Phuket car hire, straight from the airport

Pick up at Phuket Airport or in Patong. Pack an International Driving Permit, and agree trips out of Phuket province when booking.

Picking up at Phuket Airport: where, when and the cost

Phuket International Airport sits at Mai Khao, Thalang District, and opens 24 hours, per its operator (checked 23 October 2026).

Where the car is handed over

451 of 463 cars in the Phuket search had the airport as their normal pickup (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026); 12 named a rental office instead. Arrivals come through two terminals: international uses belts 1 to 5, domestic belts 6 to 10.

What airport pickup costs

85 of those 451 added nothing. On the other 366 the charge for both ends ran from 200 THB to 31,000 THB, and half of them were at 1,000 THB or under (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026). The 13 dearest, at 29,000 THB or above, were all cars that also appeared in the Bangkok search. Each total includes the charge.

Landing at night

Put your true landing hour in the search. A handover and a return both set at 03:00 on a 16 to 23 November 2026 hire, quoted on 16 HKT cars on 23 October 2026: 10 charged extra at both ends for that hour, the others did not, and all of them were still offered at that hour.

Finding your company

Meeting arrangements at HKT differ by company. Your voucher holds the meeting point and a phone number; have your phone on, starting the day before you land at HKT. HKT lists rental desks on its first floor, but yours may not have one there, so follow the voucher.

Booking a Phuket car in five steps

  1. Airport or Patong, and your real times

Search Phuket Airport, or Patong to have the car delivered. Type in your real landing time: a handover in the small hours can cost extra.

  2. Settle the route first

Khao Lak, Krabi or the islands mean leaving Phuket province, which the terms want agreed at booking. Look at the car’s province fees before paying.

  3. Hold it with the advance

You pay a slice online to hold it; what remains is settled with the Phuket firm at pickup, through whichever cash or card options that car prints.

  4. Note how your company meets you

Phuket companies do not all meet renters the same way at HKT. The voucher names yours, its meeting point and its phone: the number to ring if your flight into Phuket is late.

  5. Licence and permit at the handover

Your home licence plus the International Driving Permit, both originals; photocopies and phone licences get turned away. Then settle the balance the way the car allows.

Car hire around Thailand: Phuket first, then Krabi, Samui and Bangkok

Fleet numbers: Thai searches dated 23 October 2026 (rentals 16 to 23 November 2026), where one car offered in several towns shows up in each. Drive times are routed from LocalRent’s Phuket Airport and Suvarnabhumi pins with no traffic (23 October 2026), so read them as minimums.

Phuket Airport (HKT)

The island’s fleet starts here, and every Patong and Khao Lak car we found was on the HKT list too. From the airport the Sarasin Bridge is about 30 min away, Patong about 45 min and Nai Harn about 1 h 15 min.

A high view over Patong town and beach with green hills and the sea, under a blue sky with white clouds

Patong

No fleet of its own: all 347 Patong cars were Phuket cars offered for delivery. It is about 45 min from HKT on roads 4031 and 4030, and every car we read on the HKT to Patong one-way carried a charge.

A quiet sandy beach curving round a bay at Khao Lak, with palm trees, green hills and a blue sky with clouds

Khao Lak

Over the bridge in Phang Nga province, so the trip is confirmed at booking. Reckon on about 1 h 30 min up from HKT (roads 402 and 4, then Phet Kasem Road), and all 132 Khao Lak cars were Phuket cars offered for delivery.

A limestone cliff covered in green jungle rising from turquoise water at Ao Nang, under a blue sky

Krabi

HKT to Krabi Town by road: reckon on about 2 h 15 min. Krabi is another province, so confirm the trip at booking. Krabi has its own airport, KBV, yet only 6 of the 174 Krabi cars were based there; 163 were Phuket cars offered for delivery.

A tropical coastline of Koh Samui with palm trees, green hills and a deep blue sea

Ko Samui

An island, so we give no drive time: our routing cannot time a ferry. The Ko Samui search showed 55 cars and Samui Airport 34, every airport car appearing in both, and the UK government’s Thailand advice (our 23 October 2026 reading) says Samui’s rainy season usually runs from November to March.

Traditional Thai temple roofs in front of Bangkok's modern skyline, under a blue sky with white clouds

Bangkok

A separate fleet of 170: 85 based at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), 31 at Don Mueang (DMK). 15 wanted a credit card and none came without a deposit, unlike Phuket. The mapped drive from Suvarnabhumi to Siam, about 50 min, runs on tolled expressways.

