Hire a car in Georgia, priced in dollars

Rent at Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi airport on prices set in US dollars, and learn which mountain roads and regions Georgian rental terms close.

Renting in Georgia, five steps from search to keys

  1. Choose Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi

The same Georgian suppliers cover all three cities, so one car can turn up in each search. Set a different return city if your flight home leaves from another of them.

  2. Look at the total

Bringing a car to a Georgian terminal is often charged: 1,372 of 1,580 Kutaisi cars added a fee for the airport (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). Listings fold that fee into the total.

  3. Check the route rules

Clause 9 shuts named roads and regions to every rental car. Read the list of closed routes below before you plan a trip into the mountains.

  4. Pay the advance online

Expect 15 to 20% of the car’s price; any handover charges are paid at pickup. The voucher email then names the Georgian company and its phone number.

  5. Settle the rest with the company

In the Tbilisi search every car accepted cash for the balance, and 698 a card too (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). Each listing shows its methods.

Car hire around Georgia: the main airports and cities

Car counts (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026); drive times from routes drawn on 23 October 2026; airport facts from the airports’ own pages, read 23 October 2026.

Tbilisi

The biggest search: 1,725 cars, 53 of them based at the airport and 1,699 able to meet you there. The airport sits 17 km south-east of the city, about 25 min from Freedom Square on our route.

It is the start for the S3 north to Gudauri (about 2 h 30 min) and for Telavi and Sighnaghi (about 1 h 30 min each on our route). UK travel advice notes “construction work is currently ongoing in the vicinity of central Tbilisi” (FCDO, September 2026).

Kutaisi

All 1,580 cars in the Kutaisi search could be handed over at the airport, 1,372 for a fee. The airport is about 35 min from the city centre, and its own site puts it 200 km from Tbilisi.

The nearest of the three to Svaneti: Zugdidi lies about 1 h 30 min off, Mestia about 5 h 30 min. UAG, the state airports company, calls Kutaisi a base airport for Wizz Air.

A red tugboat crossing Batumi harbour, with the city along the shore and green mountains behind

Batumi

No Batumi car listed the airport as its home base, but 1,178 of 1,183 could be brought out to it, 1,074 for a fee. Europe Square is about 10 min away and Kobuleti about 40 min.

Inland, clause 9 forbids rental cars on the Goderdzi Pass road to Akhaltsikhe. Our route to Tbilisi runs along the S2, S12 and S1 instead, about 5 h to Freedom Square.

Paying in Georgia: cards, deposits, dollars

Each city search (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). The same Georgian companies supply all three cities, so a car can appear in more than one row and the rows are not totalled.

No car asked for a credit card

Not one car in the three searches required one: 1,725 in Tbilisi, 1,580 in Kutaisi and 1,183 in Batumi. Clause 15 still lets a Georgian company insist on an embossed credit card under the lead driver’s name; the listing and voucher would show it.

Deposit-free cars

1,375 of 1,725 Tbilisi listings carried no deposit, the third-biggest share among the 19 places in our cross-check (cross-check dated 23 October 2026, every place searched for 16 to 23 November). The rest show theirs up front, and on some a higher cover level brings it down to nothing.

A dollar deposit

A Ford C-Max we quoted in Tbilisi on 23 October 2026 came with a $200 deposit, which displayed as €178. Because the company sets it in dollars, its euro value moves with the exchange rate.

Cash for the balance

All 1,725 Tbilisi cars accepted cash at handover and 698 a card as well. On 23 October 2026, 3 of the 6 Georgian cars we priced in full (collection 16 November) took cash only.

One limit to those rankings: the Tbilisi count comes from a city search that takes in town delivery, and a few places were airport-only searches, so the rankings point the way but are not a like-for-like tally.

Picking up at Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi airports

Airport set as the pickup and return place (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). The median includes cars charging nothing, and every charge sits inside the car’s total.

