch of coast too.

Aerial view of a small sandy cove with sun loungers around clear turquoise water

Paralimni

About 50 min (60.1 km) from Larnaca Airport.

Delivery only: 155 cars, 18 with a manual gearbox and 36 with no deposit.

Rooftops of central Nicosia with old and modern buildings under a clear blue sky

Nicosia

The inland capital, both a walled old city and a modern business hub: about 45 min from Larnaca Airport, about 2 h from Paphos’s.

Only 17 of its 180 cars had no deposit, the smallest share of the ten. In the Lefkosia (Nicosia) area, most stations close for attendant service on Wednesday afternoon rather than Tuesday afternoon.

Coral Bay

About 40 min (30 km) from Paphos Airport.

All 136 cars counted were automatics, every one delivered. The tourism authority’s boat trips from Paphos harbour call here and at Lara Beach, whose unpaved roads clause 11 rules out (it names Turtle beach LaraBay).

Polis

An hour or so from Paphos Airport; from Larnaca’s, budget about 2 h 30 min.

A small pool of 55 delivery cars, every one automatic, and the highest median day rate of the ten, €89.

Latchi

Roughly 1 h 15 min out of Paphos Airport, on the harbour the tourism authority lists as Polis (Latsi).

71 cars, all delivered. Boat trips from here follow the western Akamas coast from May to October, weather permitting; by car, clause 11 rules out the Akamas Reserve.

Only Larnaca and Paphos have airport handovers; the tourism authority adds that four-lane motorways link Nicosia with Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa, with emergency phones along them.

Booking a Cyprus hire car in three steps

  1. Pick the right end of the island

Larnaca Airport suits Nicosia and the east coast, Paphos Airport the west; every other town gets its cars by delivery or from an office. Flying home from the other airport? Set it as the drop-off.

  2. Read the card, deposit and cover lines

Our 22 October 2026 tally of seven-day hires from 16 November 2026 found 10 of 485 Larnaca cars asking for a credit card, while 164 of the 358 handed over at Larnaca Airport carried an airport pickup charge inside the price; check both lines and the deposit, then pay the online part.

  3. Meet the company on the voucher

Our email voucher names the company, its number and the meeting point. Bring your licence, pay the balance there, and set off on the left.

Collecting the car at Larnaca or Paphos airport

Larnaca and Paphos airports are some 125 km apart by road, a drive of about 1 h 45 min each way.

Cars at the two airports

Our 22 October 2026 count for seven-day hires from 16 November 2026: 358 of 485 Larnaca-search cars were offered at Larnaca Airport (LCA), and 293 of 445 Paphos-search cars at Paphos Airport (PFO). The others came by city delivery or from an office.

Airport pickup charges

Even with a return to the same airport, 164 of those 358 at Larnaca and 195 of 293 at Paphos included an airport pickup fee. It is part of the total shown and is paid at pickup.

Landing at 3 a.m.

The terminals run around the clock; rental companies keep their own hours. We priced 30 cars per airport for a 03:00 pickup on 16 November 2026, prices taken 22 October 2026: 24 at Larnaca and 19 at Paphos added a fee. Enter your real landing time and any such fee appears in the total.

Finding the company

At Larnaca and Paphos the meeting arrangement is set by each company, not by the airport; the voucher explains it and lists a number, and clause 12 wants you on the phone from the eve of collection, by call or on Telegram, Viber or WhatsApp.

Cards, deposits and cash at Larnaca and Paphos

Counted 22 October 2026: seven-day rentals from 16 November 2026, Larnaca and Paphos.

  • Credit card needed10 of 485 in Larnaca; 4 of 445 in Paphos
  • No deposit157 Larnaca cars; 156 Paphos cars
  • Deposit taken in cash190 in Larnaca; 208 in Paphos
  • Advance paid online15 to 20%, based on the hire price

When a card is asked forEvery car in that count wanting a credit card was an airport pickup. You must show the card itself, embossed and issued to the main driver. In some cases a company accepts a debit card that meets those conditions; the listing and voucher say which.

Cash for the deposit190 of Larnaca’s 485 cars accept a cash deposit, about 1.5 times the middle share in our 19-destination table (16 to 23 November 2026 hires, read 22 October 2026), and 208 of Paphos’s 445 do. Each listing also states its own deposit amount, and the deposit filter narrows the results.

The balanceThe online part is calculated on the hire charge only. Whatever remains, plus any airport pickup charge, goes to the company when you collect.

Driving in Cyprus: keep left, give way to the right

Sources: the EU’s Your Europe page (Cyprus figures last checked 18 September 2024), the tourism authority, the rental terms and the road traffic regulations as consolidated in March 2013 (the newest text we could read); all read 23 October 2026.

