Crete car hire, one island fleet

Land at Heraklion or Chania, drive the north-coast road between them, and agree any ferry crossing with customer support before you book.

Car hire around Crete: two airports and five towns

How each place differs for a driver. Drive times are routed with no traffic and rounded up; car counts come from our 22 October 2026 searches for a seven-night hire running 16 to 23 November 2026.

The white buildings of Heraklion spread down to a blue sea, with green shrubs in front and a clear blue sky

Heraklion

The airport sits about 10 minutes (5.3 km) from Lions Square and 15 from Knossos, and Hersonissos and Malia are 30 to 35 minutes east along the north road.

106 of the 314 Heraklion-search cars started at the airport itself, with the others delivered or waiting at a company office. A bypass of the city is part of the new motorway being built.

The Venetian harbour of Chania with old waterfront houses, the lighthouse on the breakwater and turquoise water under a blue sky

Chania

From Chania airport it is about 25 minutes (15.6 km) into town or to Souda port; Kissamos is about 1 h, Omalos for the Samaria Gorge 1 h 15 min, and Elafonisi or Chora Sfakion about 1 h 45 min.

Look at totals here: 80 of the 152 cars handed over at Chania airport already had a delivery charge folded into what they cost. The motorway contract includes a junction linking the new road with the airport.

A stone lighthouse at the end of the harbour wall in Rethymno against a vivid blue sky

Rethymno

Halfway along the island, with each airport roughly 1 h 30 min off.

Cars come to you here: all 175 in the Rethymno search were delivered, and 159 of them carried a delivery charge in the total. The Rethymno to Geropotamos stretch of the north road is one of the three high-risk sections the ministry reported finished in August 2026, and Petres to Atsipopoulo was due by the end of that month, completion not confirmed.

Whitewashed buildings around a calm harbour at Agios Nikolaos, with mountains across the bay under a clear blue sky

Agios Nikolaos

Heraklion airport is roughly 1 h 15 min away and Chania airport about 4 h, so for the east, Heraklion is the airport to fly into.

All 145 cars in the Agios Nikolaos search came by delivery. A 14.5 km dual carriageway from Neapoli to Agios Nikolaos is under construction; the ministry has not confirmed when it opens.

Aerial view of the white town and harbour of Hersonissos beside a deep blue sea

Hersonissos

Heraklion airport is about 30 minutes (26.3 km) away along the north road; Chania airport, by contrast, is a 3 h 15 min drive.

160 cars could be delivered here; 151 of them had no deposit.

Aerial view of a sandy shore and turquoise shallows at Malia, with low mountains along the coast

Malia

A little further east than Hersonissos by road: Heraklion airport about 35 minutes (34.2 km), Chania airport roughly 3 h 30 min.

Of the 185 cars in the Malia search, 19 were listed at a company’s rental office rather than delivered; the voucher says where that office is.

A white boat moored in clear water at Elounda harbour, with bare hills and white clouds in a blue sky

Elounda

Heraklion airport to Elounda: about 1 h 15 min (66.8 km); Plaka, opposite Spinalonga, takes about as long.

All 86 cars in the Elounda search were delivered, and every one of them had no deposit.

Picking up at Heraklion or Chania airport

Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ) airports are 160.7 km apart, about 3 hours by road. Counts are for week-long hires from 16 November 2026, from our island search on 22 October 2026.

Cars at the airport

106 of the 314 cars in the Heraklion search were handed over at Heraklion Airport itself, and 152 of the 257 Chania-search cars at Chania Airport. The rest were delivered to an address or picked up at a company office.

Why a town search can mislead

Crete’s companies share one pool of cars: 241 cars turned up in both the Heraklion and Chania searches, and 76 could start at either airport. A town result lists cars that will be brought there, not cars parked there.

Chania prices often include a delivery charge

On 80 of the 152 Chania Airport pickups, a delivery charge was already included in the price. Compare Chania cars on the total, not the day rate.

Coming off a ferry

The booking partner lists a Heraklion Port and a Souda Port place, yet not one of the Heraklion or Chania cars sat on either for that November week. A separate Souda search found 14 cars, all handed over at Souda Port.