Kutaisi Airport (KUT)1,5801,580208median €143, top €624
Batumi Airport (BUS)1,1831,178104median €160, top €802

Finding your company

Georgian companies meet renters in different ways, even at one terminal. Your voucher gives the meeting spot and the number to ring, and clause 11 asks something of you too: keep your phone switched on and answered from the day before your pickup date.

Flights landing at night

Our 23 October 2026 quotes covered 12 cars at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports with pickup and drop-off both set to 03:00, for collection on 16 November. All 12 could still be booked, and 4 added a fee for the hour; we did not test Batumi. Book for the time you actually land.

What Tbilisi cars cost per day

Top 8 models by number of listings among 1,276 Tbilisi cars without a delivery charge (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). Euro figures are converted from the companies’ dollar prices.

  • Without a delivery charge, city by city: Tbilisi cheapest €20, median €44 a day (1,276 cars); Kutaisi cheapest €24, median €38 a day (342 cars); Batumi cheapest €27, median €53 a day (200 cars).
  • A fleet of SUVs: 1,137 of the 1,725 Tbilisi cars were SUVs, a bigger share than any other of the 18 places in our cross-check. Only 87 were small economy cars, the second-smallest share among the 18 places in our cross-check, and 178 were electric or hybrid, the third-biggest share among the 18 places in our cross-check (cross-check dated 23 October 2026, every place searched for 16 to 23 November).
  • 1,175 Tbilisi cars had four-wheel drive; 1,711 were automatic and 14 manual; 129 showed a daily kilometre limit on the car (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026).
  • 6 Tbilisi listings were right-hand drive, and a badge on the car card says so.
  • Cars with a delivery charge are left out of these prices; on those, the handover fee is already inside the total.

Documents a Georgian rental desk checks

  • The licence: your original national licence, with the details repeated in Latin script too, still valid on the day the car goes back. Copies and digital licences are refused (terms, clause 14).
  • Not in Latin letters? Georgia’s traffic law asks a driver to carry a certified translation when the licence is not in Georgian or Latin letters (art. 21(17)). For renting, clause 14 is the rule that counts, and a translation does not stand in for Latin-script details on the licence itself.
  • International Driving Permit: if your licence is only valid in its home country, the Georgian terms strongly recommend carrying a permit and showing it if asked.
  • For UK drivers: UK government advice says a UK licence can be used in Georgia and tells hirers to check with the rental company before travel whether it accepts that licence or wants a 1968 permit.
  • Age: each Georgian listing sets its own, and near-identical models may differ (clause 13). Across the 6 Georgian cars we checked (23 October 2026): minimum ages from 21 to 27, licence held for 2 to 5 years.
  • A card, if required: the Georgian terms let a company insist on an embossed credit card registered to the main driver, or to take a debit card on identical terms (clause 15); the booking and voucher make clear which.
  • Your phone: the number you book with, including its country code, has to be reachable for the whole hire and on the day before it, by phone call or by message on Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram (clause 11).

Georgian cover levels and their limits

Four tiers

Minimum coverage is the base, rising to Basic coverage, Full Coverage and finally Full Coverage Plus. Some Georgian cars offer fewer. 1,089 of 1,725 Tbilisi cars had Full Coverage Plus (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026).

Cover that removes the deposit

On a Ford C-Max we quoted on 23 October 2026, for collection on 16 November, the €178 deposit at Minimum coverage dropped to zero from Basic coverage upward.

Parts left out

The wheels, underbody, windscreen and interior fall outside standard insurance (clause 5).

Damage done on purpose

Deliberate damage, vandalism or neglect stays uninsured whatever level you bought (clause 7).

No cover on closed routes

On every road and in every region clause 9 forbids, no insurance applies at all. The list is further down.

Driving in Georgia: what the traffic law expects

Georgia’s Law on Road Traffic in its official English translation (the 2019 to 2020 edition, the latest in English), the Administrative Offences Code, and UK travel advice updated 15 September 2026.

