What you need to rent a car in Albania

  • Your driving licence: the original national licence, valid until the last day of the rental, with its details in Latin script. Copies, photos and electronic licences are not accepted.
  • An International Driving Permit, if needed: if your licence is only valid in the country that issued it, the rental terms strongly recommend one as well. It goes with your licence and never replaces it. For UK licence holders, the UK government says a 1968 permit may be useful.
  • The card the car asks for: only if the car needs a credit card, a physical embossed card in the main driver’s name. Otherwise cash or the methods the car shows.
  • Your voucher: it has the rental company’s phone number and where to meet.
  • Age and experience: set per car. On the Tirana cars we checked the minimum age ran from 18 to 21, with 1 to 3 years of driving. A second driver must meet the same rules; on some cars it is free.

Car hire insurance in Albania

What the cover levels are, and what standard cover leaves out.

  • Each car offers up to four cover levels: Minimum coverage, Basic coverage, Full Coverage and Full Coverage Plus. You choose one when you book.
  • Standard insurance does not cover damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior.
  • Theft protection is a separate extra on the cars that have it.
  • After any damage, even a scrape in a car park, tell the rental company straight away and get a police report unless the company agrees otherwise. Without them the insurance is cancelled and you pay the full repair.
  • No insurance applies to deliberate damage, or on the routes and areas the terms exclude (below).

Driving in Albania: rules of the road

Short and practical. The article numbers are from the Albanian road code.

On the road

  • Drive on the right.
  • Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads between towns, 80 km/h on secondary roads, 40 km/h in towns, unless signs say otherwise (art. 140.1).
  • No alcohol at all: penalties start from the lowest reading (art. 184).
  • Dipped headlights on at all times outside towns (art. 150.1).
  • Carry a warning triangle and a first-aid kit (art. 72.3); check they are in the car at pickup.
  • Less than two years with your licence? Zero alcohol and lower speed limits apply (art. 117/1.5).
  • Emergency numbers: police 112, ambulance 127, fire 128.

Paying as you go

  • Fuel, parking, fines and tolls are paid by you.
  • Toll: the Milot to Morinë motorway towards Kosovo; the plaza takes lek, euro notes and bank cards.
  • Tirana street parking: paid Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 20:00, zones A, B and C at 100, 40 and 20 lek an hour, by SMS to 50500. Free at weekends and overnight.
  • Tirana Airport parking: from 300 lek for up to 3 hours in P1, 200 lek in P2 and P3.
  • Return the car with the fuel you collected it with; a lower level is charged at the company’s rates.
  • The currency is the lek (ALL); prices in the search are in euros.

Roads a rental car may not use in Albania

From the Albania rental terms. No insurance is valid on these routes.

  • Paved public roads only: not the unpaved tracks down to beaches.
  • Not these routes: Berat to Përmet through the Osumi Canyon and on the SH74; Tirana to Qafë-Shtamë through Lake Bovilla; Theth to Valbona through the mountains; Memaliaj to Berat through Martallozi; Krujë to Burrel through Qafë-Shtamë.
  • Not these areas: Tomorri Mountain, Lura National Park, Lake Koman, Korab Mountain and Qafë-Shtamë Nature Park.
  • An SUV or 4x4 does not change this. It helps on long drives and potholed paved roads, and with more seats or bags.

Picking up your hire car at Tirana Airport

Tirana Airport (TIA) is about 25 minutes by car from the city centre.

Meeting the company

Some companies meet you at the airport, others at a parking office nearby. Your voucher says which and gives the company’s phone number. Keep your phone on the day before pickup and during the rental.

Late flights and early returns

Choose your real times in the search; they are confirmed when you book. For a 03:00 handover at the airport, about two in three cars we checked charged a fee at each end, from €10 and typically €20; the rest charged nothing. The fee is shown before you pay.

Delivery to your hotel

Choose City delivery and enter the address while booking. It is free on some cars and charged on others; the car shows which.

Staying away from a pickup point?

Only listed towns are pickup points. Staying in Dhërmi? The nearest is Himarë, about 35 minutes away. Coming from Ulcinj in Montenegro? The nearest Albanian point is Shkodër.

Montenegro and Croatiafrom free, typically €70

  • The fee covers the whole rental and grows with its length; each car shows its own fee before you pay.
  • Tell the rental company before the trip, as the terms ask.
  • The car always comes back to Albania: one-way hire to another country is not possible.
  • To Montenegro from Tirana Airport: about 2 h to the Muriqan to Sukobin crossing towards Ulcinj, or about 2 h 45 min to Hani i Hotit towards Podgorica, plus any wait at the border.

  • Later cancellations and no-shows keep the advance.
  • To change a booking, cancel it and book again.
  • If the booked car cannot be supplied because of a breakdown or other force majeure, the company must give you one of the same or a higher class at the same price.