Left side, right-hand wheel

  • The EU names three member states that drive on the left: Cyprus, Ireland and Malta. Signs stand on the left-hand verge, with distances in kilometres and limits in km/h (tourism authority).
  • Clause 8 puts the steering wheel on the right; the odd left-hand-drive car carries a flag on its booking card.
  • The tourism authority gives 100 km/h on motorways, where 65 km/h is the minimum, 80 km/h on other roads and, in built-up areas, 50 km/h; the Cyprus figures on Your Europe add 30 km/h in pedestrian zones. Signs override all of these.
  • Drink-driving: the blood limit is 0.5 mg/ml for most drivers and 0.2 mg/ml for anyone with under three years’ driving experience, per the Cyprus figures on Your Europe; the Road Safety Law (art. 5(2)(a)) puts the breath limit at 22 µg per 100 ml.
  • Self-drive cars wear red plates that often begin with a Z, which is why the tourism authority calls them “Z cars”.

Lanes and roundabouts, by the 2013 text

  • On a two-lane motorway carriageway you sit in the left lane. The right lane is for overtaking, or when the left is not free, and only for as long as that takes.
  • Overtaking is done on the right. Passing on the left is not allowed, except in queues on multi-lane roads where the right lane is moving slower.
  • Roundabouts: give way to vehicles coming from your right, unless markings say otherwise. Junctions with no signs, or with lights out or flashing amber, work the same way.
  • Indicators go by exit. First exit: signal left as you enter. Second: no signal on entry. Third: signal right on entry. From the second exit on, signal left once you pass the exit before yours. Where the entry has two or more lanes, take the first exit from the left lane and the third from the right lane.
  • Leaving by a single-lane exit, give way to whatever is circling on the roundabout’s left-hand side.
  • Inside town or village limits the horn stays silent unless it is absolutely necessary.

Troodos snow, summer fires and fuel stops

From the tourism authority and the UK Foreign Office pages, both checked 23 October 2026. None of this is a rental term; the terms still rule out unpaved roads.

  • Snow up high: winters are mild with rain, and snow falls on the Troodos mountains, usually starting before Christmas, and February is the tourism authority’s month for skiing there. Mount Olympus, the top of the range, stands at 1,952 metres.
  • Mountain roads: the Troodos is a chain of villages on winding roads, and Larnaca’s hinterland climbs into the same range, with narrow village streets at places such as Lefkara. On our routing, Platres sits roughly 1 h 15 min out of Paphos Airport and 1 h 45 min out of Larnaca Airport; treat both mountain figures as minimums.
  • Minor and forest roads: the tourism authority calls the main roads fairly good and asks for care on minor and forest roads, above all in wet weather. Those roads are still largely unsurfaced, and clause 9 keeps the car on paved public roads.
  • Fuel in the hills: stations thin out in the mountains and villages, so the tourism authority tells drivers to set off with enough fuel for the round trip.
  • Station hours: vending machines run outside attended hours, at weekends and on public holidays; most stations close for attendant service on Sunday and Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday afternoon in the Lefkosia (Nicosia) area. The pumps sell 95 and 98 unleaded by the litre.
  • Fire season: April to October is high wildfire season in the Foreign Office’s Cyprus advice, which also suggests signing your phone up for emergency alerts.
  • Glare and fog: the tourism authority advises sunglasses against the bright Mediterranean sky; fog is rare and mostly early in the morning.
  • Town rush hours: about 07:30 to 08:00 and 13:00 to 15:30, then 17:00 to 18:00 in winter or 18:00 to 19:00 in summer, says the tourism authority.

Why you cannot drive to Northern Cyprus

Crossing to the north is ruled out by the terms, whatever you add at booking.

The clause

Clause 10 bans taking the rental car into Northern Cyprus outright. No other clause lets a company agree an exception.

The insurance

The tourism authority notes that hire-car cover only applies in areas the Republic of Cyprus controls.

The routes on this page

None of the drive times or one-way returns on this page crosses into the north.

No ferry either

For the time being there is no ferry connection between Cyprus and other countries, the tourism authority says; the boat trips it lists from Limassol, Paphos, Latchi, Ayia Napa and Larnaca Marina (May to October, weather permitting) carry passengers, not cars.

Visiting the north? Leave the car behind

If a visit north is on your list, the rental stays behind; the terms give no way round clause 10.

Akamas, Avakas and other unpaved roads you cannot drive

Clauses 9 and 11 of the Cyprus terms.

  • Clause 9: paved public roads, nothing else.
  • Clause 11 then bans unpaved roads of any kind, “including, but not limited the following territories and roads to these places”:
    • Akamas Reserve
    • Avakas Gorge
    • Turtle beach LaraBay
    • Blue Lagoon
    • Waterfall Bath Adonis
    • Kavo Gkreko National Park
  • None of the six is among the drive times on this page: we routed nothing to them or along the roads that lead there.

