Dubai car hire, one way to Abu Dhabi

Pick up in Dubai and return in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah if you like. Bring an International Driving Permit and stay off desert tracks.

Car hire around the UAE: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah

Clear-road drive times routed 23 October 2026; car counts (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026); toll and parking rules as the operators published them on 23 October 2026.

Aerial view of Downtown Dubai with the Burj Khalifa rising above the towers, under a clear blue sky

Dubai

The fleet lives here: 414 cars in the Dubai search, 50 of them based at Dubai International. DXB sits in the city, about 20 min from the Burj Khalifa with clear roads; Al Maktoum (DWC) is out on the E311 and E611, about 55 min from DXB, and calls its parking complimentary.

Salik gates charge by time of day, and street parking is paid by zone and time through SMS, WhatsApp or the RTA and Parkin apps.

Aerial view of the Abu Dhabi Corniche with its beach, turquoise water and city towers, under a blue sky with streaks of cloud

Abu Dhabi

All 361 cars in our Abu Dhabi search were Dubai cars too; 90 listed Zayed International (AUH) as home and the rest came by delivery. From DXB the E11 reaches the Corniche in about 1 h 45 min.

Darb gates stand on the four bridges into the city and charge at the morning and evening peaks. Public bays are colour-coded under Mawaqif: Premium white and turquoise, Standard black and turquoise, paid 8 am to midnight, with Sundays and public holidays free.

High-rise towers of Sharjah along the Al Majaz waterfront, with a small sandy shore and trees, under a clear sky

Sharjah

Every one of the 362 cars in the Sharjah search was also in Dubai’s; 14 were based at Sharjah Airport (SHJ). The Al Majaz waterfront is about 15 min from DXB.

Sharjah is the emirate where the Foreign Office says drinking or even possessing alcohol is illegal, so leave none in the car. We have not read Sharjah’s parking rules.

DXB or Al Maktoum: collecting a Dubai hire car

Two airports, 64.5 km apart by road and about 55 min from DXB to DWC with the roads clear (routed 23 October 2026).

Either airport works

We priced 6 Dubai cars for pickup and return at each airport (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026), and all 6 could be handed over at both. 50 of the 414 Dubai cars were based at DXB and none at Al Maktoum, so look at the pickup place and any fee on your car.

What each airport adds

Of those six (same read and week), 3 added nothing at DXB and the others up to €22.29 per end; Al Maktoum added a fee on all 6, €31.21 to €53.50 per end. The price you see already includes it.

Red-eye landings

Give the search your true landing time. Of 12 DXB cars re-quoted with a 03:00 handover and 03:00 return (23 October 2026, week from 16 November 2026), 4 charged extra at each end for the hour; the others added nothing, and all could still be booked.

Desks and meeting points

The voucher states where the Dubai company meets you and its number, and the company has to be able to reach you from the day before pickup. Rental desks listed on the airport’s website are its own partners; follow your voucher instead.

Five steps to a Dubai rental

  1. Choose where to collect

DXB, Al Maktoum, your address, or a named place in the city where the car offers it. The booking partner listed 18 in Dubai on 23 October 2026, Dubai Mall of the Emirates among them.

  2. Choose where to return it

Leave it as Dubai, or set Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah for a one-way.

  3. Weigh deposit and kilometres

Read each car’s kilometre allowance next to its deposit and cover levels; the roads section below shows how few Dubai cars come uncapped.

  4. Pay the advance

The UAE booking takes 15 to 20% online to hold the car, and the voucher email gives the company’s name, number and meeting point.

  5. Show licence and IDP

At the handover, present your national licence and International Driving Permit, then pay what is left by one of the car’s accepted methods.

Deposits and cards on Dubai cars

What the 414 Dubai listings required (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).

Card rules

Not one of the 414 Dubai cars carried a credit-card requirement. Deposit methods still vary: among the six we priced, some took cards from one network only.

340 with no deposit

Out of 414, a share beaten by just one of the other 18 destinations (19 destinations, our 22 and 23 October 2026 searches of the 16 November week). The rest show the sum on the car before booking.

Deposit back after 30 days

A held deposit returns 30 days after the car does, under the UAE terms, minus fines and tolls from your hire. All 74 cars holding one listed cash as a payment option.

The balance on the day

The six Dubai cars we quoted (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026) took the balance by card on all 6 and in cash on 4; check the methods on your own pick.