An old blue boat beached on the Pattaya shore with the blue sea and a bright sky with white clouds

Pattaya

All 69 Pattaya cars were in the Bangkok search too, delivered in town, with none based at U-Tapao airport that week. From Suvarnabhumi the mapped route takes about 1 h 45 min.

Licence, permit and papers for Thailand

Papers to carry

  • Home licence plus IDP: Thailand’s terms ask for both, neither expiring before the car is due back. In their words: “Copies and electronic driving licences will not be accepted.”
  • ASEAN licences: Thai tourism guidance accepts them for driving, yet the rental terms still want the permit from every renter.
  • From the UK: the UK government says to carry the 1968 permit with your UK licence, and to buy it before you leave, as it is sold only in the UK (checked 23 October 2026).
  • Your passport: police may ask to see it; the UK government says a copy of the photo page is usually enough.

Set by each car

  • Age and years licensed: similar models can differ. Across 5 Phuket quotes (taken 23 October 2026; seven days from 16 November 2026), cars wanted drivers aged 20 to 23 at minimum, and a licence held for 1 to 3 years.
  • Reachable phone: the number you give at booking, with its country code, must be one you will pick up on, starting a day ahead of collection and running until you return the car, by call or on WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram.

Paying in Phuket: cards, deposits and baht

Phuket Airport list, 16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, listed 23 October 2026. Baht throughout, as the search priced them.

Credit card optional

Zero of 463 Phuket cars demanded one. Bangkok runs a separate fleet, where 15 of 170 did.

Small deposits

18 held nothing at all, and 207 in total held 5,000 THB or less. Use the deposit filter to see only those.

Baht notes for the deposit

On 443 of 463 the deposit could be left in cash; 2 would take cards and nothing else.

Balance on handover

15 to 20% is paid online up front; the company takes the rest when you meet. 461 cars named cash for it and 179 a card.

Airport, delivery and night charges are built into each total. On the single car we quoted that carried a handover charge, the online part covered only the rental itself, which left that charge to be paid in person.

  • Against our other destinations: None of the 18 SabreCar markets set beside Phuket let the deposit be left in cash on a larger share of cars (443 of 463 here). Cars with nothing held were the opposite story: only two of those 18 places had a smaller share of them than Phuket’s 18 of 463.
  • How far that comparison goes: we ran a single search per market, each one priced for pickup on 16 November 2026 and seven days’ hire, run over 22 and 23 October 2026. Phuket’s is an airport search, while 15 of the others searched a whole city, where cars brought to a hotel or address count as well.

Driving in Thailand: Phuket’s numbered roads, the bridge north and the wet months

Routes from map routing of 23 October 2026, a description of the roads only; seasons and boats from the UK government’s Thailand advice (checked 23 October 2026).

Around the island

  • Numbered roads do the work. Out of the airport you join road 4031. The mapped routes then take 402 towards Phuket Old Town, 4030 for Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata, 4024 for Chalong and Nai Harn, and 4018 for Bang Tao.
  • West-coast beaches run slow. Phuket’s west-coast hill roads take longer than our empty-road times, so treat every time on this page as the least it will take.
  • Tarmac only. Clause 8 keeps every Thai rental on paved public roads, and under clause 9 the car may not leave Thailand, and any trip out of the province is confirmed at booking.
  • Town parking: no official rules or prices turned up for Patong, Phuket Old Town or Krabi, so we print none. Whatever you pay is yours under the terms, and the airport’s own tariff is in the costs table further down.

Off the island and through the year

  • The bridge north. Every routed drive from HKT to Khao Lak, Phang Nga and Krabi leaves the island on road 402, past the Sarasin Bridge, which HKT reaches in about 30 min.
  • A new province on the far side. Crossing into Phang Nga or Krabi is a province change, to be confirmed at booking. 268 of the 463 Phuket Airport cars listed a fee for the southern provinces (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, counted 23 October 2026), shown per car, and some priced it at 0.
  • Tolls: yours under clause 11. We hold no official statement on tolls around Phuket either way, so we make none; the mapped drives out of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport do use tolled expressways.
  • Boats, not bridges, to the islands. Our sources cover no car ferry, and whether the islands fee includes one is unknown, so ask at booking. UK travel advice says: “There are many passenger boat services operating between the mainland and islands. Boats can sink or collide”.
  • The wet months: the FCDO gives the rainy season as generally May to October (November to March on Koh Samui and in the south-east), and notes heavy rain can bring flash floods and road closures, particularly in the north, north-east and mountains.