Airport kerbs, yellow lines and where not to park

Hermes Airports’ price list for both airports and the tourism authority’s parking notes, read 22 October 2026. Clause 13 leaves every parking charge with you.

Picking someone up

Use P2 at Larnaca or P1 at Paphos, opposite the terminal: €1.00 for up to 20 minutes.

Dropping someone off

Larnaca’s departures kerb is free for a 1-minute stop. Paphos gives 5 free minutes in its drop-off area, then charges €10.00.

Longer stays

Airport car parks are self-park with number-plate recognition; the price bands are on the airport’s list.

Yellow lines in town

A double yellow line means no parking or waiting; a single one allows loading and unloading only. Meters in town centres cost about €1 to €2 an hour on weekdays in office hours, says the tourism authority.

Keep clear of

Under the road traffic regulations as consolidated in March 2013 (the newest text we could read): no parking within 10 m of a junction, 50 m of traffic lights or 15 m of a marked crossing or bus stop unless a bay is marked there, never on a pavement or pedestrian street, and never across the way in or out of a fire or police station, bank, church, mosque, hospital, school or car park.

Fuel on return

Clause 3: the gauge should read what it read at pickup. The company charges for any missing fuel at its own price, and a fuller tank earns no refund.

Breakdowns, bumps and police stops

Rental terms first, then the official numbers and rules.

After a bump or a theft

Clause 6 asks for two things: an immediate call to the rental company, and a Cyprus police report (the agent may waive the report). Skip one of those steps and the cover lapses, so the whole bill lands on you.

Emergency numbers

Ambulance, fire and police all answer on 112, and the tourism authority says English is spoken on the emergency lines.

Stopped on the motorway

Under the road traffic regulations as consolidated in March 2013 (the newest text we could read), the hard shoulder is for breakdowns and emergencies only, and a car may not stay there beyond 24 hours. Put a reflective triangle on the shoulder about 50 metres behind the car, and tell the police straight away if the car sticks out into the lane. No U-turns on a motorway, and no reversing except to move off.

Two triangles

The same 2013 text has every car carry two red reflective warning triangles. The UK’s travel advice tells anyone hiring to check the vehicle has the right safety equipment, so look in the boot at pickup.

A siren behind you

Under the same 2013 text, when a police car, fire engine, ambulance or other listed emergency vehicle comes up with its siren on (with or without flashing lights), pull in as close to the edge or kerb as you can and stop until it has gone by, unless a uniformed officer signals otherwise.

Police checks and fines

The 2013 text has you stop when a uniformed officer asks and let them look at the car. For listed offences (not speeding more than 75% over the limit), an officer may offer an out-of-court settlement: a notice offering a fine plus penalty points, with no prosecution if the fine is paid and a declaration accepting the points is signed within 105 days (Law 86/1972, art. 20Α(3), May 2025 consolidation). Clause 13 makes fines the renter’s to pay.

Breakdown help

The tourism authority says private companies run a 24-hour breakdown service across the island. The voucher carries the rental company’s own number.

Want a manual? Only 33 of the 485 Larnaca cars had a manual gearbox in that window, against 452 automatics. Median: half the cars cheaper, half dearer.

  • Small cars lead: 259 of the 485 Larnaca cars sat in our booking partner’s compact class (our Economy tile), the second-highest share in our 18-destination comparison (our 22 October 2026 read).
  • SUVs are thin on the ground: 92 of 485, the second-lowest share of those 18 (same 22 October 2026 data).
  • Electric and hybrid cars: 55 of 485, ranked second-highest by share among 18 destinations (counted 22 October 2026).
  • Convertibles: 18 of 485, about 2 times the middle share of 18 destinations (22 October 2026 figures). Booking one moves the no-penalty cancelling cut-off to 30 days before pickup.

All four compare 16 to 23 November 2026 hires. The Larnaca search counts airport and town-delivered cars, while some destinations we compare are airport-only searches, and our booking partner may file a car under two classes, so treat these as a guide to the mix rather than exact shares.

November, January and June day rates compared

  • Larnaca’s median held at €42 a day in both the November and the January week.
  • Paphos came out dearer in all three weeks; in November its median was €52 against €42 at Larnaca.
  • Only 228 Larnaca cars showed for the June week, against 485 in November, because companies had not yet listed next summer’s cars. Read the June row as an early sample, not the summer rate.

  • Between the airports: 204 Larnaca Airport cars could be returned at Paphos Airport, and 204 could do the reverse.
  • The charge follows the place, not the direction: one Nissan March carried an identical €18 on a Larnaca round trip and on a one-way to Paphos Airport.