Any airport, drop-off or out-of-hours charge is built into the total shown for each car.

Licence and permit rules for UAE rentals

Licence plus IDP

The UAE terms want both an International Driving Permit and your national licence, valid until the hire is over, even though UAE rules let some visitors drive on their home licence. Copies and electronic licences are refused.

UK photocard holders

According to the UK government’s UAE travel page, checked 23 October 2026, a UK photocard licence is fine for driving in the UAE; an old paper licence may need updating or the right permit. The rental terms ask for the permit regardless, and for a UK licence gov.uk lists the 1968 type for the UAE.

Age and licence years

Fixed car by car, with similar models free to differ. The 6 Dubai quotes we took (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026) set minimum ages from 19 to 25 and wanted a licence held at least 1 year.

A card, if asked

No Dubai car demanded a credit card (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026), yet the UAE terms keep the right to ask for one: physical, embossed and in the main driver’s name, with debit cards held to the same three tests.

Dubai’s fleet by class

Gearboxes: 413 automatic and 1 manual among the 414. Five most-listed models: Nissan Patrol (13), Kia Sportage (10), Cadillac Escalade (8), GMC Yukon (8), Kia Sorento (8).

  • Set against our other destinations (19 destinations, our 22 and 23 October 2026 searches of the 16 November week), Dubai had the biggest share of automatics and of convertibles, and the smallest share of compact-class cars (18 destinations had class data). Those searches are not like for like: some destinations were searched at an airport only, while Dubai was a city search with handover at DXB and Al Maktoum.

Salik, Darb and airport parking

Rates as each UAE authority or airport publishes them, read 23 October 2026. The renter pays these.

  • Salik, Dubai: AED 6 per gate at peak times (6:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday), AED 4 off-peak and all day Sunday, and free from 1:00 to 6:00. Public holidays take weekday rates and Ramadan shifts the hours. 5% VAT is added since 1 June 2026 (RTA rates on the government portal).
  • Darb, Abu Dhabi: AED 4 a crossing from 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, Sundays and official holidays excepted (Abu Dhabi Mobility). Gates stand on the four bridges into the city: Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, Al Maqtaa and Mussafah.
  • On a hire car, the UAE terms make tolls the renter’s cost, and any tolls from your hire that the Dubai company is billed for are taken from your deposit with administrative costs of a size the terms leave unstated. No deposit on your car? Ask the company how it collects tolls.
  • DXB parking: a first day runs from AED 70 (Terminal 2 economy) to AED 125 (the Terminal 1 and 2 premium car parks and Terminal 3), then AED 50 to AED 100 for each day after, per Dubai Airports on 23 October 2026. DXB can also take unpaid parking from a Salik account at the exit, so on a hire car the fee may reach you through the deposit.
  • Al Maktoum called its parking complimentary and open to all when we read its website on 23 October 2026.
  • On-street parking in Dubai is paid by zone and time, through SMS, WhatsApp, the RTA Dubai app or the Parkin app.

Driving in the UAE: fast lanes, flashing lights and Ramadan evenings

Dubai’s RTA driver handbook, the UK Foreign Office’s UAE page and the government portal u.ae, all read 23 October 2026. Handbook points are the RTA’s advice for Dubai, not quotes of current federal law.

On the E11 and the other big roads

  • Traffic keeps to the right in Dubai, per the RTA.
  • On highways the left lanes are for overtaking only, and the RTA asks for a gap of at least 3 seconds. On freeways it puts you in the right-hand lane when traffic is light, the centre lane when it builds, and never past anyone on the hard shoulder.
  • No speed figure here on purpose: limits are posted road by road, and Dubai’s RTA announced new limits on five streets from 1 November 2026. Some roads also have a minimum speed. Go by the signs.
  • Headlights flashed from behind can mean a driver is coming through, not letting you out, the Foreign Office notes.
  • Rude gestures or bad language aimed at another driver can bring fines, a jail sentence and possibly deportation (Foreign Office), so let it go.
  • The RTA keeps the horn for warnings, and not at all near hospitals, schools or places of worship, or in local neighbourhoods from midnight to 6 am.
  • In Ramadan, the Foreign Office says eating, drinking or smoking in public by day, your car included, may cause offence, and that driving may be erratic, above all at dusk when people are trying to get home.

