Bali car hire: traffic keeps left

Pick up at Bali airport or get the car delivered. Traffic keeps left, and the car cannot leave Bali for Lombok or Nusa Penida.

Booking a Bali hire car in four steps

  1. Airport or hotel town

Search Denpasar to collect at the airport, or name a town such as Seminyak or Ubud and the car comes to you.

  2. Look past the headline price

On Bali the delivery charge to your town is already in each price, but on the Honda Brio we priced the only cover level sat outside the listed total. Compare the final total.

  3. Book online with the advance

You pay only the advance online. The airport’s own pages list no car rental desks, so the emailed voucher’s meeting spot, company name and phone are what you follow on arrival.

  4. Collect the car

Show your original licence (the Indonesia terms accept no copies or electronic licences), plus an International Driving Permit if you have one, and pay the balance by a method that car lists.

Car hire around Bali: the airport, the south and the towns inland

From the 23 October 2026 searches for Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026, drive times we routed over clear Bali roads on 23 October 2026 (read them as floors, not promises) and the Bali transport agency’s 2023 list of roads and areas prone to jams.

  • Bali is one pool of 120 cars in the Denpasar search. Every car listed under Kuta, Ubud or another town was one of those 120, offered again for delivery there, so the town counts below overlap; never add them up.
  • No town had cars of its own. Name a town as the pickup and the car is brought to you, or handed over where the search says.

Denpasar and the airport (DPS)

The airport sits in Tuban, about 13 km south of central Denpasar by its operator’s account (read 23 October 2026), and 62 of the 120 cars in the Denpasar search start there. Puputan Badung square in the city is roughly 20 min away; the Ngurah Rai bypass and the Pesanggaran junction both appear on the Bali transport agency’s 2023 list of roads and areas prone to jams.

A lone surfer paddling out through turquoise waves at Kuta Beach under a clear sky

Kuta

Kuta Beach is roughly 10 min from the airport pickup point. 50 of the 107 Kuta cars named a rental office, with no address, and 39 folded in a delivery charge. Jalan Pantai Kuta and the Kuta beach area are both on the agency’s jam list.

A green rice field with a small hut in Seminyak, with a building behind and white clouds in a blue sky

Seminyak

Roughly 15 min to the Seminyak area, timed to the village boundary rather than a street. Every one of the 107 cars offered for Seminyak came by delivery, 89 of 107 with the charge already in the price.

Aerial view of the Canggu shore with waves on the sand, a beach club and the town spreading inland

Canggu

Roughly 25 min to the Canggu area. Our Tanah Lot temple route, roughly 35 min in all, also runs along Jalan Raya Canggu, and the agency lists both Canggu and Tanah Lot as places where traffic tends to jam.

Bare driftwood branches lying on the sand of Jimbaran beach with the sea behind under a pale sky

Jimbaran

Roughly 15 min to the Jimbaran area; our route takes the Ngurah Rai bypass, not the toll road. 89 of 107 cars offered there had a delivery charge for Jimbaran built into the price.

Aerial view of a white sand beach between palm trees and clear turquoise water at Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua

Our routing reaches the Nusa Dua toll exit in roughly 15 min, over the toll road, so the toll is yours to pay (clause 11). No time was measured to the resort area or any hotel; allow for the drive beyond the exit.

Aerial view of the green-topped cliffs of Uluwatu dropping into a turquoise sea with white surf

Uluwatu

Uluwatu Temple is roughly 30 min from the airport. Only 34 cars were offered for Uluwatu, none of them without a deposit, and all 34 carried a delivery charge.

A traditional Balinese gazebo on a stone point beside the calm sea at Sanur, under a soft blue sky

Sanur

Roughly 25 min to the Sanur area, by the Ngurah Rai bypass. 6 cars in the Sanur search could be collected at Sanur Port, and the stretch from Sanur beach to the harbour is on the agency’s jam list.

Aerial view of the green Tegallalang rice terraces and palm trees near Ubud

Ubud

Ubud’s palace is roughly 40 min inland from the airport. Jalan Raya Ubud, the road past Goa Gajah and the Ubud area itself all feature on the agency’s jam list. 86 of 104 Ubud cars had a delivery charge built in.