Landing at three in the morning

Enter the time you actually land. On 22 October 2026 we asked for prices on 40 Heraklion Airport cars with both ends of the hire at 03:00 on that November rental: 36 added a charge for the night pickup, the night return or both, and 3 of the remaining 4 simply cost more at night. Both show before you pay.

The two airports

Chania airport (officially “Ioannis Daskalogiannis”) is run by Fraport Greece, which gives the terminal’s hours as midnight to 23:59 each day; buses for Chania and Rethymno stop opposite Departures, with drivers selling tickets. The website of Heraklion airport (officially “Nikos Kazantzakis”) was down for maintenance on 22 October 2026, so we give nothing on its terminal. A replacement Heraklion airport is under construction at Kastelli, and the ministry says it will connect directly to the new north-coast motorway (May 2026).

Credit cards and deposits on Crete

Heraklion and Chania listings for a week’s hire beginning 16 November 2026; our island search ran 22 October 2026.

On Crete a zero deposit does not mean no card: 221 of 314 Heraklion cars held no deposit, yet 106 still wanted a credit card, 51 of them among the zero-deposit cars.

Against the 18 other destinations SabreCar searched for that same week (read 22 October 2026), Crete leans one way on deposits and the other on cards: only 4 had a bigger share of no-deposit cars, but 17 had a bigger share of cars needing no credit card, and 16 had a bigger share of cars that would take a deposit in cash. One November search per place, some airport-only and some citywide, so read these as rough positions.

The part you pay online, 15 to 20%, is a share of the Crete rental price, and the company collects the balance when you take the keys. Crete’s terms ask you to double-check the payment, deposit and refund methods both in the booking and on your voucher.

Where a credit card is demanded, bring the physical card itself, bearing raised numbers and the name of the main driver. Some Crete companies will accept a debit card instead, which both the listing and the voucher will mention.

What the two searches showed

  • Credit card neededHeraklion 106 of 314; Chania 85 of 257
  • No credit card neededHeraklion 208; Chania 172
  • At Heraklion Airport55 of the 106 airport pickups wanted a card; on town delivery, 51 of 163
  • No depositHeraklion 221; Chania 171. A zero deposit can still come with a card requirement.
  • Deposit in cashJust 20 in Heraklion and 19 in Chania. “No credit card” on a listing is no promise that cash is taken.

Booking a Crete car, start to finish

  1. Choose both ends of the island

Heraklion, Chania or a delivery town such as Rethymno. The two airports are about 3 hours apart; when your flight home leaves from the far one, make that the return place.

  2. Read the card line, not only the deposit

On Crete a car with no deposit can still want a credit card. The listing shows both, plus how any deposit is held.

  3. Settle the ferry question first

A crossing has to be agreed with customer support before checkout. Then pay the advance; after that, the voucher arriving by email carries the firm’s name, a number to ring and the meeting spot, and the balance is paid on the day.

Types of car on Crete, by number listed

How many cars of each class the Heraklion search held for a hire starting 16 November 2026 (class counts taken on 22 October 2026). We print no prices here: on Crete the lowest day rates can come with high deposits.

Because a Crete listing can belong to two classes, the tiles add up to more than 314. Economy is the biggest class here, 179 of 314 cars, a bigger slice than at any of the 17 other places we compared (comparison read 22 October 2026). Automatics run the other way: 114 of 314, and 17 of 18 other places had a larger automatic share (read 22 October 2026), so anyone who needs an automatic should filter for it first. One November search per place, some airport-only and some citywide, so read these as rough positions. Listed most often: Opel Corsa (15), Fiat Panda (15), Kia Picanto (12), Fiat Tipo (12), Volkswagen Polo (10), Toyota Yaris (10).

Crete prices in November, January and June

Median day rate for a 7-day hire starting in each of three sample weeks, from searches run 22 October 2026. Half of the cars came in below the median and half above.

18 January 2027228€40194€50
14 June 202747€5745€75
  • June is a small sample: 47 Heraklion cars were open to booking, against 314 for November, since companies had yet to release next summer. Take its prices as an early look, not the summer rate.
  • In Chania 179 of 257 November cars had a delivery charge included in the total, compared with 38 of 314 in Heraklion, so compare totals rather than day rates.