Inside the car

  • Alcohol: the Foreign Office calls drinking and driving illegal “no matter how small the amount”, adding that your insurance is likely to be invalidated after an accident.
  • Sharjah, which the Foreign Office places 30 km north of Dubai, bans drinking or even possessing alcohol, so a bottle in the boot becomes an offence once you cross into it.
  • Medicines in the glovebox or luggage: some UK prescription and over-the-counter medicines are controlled in the UAE and need Ministry of Health approval first. Vape refills can hold banned ingredients such as CBD oil (Foreign Office).
  • Handling a phone at the wheel, or any other distraction, is an offence on the government’s list. Belts for everyone in the car.
  • Children under 10, or under 145 cm, ride in the back; under-4s need a child seat, which you can add at booking where the car offers one.
  • Pulling over to film near an airport or government building can be misunderstood: the Foreign Office says photographing some government and military sites is illegal, and plane spotting may be mistaken. Ask before photographing people.

Fog, sand, summer rain and what to do after a crash

Weather points from Dubai’s RTA handbook and the Foreign Office; crash steps from UAE rental clause 7, the Foreign Office and u.ae; all read 23 October 2026.

Crash or damage: ring the Dubai company first

Clause 7 of the UAE terms comes first: tell the rental company straight away and get a police report; skip either and the insurance is cancelled. On the road, the Foreign Office says every driver involved must stop and call the police (999; ambulance 998, fire 997), and that leaving the scene before they arrive is illegal; in Abu Dhabi you move the car aside only if nobody is hurt and the damage is minor, otherwise it stays put. Minor collisions can also be reported through the apps u.ae lists: MoI UAE, Saeed, Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Police and Sharjah’s Rafid.

  • Fog usually rolls in early in the morning when summer starts or ends, and the RTA says it can cut what you see to a few metres.
  • Sand blown across the road means “tire grip is reduced”, the RTA notes, and the road edge gets hard to find; dust thrown up by oncoming cars can hide what is ahead.
  • Lights go on from sunset to sunrise, and in fog, rain, smoke or sandstorms (RTA).
  • Rain makes roads very slippery in its first few minutes (RTA). Heavy rain can cause flooding; the Foreign Office points drivers to the National Centre of Meteorology forecasts.
  • Low sun at sunrise and sunset can make it hard to see the road ahead (RTA).
  • Breakdowns: hazard lights on and, the RTA advises, a warning triangle 50 m back towards oncoming traffic; we have not checked that hire cars carry one. Do not wait inside the car on the hard shoulder, however hot it is outside.

Paved roads only in the UAE, and kilometre limits

The UAE rental terms, the government’s list of roads (read 23 October 2026) and our routing (23 October 2026).

No dunes, no desert tracks

The terms limit UAE rentals to paved public roads and prohibit unpaved areas, so a desert drive in the rental car is a breach. For the dunes, the Foreign Office’s advice is a properly equipped four-wheel drive, other cars alongside, water and a phone, and a reputable tour company: leave the hire car at the hotel that day.

  • Long trips use the main highways. The government names the E11 (Al Ittihad Road) the country’s longest road, at about 553 km; DXB to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi covers about 125 km of it.
  • 392 of the 414 Dubai cars carried a daily kilometre limit (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026). On four of the six Dubai quotes (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026) the allowance was for the whole hire (1,750 km for the week), with each kilometre beyond it charged; the remaining two quoted no limit. Going from DXB to the Grand Mosque and back uses about 283 km of it.
  • Only 22 of the 414 Dubai cars came with no distance cap at all, the smallest share among the destinations whose mileage data we trust (13 destinations, our 22 and 23 October 2026 searches of the 16 November week). Those searches are not like for like: some destinations were searched at an airport only, while Dubai was a city search with handover at DXB and Al Maktoum.
  • Hatta has no drive time here yet: we have not confirmed that its fastest route stays inside the UAE, and the car cannot leave the country.

UAE cover levels, car by car

Up to four levels per car

From Minimum coverage up to Full Coverage Plus, though not every Dubai car offers each one. Basic coverage was on 370 of the 414 Dubai cars, Full Coverage on 225 and Full Coverage Plus on 59 (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).

  • With Full Coverage Plus, one Dubai car (quoted 23 October 2026, week from 16 November 2026) had its deposit, and the ceiling on damage charges, cut to zero. Read what each level does on your car.
  • Wheels, underside, windscreen and interior: none are in standard insurance.
  • Cover only holds if clause 7’s steps are followed after a crash (company told at once, police report in hand); see the crash notes above. Miss one and you carry the full cost.
  • Deliberate damage, vandalism and neglect: no level covers them. Theft protection and personal accident cover are sold as extras where listed.