Singaraja and Lovina

The north coast lies over the mountains: 1 h 15 min or more to Singaraja (timed to the map point for Buleleng regency rather than the town centre) and 1 h 30 min or more to Lovina, with nothing allowed for bends, climbs or villages. Every one of the 98 cars offered for Singaraja carried a delivery charge.

Outrigger boats moored in Padangbai harbour below green hills, under a blue sky with clouds

Padangbai

The harbour town is roughly 50 min by road. Padangbai Port was the handover point for 13 of the 25 cars offered there, every one with a deposit; the car itself stays on Bali (clause 9).

Picking up at Bali airport (DPS)

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport lies in Tuban, Badung, about 13 km south of central Denpasar, according to its operator InJourney Airports (checked 23 October 2026).

Cars waiting at the terminal

Bali’s 23 October 2026 search (pickup 16 November 2026, seven days) showed 62 of 120 cars with the airport as their usual pickup point. Of those, 39 asked no deposit and 29 had seven seats. Delivery accounted for 45 more and a rental office for 13.

No rental desks listed

The airport’s own transport guide covers taxis, ride-hailing, transport firms and public transport but names no car rental, so head for the spot on your voucher. Some cars we priced were meet-and-greet. A free buggy links the domestic and international terminals around the clock, the airport says.

Landing at night

Enter your real arrival time. On 23 October 2026 we priced 16 airport cars with both pickup and return set at 03:00 (same November rental): 2 charged extra for the hour, the others nothing, and every one stayed bookable. Any pickup fee shows before you book; the 4 airport cars priced for midday carried none.

Two multi-storey car parks

The airport lists 1,011 spaces at the domestic terminal and 730 at the international one (checked 23 October 2026). Bring the car back to the spot your voucher names; ask the company whether its handover uses the public car parks and who pays the ticket.

Driving in Bali: the toll road over the sea, the bypass and the jam spots

From the toll road’s operator, the Bali transport agency and UK travel advice, each read 23 October 2026, plus the rental terms.

The toll road over the sea

The Bali Mandara toll road links the airport area with Nusa Dua and Benoa, and its operator, PT Jasamarga Bali Tol, calls it Indonesia’s longest toll road over the sea. Inaugurated on 23 September 2013, it runs 12.7 km with its access roads and has 3 toll gates. The operator publishes Rp14,000 for Golongan I, the first of its 6 vehicle classes, under Ministerial Decree 769/KPTS/M/2024, in force since 27 April 2024 (read 23 October 2026).

Our routed drive from the airport to the Nusa Dua exit uses it; the Sanur and Jimbaran routes keep to the Ngurah Rai bypass instead. The operator’s services page mentions a digital payment system without saying whether cash is taken, so ask the company how its car pays. Toll call centre: 133.

Where Bali’s traffic jams, by the agency’s own list

The Bali transport agency (Dinas Perhubungan) names roads prone to jams in a list uploaded in June 2023, among them the Ngurah Rai bypass, Jalan Pantai Kuta and the Pesanggaran junction in Denpasar; Jalan Raya Ubud and the stretch by Goa Gajah; Jalan Raya Mengwi and Kapal; and the road from Penelokan to Kintamani. Its areas add Canggu, Kuta beach, Ubud, Tanah Lot, Sanur beach to the harbour, Bedugul, Kintamani and Amed beach. Our drive times leave traffic out, so add time around these.

Scooters, and the wet months

The FCDO (the UK Foreign Office) writes that “Traffic discipline is very poor and there has been a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents”, and it names Bali. The FCDO says Indonesia’s rainy season usually runs from October to March, and that Bali can suffer severe localised flooding causing major traffic congestion (public update 18 September 2026, read 23 October 2026).

The mountains in the middle, and paved roads only

Under clause 8 a Bali hire car may use paved public roads only; the clause names no road or region beyond that. The mountains of central Bali sit between the airport and the north coast, which is why the Singaraja and Lovina drives in the cards above take longer than the distance suggests.