Driving in Crete: the north-coast road and its roadworks

From Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport releases and Region of Crete notices, read 23 October 2026. Ministry dates and targets are its own statements, printed with the month they were made.

  • One road along the north: the existing north-coast road, the B.O.A.K. in Greek, is how you get from Kissamos past Chania and Rethymno to Heraklion. The ministry is fitting road-safety works along 131 km of it, on seven sections it calls high-risk.
  • What changes under the works: where the road is at least 11 m wide, which is most of its length but not all, it becomes three lanes, with a middle overtaking lane of 1 to 2.5 km that switches direction. Plastic bollards split the two directions, and emergency lay-bys go in on single-lane stretches where there is room.
  • Done so far: on 6 August 2026 the ministry listed three sections as finished: Chania to Kolymbari, Rethymno to Geropotamos, and the Heraklion landfill to Linoperamata.
  • Closures at night: works can close a stretch or put traffic in one lane under lights. One past example: a Chania Police decision, announced by the Region on 10 July 2026, set works on a 1 km stretch between Kissamos and Kolymbari for 12 to 18 July, 22:00 to 06:00, with the two directions taking turns at a traffic light.
  • The motorway being built: a closed motorway of 225 km from Kissamos to Agios Nikolaos, which the ministry calls the first road with motorway characteristics on an island. It is under construction in three contracts, with bypasses at Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion; in October 2026 the ministry said the first sections would open very soon, without a date.
  • Tolls: the ministry says the Chania to Heraklion section of the new road will be tolled once it is built, and has announced no prices. Under clause 12 the renter pays tolls, fuel, parking and fines.
  • Beyond Agios Nikolaos: the motorway reaches Sitia only as studies the ministry is funding (May 2026), and on 23 October 2026 the Region announced it intends to tender road-safety work on the old road from Kalo Chorio to Sitia. Heraklion airport to Sitia: about 2 h 15 min; Chania airport to Sitia: about 5 h.
  • Crossing to the south coast: the south is reached on inland roads. Routed with no traffic, Heraklion airport to Matala takes about 1 h 15 min, Chania airport to Plakias or Chora Sfakion about 1 h 45 min, and Chania airport to Preveli Monastery about 2 h.

Storm days, fords and fire alerts on Crete

From the Region of Crete’s civil-protection and fire-risk notices (read 23 October 2026) and UK government travel advice.

  • Fords with no bridge: the Region warns about “Irish crossings”, points where a road runs through a torrent bed without a bridge, and tells people not to cross a torrent on foot or by car.
  • If a storm breaks while you drive: the Region’s advice is to stop at a safe point away from trees and pylons, switch on the hazard lights and stay in the car, and to move parked cars away from stream banks.
  • October 2026: the minister called that month’s storm on Crete unprecedented, and the Heraklion regional unit asked residents to avoid unnecessary journeys. On 1 October the Heraklion deputy regional governor said heavy rain had hit specific areas of the unit while the southern municipalities of Phaistos and Gortyna were not hit. Afterwards the Lasithi Plateau and Ferma were among the worst-hit points in Lasithi, where crews were clearing roads and stream beds of mud, rocks and vehicles swept away by the water (status 14 October 2026).
  • Fire-alert days: The UK government’s travel advice gives April to October as the season of high wildfire risk, and says to ring 112 on seeing a fire. On red-alert days the fire service closes named forests, gorges and trails to people and vehicles; on 29 August 2026 that list included the Vai palm forest overnight (22:00 to 06:00). The Region posts fire-risk notices day by day, and it issued very-high-risk or alert notices for all or part of the island on many days between 16 July and 30 August 2026.

Paved roads only: Balos and Elafonisi

Where a hire car may be driven under the Crete terms, which match the Greece terms.