On the road

  • Traffic keeps to the right on every Georgian road (art. 31(1)).
  • On open roads, keep right: drivers “shall not take the left lane, where the right lane is empty” (art. 31(11)). Overtake on the left (art. 34(1)).
  • At a junction where no priority is set, give way to whoever approaches from your right (art. 32(12)).
  • Sound the horn only to head off an accident or, outside built-up areas, to warn that you are about to overtake; flashing the lights can give that signal too (art. 48).
  • Dipped or main beams and rear lights go on in darkness and poor visibility (art. 49(1)). The Road Traffic law sets no daytime-headlight duty for cars.
  • Hand-held phone use is banned; an earpiece or speaker is allowed if both hands stay on the wheel (art. 21(8)).
  • The driver and front-seat passengers wear belts (art. 21(9)).

Cattle, lighting and markings

  • Herds on the road must have a drover with them, aged 16 or over, and animals keep in single file at the edge of the road (art. 22). UK travel advice still warns that “stray livestock can be a hazard”.
  • The same advice says “roads outside city centres are often badly lit and poor quality” and to take care when driving, especially at night.
  • It also says “road markings and the right of way can be confusing”.

What the code punishes

  • Drink: above 0.3 per mille in the blood is drink-driving. Up to 0.7 means a six-month suspension; above 0.7, or refusing the test, a year (art. 116). Drink nothing before you drive.
  • Belts: the fine falls on the driver (art. 118¹).
  • Phones: using one while driving is punishable (art. 118²).
  • Speed: fines rise in bands above the limit, and average-speed sections between cameras count (art. 125). Limit figures are not printed here yet; follow the signs.

Georgia’s mountain roads: passes, gorges and closures

Notices from the Roads Department of Georgia, the state road agency, read on 23 October 2026; drive times from routes drawn on 23 October 2026.

Check georoad.ge before a mountain drive

The Roads Department posts road closures and reopenings with date and time on its restrictions page. The newest when we read it, 19 October 2026: “Traffic Temporarily Prohibited on the km 177-km 178 Section of the Zugdidi-Jvari-Mestia-Lasdili Road”.

  • North to Gudauri and Stepantsminda: from Tbilisi Airport the S3 reaches Gudauri in about 2 h 30 min and Stepantsminda in about 3 h on a clear road. The Gudauri to Kobi stretch of that road was closed to all traffic or to trailers 13 times between 25 February and 10 April 2026, and the road was shut in the Dariali Gorge on the morning of 25 September 2026, reopening at 11:30. The Roads Department reports a 166-metre-high arch bridge under construction on a new Kvesheti to Kobi road; it is not open. The car may not carry on over the border at the end of the road (clause 10).
  • Svaneti: Kutaisi Airport is the closer start, about 5 h 30 min to Mestia on our route, which comes in from the Zugdidi side. That road has its own notices too; one on 18 March 2026 read “Traffic has been restored on the Jvari-Mestia section”. Beyond Mestia, the Babili-Lasdili and Ushguli-Lasdili sections were shut from 19 to 23 July 2026, inside the 1 May to 30 September window clause 9 allows for that route.
  • Goderdzi Pass: the Roads Department lists its own entries for this road, but clause 9 forbids rental cars on the Akhaltsikhe to Batumi route over it at any time of year.
  • High-clearance first: some sections reopen to high-clearance vehicles before anything else, as with “Traffic Restored for High-Clearance Vehicles on the Lechuri-Omalo Section” (8 October 2026). Omalo is on the clause 9 list in any case.
  • Weather: UK travel advice warns that “heavy rain, flooding and snow at higher altitudes can affect roads and bridges making travel difficult or impossible”, particularly in remote areas, and that “landslides are common”.

Georgian roads and regions closed to hire cars

What Georgia’s rental clauses 8 and 9 say, checked against the extras on offer. They apply to every car.