Fuel, the kit the law requires, a crash, and the day Bali stops

The rental terms first, then Indonesian law and UK travel advice (public update 18 September 2026, read 23 October 2026).

  • Fuel: the tank should match its pickup level. Any gap costs whatever the company charges for fuel, and extra fuel earns nothing back (clause 3); fuel, Bali parking, fines and the toll road fall to the driver under clause 11. Tolls and the airport car parks charge in rupiah, Indonesia’s currency per Bank Indonesia, while the search quotes the car in US dollars.
  • What should be in the car: Indonesian law requires cars to carry seat belts, a spare tyre, a warning triangle, a jack, a wheel brace and first-aid equipment (UU 22/2009, art. 57(3)); check the boot for them at pickup.
  • After a crash: Bali’s clause 6 wants a call to your rental firm right after an insured event, plus a police report; only the firm can waive that report. Without both, clause 6 cancels the cover and the whole bill is yours. The FCDO adds that you must wait at the scene for the police, then report it at a police station, and warns: “Foreign nationals involved in even minor traffic violations or accidents may be vulnerable to extortion.”
  • Numbers to save: ambulance 118, fire 112, police 110, as the UK government lists them.
  • Nyepi, Balinese New Year: the FCDO says custom keeps everyone on Bali indoors for a day of silence and the airport closes for the whole day. Its advice gives only 19 March 2026 as a date; check the date against your trip and ask the company whether it touches your rental.

Road rules in Bali: drive on the left, wear a seat belt

Each rule gives its article in Indonesia’s traffic law (UU 22/2009) or the speed regulation (PP 79/2013), checked 23 October 2026.

  • Drive on the left (UU 22/2009, art. 108(1)); use the right side to overtake or when police tell you to (art. 108(2)).
  • National speed limits under PP 79/2013, art. 23: expressways 100 km/h, with a minimum of 60 km/h when traffic is moving; intercity roads 80; urban areas 50; residential streets 30. Signs show the limit and may set it lower (art. 23(5), 24; UU 22/2009, art. 21(3)).
  • The law requires every driver to concentrate fully (art. 106(1)): do not drink and drive.
  • Belts for driver and front passenger (art. 106(6)).
  • Headlights at night and in certain conditions (art. 107(1)); the daytime-lights rule covers motorcycles.

Documents and driver requirements for Bali

National licence

The original only, with details in Latin script, and valid until the last day of the rental; a copy or a digital version will not be accepted on Bali.

International Driving Permit

Bali’s rental terms strongly recommend one for licences that only count in their home country, and the company can ask to see it. For a UK licence: the UK travel advice (public update 18 September 2026) says a UK licence alone does not let you drive in Indonesia, while a UK-issued permit does; GOV.UK’s permit page (updated 29 January 2025) lists the 1968 permit. Both read 23 October 2026.

Minimum age

Set car by car, and the same model can differ. Across 6 Bali cars priced on 23 October 2026 for Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026: minimum age 18 to 21, licence held 1 to 2 years.

Documents to carry

The police may ask for your licence and the STNK registration (UU 22/2009, art. 106(5)); the UK government says to keep your passport or stay permit on you at all times.

A card, only if asked

When a company wants one, the credit card must be physical, embossed, and carrying the lead driver’s name; debit is fine on identical terms if the voucher allows.

A phone you will answer

Give a phone number, with country code, and keep it on for calls as well as Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram on Bali, from the day before pickup right up to when you return the car.

Insurance on Bali hire cars

Levels across the 120 Bali cars (rental dates Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026; numbers from the 23 October 2026 count), plus the four gaps no level fills.

Check the liability, not just the cover name

Among the cars we priced, Full Coverage on one cut the liability to zero for a fee; on another, Full Coverage cost extra yet showed the same liability as the cheaper levels. Read both the deposit and the liability on the car itself.