  • Hire cars must stay on paved public roads. The terms name no single route, so check each day trip against that rule.
  • Balos: the Municipality of Kissamos describes the way in as a few kilometres of poor dirt road ending at a roughly laid-out car park, then a path of about 35 to 40 minutes down to the sand, and map data shows the final 7.6 km unpaved. That puts it off limits for a hire car in our reading, and we publish no drive time for it. The same page says visitors come mainly on the boats from Kissamos port, about an hour to Gramvousa, and Kissamos is about 1 h by road from Chania airport.
  • Elafonisi: Chania Airport to the beach takes roughly 1 h 45 min. Map data shows the road from Topolia down to the Chrysoskalitissa monastery road as asphalt; we have not checked the last few hundred metres, the beach access or the car park.
  • Samaria Gorge: you drive to Xyloskalo at Omalos, where the gorge begins, and Chania Airport to Xyloskalo is around 1 h 15 min; the gorge itself is walked.

Taking the car on a ferry: only if agreed first

Based on the Crete rental terms and the booking partner’s search of 22 October 2026.

No border crossings

The terms forbid driving a hire car into another country, whatever you add at checkout.

Nothing to tick when booking

The extras for Greek rentals include neither a cross-border nor a ferry option.

Returns at Athens airport

On a hire beginning 16 November 2026, 15 cars from Heraklion Airport and 15 from Chania Airport could be booked to end at Athens airport, and the drop-off charge on each was €290, inside the total. The trip still means a ferry, so agree the crossing first, and we cannot say whether that charge includes the boat.

Thessaloniki

A Heraklion to Thessaloniki search found no cars.

What we did not check

Ferry operators, routes, crossing times and fares are outside what we measured.

Ferry first, then book

Clause 10 of the Crete rental terms says any crossing to the mainland or another island must be agreed in advance with customer support at the booking partner, before the booking is completed.

Greek road rules on Crete, and after an accident

Sources: the Crete rental terms; Your Europe, the EU site carrying information from the Greek authorities; the Greek National Tourism Organisation; UK travel advice.

Speed, alcohol and phones

  • Speed limits: 30 km/h inside towns, though some multi-lane town roads allow 50; 90 km/h out of town; motorways 130 km/h. Signs take priority.
  • Blood alcohol: 0.5 mg/ml in general, 0.2 for novices, professional drivers and riders of motorcycles and mopeds. The EU page gives no definition of a novice.
  • Hand-held phones are banned; use a hands-free set or holder.
  • Seat belts must be worn and children carried in a restraint; Your Europe lists both as mandatory.

In the car

  • Greek rules require three things in every car: an extinguisher, a first-aid kit and a warning triangle; check all three are aboard before you leave the car park.
  • Child seats: 38 of the 40 Heraklion Airport cars we priced (22 October 2026) offered one, booked together with the car.

After an accident

  • The terms set the order (clause 6): phone the rental company first, then the police for a report, unless the company agrees to do without one. Without both, the insurance stops covering the car, so the whole repair bill is yours.
  • For help, 112 reaches ambulance, fire and police, and 166 an ambulance; per the UK government, 999 dialled from a UK mobile is put through to the Greek emergency services.

Parking in Chania and Heraklion

As the airport and the two municipalities published it; Chania prices read 22 October 2026, Heraklion read 23 October 2026. You pay all parking.

  • Chania Airport: open round the clock, first 20 minutes free, cash or credit card; 5 to 24 hours €12.00, 6 to 7 days €43.00 (airport price list, 22 October 2026).
  • Chania town: street parking is paid through the i-PARK CHANIA app or at shops that sell parking time, 07:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, for 4 hours at most, which costs €4.80; Sundays and public holidays cost nothing (Municipality of Chania, same date). The app needs the plate in Latin characters, and we have not tested whether a hire car’s plate registers.
  • Park and Ride in Chania: free car parks at Kladisos and at the former army camp beside Markopoulou park, linked to the centre by free electric buses; the Municipality publishes the timetable.
  • Heraklion: the municipality lists municipal car parks and controlled-parking spaces, plus residents’ spaces, disabled spaces and loading bays in the Old Town. The locations are on a map on its site, and the page text gives no prices or way to pay, so we print none.
  • Heraklion airport: its website was down for maintenance on 22 October 2026, so no parking prices.