The clause 9 list

The Akhaltsikhe to Batumi road over the Goderdzi Pass; the Sairme to Abastumani road; and the regions of Truso, Juta, Vashlovani, Tusheti, Omalo, Shatili, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

  • Clause 8 already confines Georgian rental cars to paved public roads. Clause 9 adds the named list, gives “the emergency condition of the road surface” as its reason, and says no insurance of any kind is valid there.
  • Mestia, Ushguli, Lentekhi: clause 9 says travel along this route “is permitted only for vehicles equipped with the travel authorization option and is allowed exclusively during the period from May 1 to September 30.” The option is a priced extra; 689 of 1,725 Tbilisi cars carried it (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026).
  • Four-wheel drive makes no difference. 1,175 of the 1,725 Tbilisi cars had it in the same search, and the list applies to each one.
  • UK travel advice says the boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Ossetia “are generally unmarked and away from roads”.

Winter tyres and chains under Georgian law

Administrative Offences Code, article 119, and the booking partner’s extras data.

Article 119

Georgian law can make winter tyres compulsory on every wheel for set periods on set roads, and on some segments chains on at least two driving wheels, fitted over the winter tyres rather than in place of them.

  • A car without them can be stopped and impounded until the case is decided (art. 119, notes 17 and 18).
  • No dates or road sections are named here yet; check with the company before a winter trip.
  • 1,183 of the 1,725 Tbilisi cars sold winter tyres as an extra and 795 sold snow chains (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026), with the price shown on each car.

After a crash in Georgia: ring the company first

Georgia rental terms clause 6, UK travel advice for the emergency number, and the Law on Road Traffic, article 52.

What clause 6 asks of you

Ring the company the moment it happens and get a police report; only the company can excuse you from the report. Skip either and the car’s insurance falls away, with the full cost yours.

  • Emergencies: dial 112 for an ambulance, the police or the fire service.
  • Warn other drivers: after an accident, or a forced stop where stopping is banned and others cannot see the car in time, Georgian law asks for the hazard lights and a warning triangle at least 15 metres from the car in built-up areas and 30 metres outside them (art. 52). With no triangle in the car, warn approaching traffic some other way.
  • The voucher: it carries the company’s phone number; keep it where you can reach it while driving.

Parking, fuel and paying in lari around Georgia

Georgian operators’ own figures (read 23 October 2026). Under clause 12 you pay fines, fuel and parking.

  • Kutaisi Airport has a 24-hour car park of more than 300 spaces. Its parking page lists 2 GEL for 1 hour and 10 GEL for 5 to 24 hours for a car, with nothing shown for the hours between; the airport’s page.
  • Tbilisi and Batumi airports publish no tariff table; Tbilisi offers a parking fee calculator. Where the hire car goes back is fixed by your voucher, not by these car parks.
  • Tbilisi city runs a municipal parking service; we could not read its zones or prices, so check there or with the company.
  • Tolls: no official source we found says whether Georgian roads are tolled or not. If it matters for your route, ask the company.
  • Lari: Georgia’s currency is the lari (GEL). UK travel advice says prices may be quoted in dollars or euros yet must be paid in lari, and to carry lari cash in rural areas.
  • Fuel: bring the car back with the level you received; a shortfall is charged at the Georgian company’s rates, and you get nothing back for leaving more (clause 3).
  • Cleaning and pets: washing is billed to you if the car comes back too dirty to inspect (clause 4); pets only if small and in a carrier (clause 16).

  • We did not read Batumi to Kutaisi; search it for your dates.

Georgian hire cars stay inside Georgia

Clause 10 of the Georgia rental terms, and what our searches turned up.

  • Clause 10 does not allow a rental car to be driven across Georgia’s borders, with no exception for Armenia, Turkey or Azerbaijan.
  • On 23 October 2026 no Georgian car we quoted had a cross-border option, and one-way searches from Tbilisi to Yerevan (Armenia), Batumi to Trabzon (Turkey) or Tbilisi to Baku (Azerbaijan) returned nothing, for collection on 16 November.
  • Abkhazia and South Ossetia are on the clause 9 list of regions closed to rental cars as well.
  • For a neighbouring country, hand the car back in Georgia and continue without it.