On Thai roads: priority, motorbikes, and the order of things after a crash

From the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s advice to visiting drivers (published 27 November 2024), UK travel advice and the Thai rental terms, which we went through on 23 October 2026.

What visitors are told

  • Keep left. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) tells visiting drivers to stay on the left.
  • Speed: TAT says limits vary by area and type of road. We print no figure; follow the posted signs.
  • Drink and belts: “Avoid driving under the influence”, in TAT’s words, and wear a seat belt on every trip.
  • Crossings: TAT asks drivers to take care near pedestrian crossings, “as pedestrians have the right of way.”
  • Motorbikes: the UK government’s advice reads “Thailand has a high number of road traffic accidents, particularly with motorcycles.”
  • Helmets: TAT: riders and passengers must wear helmets. FCDO: by law, a helmet when riding a motorcycle.
  • Hire scooters: the FCDO says those offered in tourist areas “are often unregistered and cannot be used legally on a public road.”

After a crash, in this order

  • First, clause 6: get word to the Phuket firm straight after, and have the police put it in a report. Miss either step, and unless the company has agreed to that, the policy on the car lapses and every cost lands on you.
  • The permit (clause 13): without an IDP the insurer may refuse to pay out.
  • TAT’s steps: help the injured and dial 1669, report it to the police on 191, and tell the rental provider. TAT also lists 1137 for accident reporting.
  • UK travel advice: police 191, ambulance 1669, fire 199, tourist police 1155, plus the Thailand Tourist Police app for visitors without a Thai SIM.

Driving outside Phuket province: fees and limits

Rental terms plus the province fees on HKT cars, 16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, listed 23 October 2026.

Agree any trip out of Phuket province when you book

The terms want any drive out of the province confirmed when you book, since companies price and allow it differently. Some cars show a fee per region before you pay. On one car quoted for 3 days and again for 14, the islands fee held at 2,500 THB and the Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin fee at 15,000 THB: one sum per hire, not per day.

  • Inside Thailand. Crossing a national border is not permitted, and the Thai extras list carried no cross-border extra when read on 23 October 2026. A Penang, Malaysia return from Phuket Airport showed zero cars when searched on 23 October 2026.
Province feeCars listing it, of 463Fees seen, whole rental
Southern provinces (Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi mainland)268500 to 2,100 THB; 0 on 4 of 7 cars
Islands (Phangan, Samui, Ko Lanta)2571,400 to 7,500 THB; 0 on 3 of 9 cars
Central provinces (Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin)18110,000 to 20,000 THB
Northern provinces (Chiang Mai)15315,000 to 30,000 THB

Fees seen: across the 20 Phuket cars we priced, 10 of which listed at least one province fee. Why 4 of the cars priced the Southern provinces fee at 0 when collected in Phuket is not explained in the data; ask the company. Khao Lak and Phang Nga Town lie in Phang Nga province, named in the Southern provinces fee.

Cover levels on Phuket cars

Which levels the HKT cars carried, 16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, listed 23 October 2026, and the gaps in standard cover.

Four levels, set per car

From Minimum coverage at the bottom to Full Coverage Plus. Basic coverage appeared on 405 of 463, Full Coverage on 199 and Full Coverage Plus on 124.

Sometimes just the minimum

2 of the 5 Phuket cars quoted on 23 October 2026 offered nothing above Minimum coverage.

No deposit does not mean no damage bill

One quoted car held no deposit on its lower levels yet capped your damage bill at a set sum; only Full Coverage Plus took that cap to zero.

Outside standard cover

Clause 5 leaves out damage to wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior; clause 7 leaves out anything deliberate or from neglect.

Theft and personal accident

Set car by car. Of 5 Phuket cars quoted 23 October 2026 (Phuket pickups 16 to 23 November 2026), 3 had one or both included at no extra price, and on 1 they were a paid option.

The permit and the claim

Clause 13 is blunt: without an International Driving Permit the insurer may refuse to pay out after an accident. What to do at the scene is in the road section above.

Tolls, parking and fuel: costs you pay yourself

Under the rental terms these are the renter’s. Airport parking as Phuket Airport prints it, checked 23 October 2026.

CostWhat we found
TollsYours, like fines. No toll tag or toll package appeared among the Thai extras on 23 October 2026.
HKT car parkA building of 1,254 spaces in all, opposite the international terminal, plus a car park facing the domestic one. 15 minutes free, then 25 for an hour and 250 for 7 to 24 hours; the airport prints no currency, and a part hour is billed as a whole one.
FuelClause 3: return the level you were given. Come back short and you pay the difference at the Phuket company’s fuel rates; extra is not paid back.
Where to return itWhatever your voucher names; at HKT that need not be either of the airport car parks above.