Documents to bring

  • Licence: your original national licence, valid for the whole hire. Copies and digital licences are not accepted.
  • Driving permit (IDP): the Greece terms that apply on Crete recommend one for every driver, saying it makes things easier with the local police, and a company may refuse to rent without one. Per the UK government, a UK photocard licence is valid for driving in Greece.
  • Card: only when the listing asks, a physical credit card with raised digits in the lead driver’s name (some firms accept debit cards).
  • Age and experience: each listing sets its own minimum age and years of driving, identical models can differ, and a driver who falls short can be turned away.
  • Phone: give the number in full international form; it must be reachable (calls, or Viber, WhatsApp and Telegram messages) for the whole rental and the day ahead of it. If the company cannot reach you, the terms bar later service complaints.

Cover levels on Crete cars

Four levels, not always all four

Full Coverage Plus sits above Minimum, Basic and Full Coverage, and appeared on 139 of 314 Heraklion cars and 92 of 257 in Chania (island counts of 22 October 2026, hire from 16 November 2026).

Deposit by level

On some Crete cars a higher level lowers the deposit; on others it stays the same. The deposit appears on every car before you pay.

What standard cover leaves out

Damage to the windscreen, wheels, interior or undercarriage is outside standard cover. On Crete that is one more reason the dirt road to Balos is no place for a hire car, on top of the paved-roads clause. Deliberate damage, vandalism and neglect are never insured.

Extras on the Heraklion quotes

Of the 40 Heraklion Airport cars we priced for that November week (22 October 2026), 13 listed Theft Protection and 1 Personal Accident Insurance.

Seats for couples, families and big groups

  • Up to 4 people: the island list is heavy on small cars (see the types above), so compare the model’s luggage space with your cases.
  • 5 to 9: 23 Heraklion cars offered 7 to 9 seats, 12 of them nine, in our Heraklion search (run 22 October 2026, for a hire from 16 November 2026). That is a thin slice: 16 of 18 other SabreCar destinations, searched for the same week, had a larger share of 7-plus seaters (read 22 October 2026). The seats filter shows them.
  • 10 and up: book two, since nobody listed more than 9 seats.
  • Children: of the 40 Heraklion Airport cars we priced (22 October 2026), 38 offered a child seat and 39 a booster.
  • Extra driver: 14 of the same 40 listed a second-driver extra; age and licence rules appear on each car.

Cancelling, changing or keeping it longer

  • No penalty until7 days ahead of pickup (30 days on luxury cars and convertibles), or 24 hours ahead if the booking carries the cancellation extra
  • RefundAdvance paid back within 14 days, after taking off the 6% payment service fee
  • Cancelled late, or no-showThe advance is kept

Convertibles need longerCrete lists open-top cars more than the typical place we compared: 17 of 314 in the Heraklion search, with only 3 of 17 other places showing a larger share (read 22 October 2026). Those fall under the 30-day rule.

The 24-hour extra23 of the 40 Heraklion Airport cars we priced for that November week offered it (22 October 2026). Email the booking partner with the subject “Cancel” and the voucher attached; bookings cannot be edited, so cancel and rebook to change.

“Or similar” cars171 of 314 Heraklion listings were marked “or similar” in our Heraklion search of 22 October 2026, for a hire from 16 November 2026, so the company may hand over a comparable model instead; a filter shows guaranteed models only. Where breakdown or force majeure makes the booked car unavailable, the company must substitute a car no lower in class, at the price and terms agreed.

Keeping the car longerEach day of hire is a 24-hour block, and a few extra hours count as a further day; tell the company ahead of time to extend.

Crete car hire questions

Does a Crete hire car need a credit card?

It depends on the listing. Our Crete search of 22 October 2026, for seven days of hire from 16 November 2026, found 208 of 314 Heraklion cars and 172 of 257 Chania cars asking for none, against 106 and 85 that did. Each car states it, a filter can hide the card-only ones, and where a card is demanded it has to be the physical one with raised digits in the lead driver’s name.

Can I find a Crete hire car with no deposit?

Yes. In our Crete search of 22 October 2026 (hire from 16 November 2026), 221 of 314 Heraklion cars and 171 of 257 Chania cars had no deposit at all. Among deposit-holding cars, cash payment was possible on only 20 Heraklion and 19 Chania listings, so look at how it is taken.

Is an International Driving Permit needed on Crete?

The Crete terms advise one for every driver, alongside the national licence, and note that some companies may refuse to rent without it.