Car sizes for Georgian groups

Tbilisi search (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026).

  • A party of four or fewer: a five-seat car whose boot fits your bags.
  • Five to nine: 232 of the 1,725 Tbilisi cars seated seven, eight or nine; without a delivery charge, cheapest €24, median €56 a day. Narrow the list with the seat filter.
  • Ten and up: two cars. Across the three Georgian searches nothing had more than 9 seats.
  • Children: Georgian companies sell baby and child seats and boosters as extras where offered.
  • Extra driver: offered on 1,658 of 1,725 Tbilisi cars, each showing the fee, the driver age and licence years it asks for.

Georgian bookings: cancel, change, extend

Cancelling without penalty

No penalty if you cancel at least 7 days before the start (luxury cars and convertibles: 30). The flexible-cancellation add-on moves that deadline to 24 hours; 999 of 1,725 Tbilisi cars offered it (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026).

Cancelling by email

Make “Cancel” the subject, attach the voucher, and mail it to the support address the booking rules give. Your refund comes through inside 14 days, with the 6% payment service fee deducted.

Missed deadlines and no-shows

Miss those deadlines, or leave the car uncollected, and you forfeit the advance.

Changing dates or car

Cancel and rebook; your original car goes back into the pool. Only 6 of 1,725 Tbilisi cars were marked “Or similar” (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026); on the others you get the model shown.

If your car is unavailable

Force majeure, a breakdown included, obliges the company to supply the same class or higher, without changing the price or terms.

Keeping the car longer

Tell the company before the end date if you want more time (clause 2). Even a few hours are billed as one day, since the minimum hire is 24 hours (clause 1).

Georgia car hire questions

Will a Georgian rental company want my credit card?

No car in the three Georgian city searches required one: 1,725 in Tbilisi, 1,580 in Kutaisi and 1,183 in Batumi (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). A company may still require an embossed credit card that the lead driver owns (clause 15); read the listing and voucher.

Are there deposit-free cars in Georgia?

Yes: 1,375 of 1,725 cars in Tbilisi, 1,305 of 1,580 cars in Kutaisi and 927 of 1,183 cars in Batumi listed none (Georgia searches, 23 October 2026; a week’s hire from Monday 16 November 2026). Where there is one, it is shown before booking, and a higher cover level can cancel it.

Why does the euro price of a Georgian car change?

Georgian companies price in US dollars and the euro is a conversion. A $200 deposit we saw in Tbilisi on 23 October 2026 displayed as €178; tomorrow’s rate can turn the same dollars into another euro amount.

Can a Georgian hire car go to Armenia, Turkey or Azerbaijan?

It cannot; clause 10 of the Georgia terms keeps it in Georgia. Our 23 October 2026 check found no car offering a cross-border option, and no one-way from Tbilisi to Yerevan (Armenia), Batumi to Trabzon (Turkey) or Tbilisi to Baku (Azerbaijan) could be booked.

Is Ushguli allowed in a rental car?

Only via the Mestia to Ushguli to Lentekhi route, on a car carrying the travel authorisation option, between 1 May and 30 September (clause 9). The option is a priced extra where offered; Mestia itself is not on the clause 9 list.

Are Tusheti, Truso and Juta open to rental cars?

They are not. The terms close Truso, Juta, Vashlovani, Tusheti, Omalo, Shatili, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, plus the Goderdzi Pass and the Sairme to Abastumani road, and void all insurance there. A 4x4 changes nothing.

Which side of the road does Georgia drive on?

The right, on every road (Law on Road Traffic, art. 31(1)). Overtaking is on the left, and on open roads you keep out of the left lane while the right one is free.

Does Georgia require winter tyres or chains?

The law can require winter tyres in set periods on set roads and chains on top of them on some segments, and police can stop a car without them and impound it (Administrative Offences Code, art. 119). Both are extras on the Georgian cars that sell them.