A Dubai hire car cannot go to Oman

What the UAE rental terms say about the border.

Border rule

The UAE terms bar a rental car from crossing the country’s borders, which rules out Oman, a day trip included.

  • The extras for UAE cars on 23 October 2026 held no cross-border package, so nothing can be added at booking to change it.
  • A Dubai to Muscat one-way returned no cars (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).

Picking the right size of car in Dubai

Dubai search (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).

  • Two to four travellers: a five-seater, once its boot fits your bags; 22 Dubai cars had only two seats.
  • Five to eight: 78 Dubai cars seated seven or eight. Counting every car with seven seats or more, just one other destination had a bigger share than Dubai (19 destinations, our 22 and 23 October 2026 searches of the 16 November week).
  • Over eight: plan on two cars; only 1 Dubai car had more than eight seats.
  • Children: book a child seat. UAE rules put under-4s in one and keep under-10s out of the front.
  • A second driver: an extra where listed, priced on the car.

Cancelling or changing a Dubai booking

  • Cancelling carries no penalty when a full 7 days remain before pickup; for luxury cars and convertibles the cut-off is 30 days. That longer window matters in Dubai: 186 of the 414 cars were premium class and 41 convertibles (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).
  • A flexible-cancellation option on some cars shrinks that window to 24 hours; 318 of the 414 Dubai cars had it (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).
  • Send the booking partner an email titled “Cancel” with the voucher attached, and you are repaid inside 14 days, except for the 6% payment service fee.
  • Cancel after those deadlines, or do not turn up for the car, and you lose the whole advance. To change dates or the car you cancel and book again.
  • “Or similar” means the Dubai company may substitute a comparable model: 195 of the 414 Dubai cars were so marked (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026). When force majeure (a breakdown, for example) stops the Dubai company supplying the booked car, it must provide the same class or better at the same price and terms.
  • Want the car longer? Agree that with the Dubai company before your hire ends. A few hours over the 24-hour mark cost another full day.

Dubai car hire, answered

Do Dubai rental cars need a credit card?

Going by the cars we read, no: none of the 414 Dubai cars was marked as needing one (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026). The UAE terms still let a company insist on a credit card, physical and embossed, carrying the main driver’s name; check the listing and voucher. Each car also names its accepted deposit methods; on some, only one card network is taken.

Are there Dubai rentals without a deposit?

340 of the 414 Dubai cars listed none (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026). For the rest, the deposit is printed on the car before booking.

How long until a UAE deposit comes back?

Under the UAE rental terms, 30 days from the day the car is returned. Any fines or tolls from your hire that the company is billed for come off it first, with an administrative cost for paying them.

Is an IDP required to rent in Dubai?

Yes, for a car booked here. The terms require an International Driving Permit together with your national licence, both valid until the hire ends, and refuse copies and electronic licences, even where UAE rules let some visitors drive on a home licence.

Could I drive a Dubai hire car into Oman?

No. The UAE terms keep rental cars inside the country, and the extras on 23 October 2026 held no cross-border option. A Dubai to Muscat one-way also returned no cars (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026).

Can I pick up the car at DXB or Al Maktoum?

Yes. Each of the 6 Dubai cars we quoted (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026) was available at Dubai International (DXB) and at Al Maktoum (DWC). Al Maktoum added a fee on all 6, while 3 of 6 added nothing at DXB. The fee is inside the price, and the voucher says where to meet.

Can a Dubai car be dropped in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?

Yes, one way. 361 Dubai cars could be returned in Abu Dhabi and 362 in Sharjah (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026); every one had a drop-off fee already in its total.

Who pays Salik and Darb on a rental?

You do; the UAE terms name Salik and Darb among the renter’s costs. Any tolls from your hire that the rental company is billed for are taken from your deposit with an administrative cost, and the deposit returns 30 days after the car. The extras we read on 23 October 2026 included no toll package.

How old do you have to be to rent in Dubai?

Each Dubai car sets its own floor, and near-identical models can disagree. Minimum ages on the 6 Dubai quotes (Dubai listings of 23 October 2026; week starting 16 November 2026) ran from 19 to 25, each wanting a licence held at least 1 year. The car displays its own figures before booking.