Licence, permit, age and phone: what Cyprus companies ask for

  • Licence: your original national licence, in the Latin alphabet and valid until your return day. No copies or phone-app versions.
  • International Driving Permit: clause 15 recommends one strongly when your licence counts only in its home state.
  • UK licences: gov.uk’s permit table says a UK photocard licence can be used in Cyprus for up to 30 days without an IDP, while a paper-only licence may first need replacing or a permit (read 23 October 2026). Clause 15 still decides what the company accepts.
  • Your passport stays with you: the UK’s travel advice for Cyprus calls handing over a passport as a rental deposit illegal and says never to do it.
  • Credit or debit card: only for listings that ask, and then the main driver’s own embossed card, brought with you.
  • Age: set listing by listing. On the 8 Larnaca cars we checked in detail on 22 October 2026, the minimum driver age was between 20 and 27, each wanting 3 years of licence. The tourism authority asks drivers under 25 with under three years of licence to tell the company so young-driver cover is set up; 283 of 485 Larnaca cars offered a “Young driver (21-25 y.o., 3+ years experience)” extra for seven-day hires from 16 November 2026, checked 22 October 2026.
  • Your mobile: on the phone number you booked with, international code and all, the whole time from the day before you pick the car up until you return it, by a call, or a message on Telegram, Viber or WhatsApp.
  • Voucher: it carries the company name, its number and the meeting place.

Insurance levels on a Cyprus rental

Four levels, and what none of them covers.

  • From the top down, a listing may offer Full Coverage Plus, SuperCDW (Full Coverage), CDW (Basic coverage) or TPL (Minimum coverage). Full Coverage Plus appeared on 184 of 485 Larnaca cars and 168 of 445 Paphos cars for seven-day hires from 16 November 2026, per our 22 October 2026 read.
  • On some cars a higher level reduces the deposit, sometimes to nothing; the deposit is shown on each car before payment.
  • Standard cover excludes four things: wheels, windscreen, interior and undercarriage.
  • Every level depends on the clause 6 call and police report set out under breakdowns and bumps above.
  • Vandalism, neglect and deliberate damage are excluded.
  • Cover is valid only where the Republic of Cyprus has control, the tourism authority notes.
  • The Cyprus extras list also names two covers that sit outside the four levels (one for theft, one for personal accidents); each car shows whether it offers them.

Seats for families and larger parties in Cyprus

  • Couples and small families: 402 of the 485 Larnaca cars had five seats (Larnaca search of 22 October 2026, the 16 November week); pick one whose boot takes your cases.
  • Groups of five to nine: a seven-, eight- or nine-seat people carrier. Larnaca listed 59 and Paphos 65 for seven-day hires from 16 November 2026; Larnaca vans and minivans started at €38 a day, median €74 (class prices from 22 October 2026), and the seats filter will show them.
  • Ten travellers upwards: plan on two cars; no car in that window had more than 9 seats.
  • Young children: reserve a seat or booster with the car, since anyone under 150 cm needs a restraint for their weight.
  • Extra driver: “The second driver in the contract” is on the Cyprus extras list; each car shows whether it offers it and at what price.

Cancelling, changing or extending a Cyprus booking

  • Cancelling carries no penalty until a week before pickup (30 days for a convertible or luxury car), or up to 24 hours before if you took the 24-hour cancel extra at booking; either way, you lose the 6% payment service charge. That option came with 338 of 485 Larnaca cars for the 16 November week (counted 22 October 2026).
  • Cancel by email: subject line “Cancel”, voucher as an attachment. Your advance, less its 6% payment service fee, returns inside 14 days of the request.
  • A late cancellation or a no-show costs you the advance.
  • To move the dates or swap the car, cancel this booking and make another.
  • Listings tagged “Or similar” may arrive as a comparable model; 229 of 485 Larnaca listings had the tag in that read, and the “Guaranteed car model” filter hides them.
  • If a breakdown or force majeure means the booked car is not available, you are owed a replacement in that class or above, at the price and terms you booked.
  • Want an extra day? Clause 2 of the Cyprus terms asks you to tell the company in advance; under clause 1 each day is a 24-hour block, so a few hours over counts as another day.

Cyprus car rental FAQ

Is a credit card required for car hire in Cyprus?

Only on the cars that say so. Our 22 October 2026 count for seven-day hires from 16 November 2026 found 10 such cars among 485 in Larnaca and 4 among 445 in Paphos. Those listings flag it up front; bring the embossed card itself, issued to the main driver. Some companies settle for a debit card meeting that standard.

Are there hire cars in Cyprus with no deposit?