Seats, child seats and extra drivers

Phuket Airport cars, 16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, listed 23 October 2026.

  • Up to seven: 75 Phuket Airport cars had 7 seats (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026); filter on seats to list them.
  • Eight or more: 6 vans went beyond 7 seats, up to 11; failing that, book two cars.
  • Children: child seats were offered on 443 cars, boosters on 333 and infant seats on 250 (counted 23 October 2026), each priced on the car.
  • Sharing the driving: 345 of 463 sold a second-driver extra, priced on the car next to its age and licence-years rules.
  • Kilometres: 27 cars capped the daily distance, at 100 km or 150 km; the rest showed no cap.

Cancelling or changing a Phuket booking

Counts from Phuket Airport, 16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket rentals, listed 23 October 2026.

  • The 24-hour cancellation option: carried by 69 of 463 HKT cars (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026). With it, you can pull out without penalty up to 24 hours ahead.
  • Without it: cancelling a week (7 days) or more ahead carries no penalty, while the premium class and convertibles want 30 days; at HKT 36 cars were premium class and 17 convertibles.
  • Sending it: an email to the booking partner, subject line “Cancel”, the voucher as an attachment. The advance should come back within 14 days, short of the 6% service fee the booking partner keeps.
  • Late or absent: the advance is forfeited. To switch dates or car, you cancel and book afresh.
  • Model guarantee: 245 cars were sold as the exact model, 218 as “Or similar”, which allows a comparable car, as listed 23 October 2026. Should a breakdown or any other case of force majeure leave the company unable to hand over your car, you are owed a car of that class or better, same terms, same price.
  • Extending: agree the extra time with the Phuket company ahead of the return date. Thailand’s terms (clauses 1 and 2) bill per 24 hours; run a few hours late and that is another day.

Phuket car hire FAQ

Is an International Driving Permit compulsory for a Phuket rental?

Yes. Thailand’s rental terms want the permit alongside your home licence, each still in date when the car goes back, and they say plainly: “Copies and electronic driving licences will not be accepted.” That holds for renters from other ASEAN countries as well, although Thai tourism guidance lets those licences be used on the road. UK drivers: the UK government names the 1968 permit, which is sold only inside the UK.

Will a debit card do for a Phuket hire car?

On the Phuket Airport list, yes: not one of the 463 cars insisted on a credit card (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026). For the deposit, 2 named cards as the only method, so look at what your car takes. If a company wants a card at all, it has to be embossed, physical and in the lead driver’s name.

Are there Phuket cars with nothing held as a deposit?

Some: 18 of the 463 at the airport held none, and 207 (those 18 among them) held 5,000 THB or less (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026). The deposit figure sits on every car in the results.

Is collecting the car at Phuket Airport free?

Not on every car. Of the 451 cars handed over by default at Phuket International Airport (HKT), 85 charged nothing for it (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026); the rest priced in a charge for both ends, already part of the total shown.

Can I drive a Phuket hire car to Krabi, Khao Lak or Ko Samui?

Only if it is arranged at booking: the Thailand terms want out-of-province driving confirmed then. Some cars list a fee per region, covering the Southern provinces (Phuket, Phang Nga and the Krabi mainland), the islands of Phangan, Samui and Ko Lanta, Bangkok with Pattaya and Hua Hin, or Chiang Mai. On the car we priced for different lengths, that fee was one fixed sum for the whole hire, shown on that Phuket car ahead of payment.

Can the car cross into Malaysia?

No. Thailand’s terms keep a rental car inside the country, and the Thai extras list carried no cross-border extra when read on 23 October 2026. A Phuket Airport pickup with a Penang return found zero cars (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026).

Which side of the road do you drive on in Thailand?

The left, in line with the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s advice for visitors who drive.

Who do I ring after a crash in Thailand?

The rental company first, straight away, then get the police to write it up: the Thai rental terms cancel the insurance if either is missing, unless the company agrees otherwise. For emergency help the UK government gives 191 for police, 1669 for an ambulance, 199 for fire and 1155 for the tourist police.

How late can I cancel a Phuket booking without penalty?

A week ahead on ordinary cars, a month (30 days) ahead on luxury models and convertibles, or a day (24 hours) ahead where the 24-hour cancellation option was bought; 69 of the 463 at Phuket Airport had that option (16 to 23 November 2026 Phuket hire, as listed 23 October 2026). Whatever happens, the 6% charge for payment processing stays with the booking partner.