  • Levels run from Minimum coverage to Full Coverage Plus, chosen car by car: Basic coverage on 93, Full Coverage on 37 and Full Coverage Plus on 21 of the 120.
  • Minimum coverage appeared among the extras of only 20 cars, and on 2 of the 6 we priced the single level on offer added a charge at checkout.
  • No level reaches the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen or interior.
  • Damage or an accident? The terms want the company told immediately and a police report taken, unless the company says a report is not needed. Without the call and the report, Bali cover is void. No level covers vandalism, neglect or deliberate damage.
  • 17 cars sell theft protection as an add-on.

Lombok, Nusa Penida, Java: not by hire car

Clause 9 of the Indonesia rental terms, and what the booking search showed.

“Travelling outside the home island is prohibited.”

That is clause 9 in full. Lombok, Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands and Java are all off limits in the car; park it on Bali and carry on without it.

  • The Bali cars listed no ferry, island or cross-border extra, and the search offers no filter for one (checked 23 October 2026).
  • A Denpasar pickup with a Lombok return: no car available in Bali’s 23 October 2026 one-way search, rentals Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026.
  • Sanur Port and Padangbai Port appear as pickup places; they let you start or end a rental at the harbour, not cross the water.

Deposit, card and cash on Bali

What each of the 120 Bali cars asked for over Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026, from Denpasar’s search of 23 October 2026. Deposits were quoted in US dollars.

RequirementCarsWorth knowing
Credit card required0 of 120But not every car takes cash: 6 cars left cash off their deposit methods.
No deposit48117 held 250 USD or less; the top deposit, 500 USD, applied to 3. Every car offered in Uluwatu and Padangbai carried a deposit.
Deposit payable in cash66Of the 72 cars that hold a deposit, the other 6 listed no cash for it; one car we priced took its deposit in cash only. Each car shows its methods.
Balance in cash at handoverall 120114 also listed a card for the balance.

Of the rental, 15 to 20% goes online as the advance; the Bali company takes the balance when it hands over the keys. Delivery and handover charges are already in each price, but a cover level may be added at checkout (see the class section below).

Against our other destinations: 66 of 120 Bali cars (55%) took the deposit in cash, and just 3 of the 18 other places we compare beat that share; their middle value, Bali included, was 26% (Bali figures for the Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026 week, read 23 October 2026; the other places’ reads dated 22 and 23 October 2026). Bali’s numbers include Denpasar-pool cars offered for delivery around the island, where some of our other countries were read at an airport only, and Bali’s 120 cars are a small pool, so a handful of cars moves the share.

Return the car in another Bali town

Pick up in Denpasar or at the airport and drop off elsewhere on Bali. Pickup and return charges per car, in US dollars, on the Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026 dates, as quoted 23 October 2026.

  • Euro view: the cheapest five came to €106 to €125 for the week, before any cover added at checkout; the very cheapest, a Honda Brio, from €15.16 a day (checked 23 October 2026).
  • The “from” caveat: that Honda Brio’s only cover, Basic coverage, was pre-ticked at checkout, lifting the week from 119 USD to 154 USD (checked 23 October 2026).
  • Dollar view: from 17 USD a day; 60 of 120 cars at 41 USD or below. Day rates carry any delivery charge spread across the week.
  • Gearbox and fuel: 117 automatic, 3 manual; 108 petrol, 9 diesel, 3 electric or hybrid; model years 2014 to 2025.
  • Most listed models, top six: Toyota Avanza (15), Toyota Innova (14), Daihatsu Ayla (8), Honda Brio (8), Toyota Agya (8), Toyota Raize (8).

Seats, child seats and second drivers on Bali

  • Four or fewer: a 5-seater is enough; 50 of the 120 Bali cars had five seats (checked 23 October 2026). Compare the boot with your luggage.
  • Five to seven: 55 seven-seaters for the same November rental; filter by seat count. That is 46% of the Bali search, the biggest seven-plus share across the 19 places we compare (their middle value: 12%; Bali read 23 October 2026, the other places 22 and 23 October 2026; the caveat under deposits above applies).
  • Eight or more: in that search Bali’s biggest cars seated 7, so you would need two cars.
  • Kids: child seats as an extra on 66 cars, infant seats on 94, boosters on 28 (checked 23 October 2026); each car prices its own.
  • Second driver: offered as an extra on 70 of 120 in the same 23 October 2026 count; the car lists its price along with the minimum age and licence years.
  • Distance: no Bali car we checked had a daily distance limit for that rental.

Bali cancellation rules

  • A Bali booking cancelled seven or more days before pickup carries no penalty; for convertibles and luxury cars it is 30 days. The Bali search listed no convertibles (checked 23 October 2026).
  • Some Bali cars carry a late-cancel option that pushes that limit to 24 hours before pickup; 36 of 120 carried it on the Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026 dates.
  • To cancel, write to the booking partner by email, putting “Cancel” in the subject line and attaching your Bali voucher; the advance returns inside 14 days, minus the payment service fee of 6%.
  • Cancel later than that, or do not turn up at pickup, and the advance is gone. You cannot edit a Bali booking; to change dates or cars, cancel and book again.
  • 35 cars were the exact model and 85 “Or similar” and could arrive as a comparable model (checked 23 October 2026); the exact-model filter removes those. In the event of a breakdown, or force majeure of another kind, that leaves your booked car unavailable, the company has to provide a car from that class or above, with price and terms unchanged.
  • Staying longer? Agree it with the rental company before the rental ends. Every started day is charged as a full 24 hours, so a return a few hours after the pickup time costs another day.

Bali car hire FAQ

Is Lombok, Nusa Penida or Java allowed in a Bali hire car?

No. Clause 9 of the rental conditions reads: “Travelling outside the home island is prohibited.” The Bali cars carried no ferry or cross-border extra in our 23 October 2026 read, and in the Lombok one-way search (Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026) no car could start in Denpasar and end there. Park the car on Bali before you cross.

Is Bali traffic left-hand or right-hand?

Left-hand. Article 108(1) of Indonesia’s Road Traffic and Transport Act (UU 22/2009) puts road users on the left, with the right side kept for overtaking.

Does Bali car hire need an International Driving Permit?

The rental terms strongly recommend a permit when a licence is recognised only at home, and the company may ask for it. UK drivers face a firmer line: GOV.UK’s travel advice (public update 18 September 2026, read 23 October 2026) says a UK licence by itself will not do in Indonesia, but a UK-issued permit (the 1968 version, per GOV.UK) will.

Will a Bali rental company want a credit card?

Not on the Bali cars our 23 October 2026 search returned for Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026: zero of the 120 Bali cars flagged a credit card as required. The deposit methods still vary car by car, and 6 left cash off the list. Where a company does want a card, it must be a physical embossed credit card bearing the lead driver’s name. A debit card of the same kind is accepted by some companies, and the voucher says so.

Can I hire a car on Bali with no deposit?

Yes, 48 of the 120 in the Bali search, checked 23 October 2026 for rentals Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026. The remaining cars display their deposit, in US dollars, before booking.

Can I pick up a hire car at Bali airport?

Yes, it is the usual pickup point for 62 of the 120 cars we found on 23 October 2026 (rentals Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026) at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Another 45 were set up for delivery and 13 named a rental office. Pickup charges are included in each price, and the voucher tells you where the company will meet you.

Why is the price at checkout higher than in the search?

A search price carries any handover charge but may omit a cover level. Basic coverage was the sole level on 2 of 6 cars priced on 23 October 2026, and it came ticked at checkout. The cheapest car, a Honda Brio, showed 119 USD in the search for the Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026 rental and 154 USD at checkout. That is why our prices say “from”; the final total appears before payment.

What are the emergency numbers on Bali?

The UK government lists 118 for an ambulance, 112 for fire and 110 for the police. After a crash it advises staying put until the police arrive; the rental terms add a call to the rental company right away plus, unless the company agrees otherwise, a police report; missing either voids the cover.

Until when can I cancel a Bali booking without penalty?

As late as seven days before pickup as standard; convertibles and luxury cars need 30. Where the car came with the late-cancel option, you can still cancel up to 24 hours before; 36 of the 120 Bali cars offered it across Monday 16 to Monday 23 November 2026. Refunds never include the 6% payment service fee, whatever the timing.
