Muscat and Salalah car hire

Muscat and Salalah airports each have their own cars. Wadis and desert tracks are off limits, even in a four-wheel drive.

Car hire around Oman: Muscat in the north, Salalah in the far south

Car counts (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week); routes from each airport drawn 23 October 2026 for empty roads; airport, weather and police notes from the official pages read 23 October 2026.

Muscat

The bigger pool: 160 cars, 31 of them based at Muscat International (MCT). From the terminal, Mutrah Corniche is about 35 min and Old Muscat about 40 min; inland, Nizwa is about 2 h and Sur on the coast about 3 h.

Muttrah is a delivery point, not a fleet of its own: all 6 cars offered there were Muscat cars. The MCT car-park machines take Omani rials only.

Salalah

A separate, smaller fleet of 32 cars in Dhofar, just over 1,000 km from Muscat by road; 27 of them never showed up in the Muscat search, and 11 needed a credit card. Mirbat cars all came from the Salalah pool.

From the airport, the centre is about 15 min and Mughsail Beach about 40 min. Late June to mid-September is the khareef, when Oman’s Met office warns of drizzle-slick roads and mist; the SLL car-park machines take cards as well as rials.

Both searches cover a single November week; we have not checked other seasons.

Booking an Omani hire car in three steps

  1. Muscat or Salalah first

Each city has its own fleet. Collect at the airport or ask for town delivery; pick the other city for the return on a one-way.

  2. Card rule and kilometre cap

Every car shows whether it needs a credit card, its deposit and any daily distance limit. On a long drive, the cap matters as much as the rate.

  3. Advance online, rest at the meeting point

Booking rules let the company take 15 to 20%; every Oman price quote dated 23 October 2026 (car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), took 15% of the rental price, about 13.5% of the total on a car carrying delivery charges. Bring your licence to the meeting point on the voucher and pay the balance there by a listed method.

  • US dollar day rates: Muscat started at US$16 a day, with a median of US$45; Salalah started at US$26, with a median of US$52 (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). Search your dates for a live price.
  • Gearboxes: 159 of 160 Muscat cars automatic, one manual; every one of the 32 Salalah cars automatic.
  • Distance caps: 149 of 160 in Muscat and 25 of 32 in Salalah set a daily limit, shown on the car.
  • Against our other destinations: only one had a bigger share of SUVs than Muscat, and only two a bigger share of automatics (SUVs across 18 destinations, automatics across 19; our searches of 22 and 23 October 2026 for the 16 November week). Treat it as rough: Muscat’s figures come from a city search with MCT handover, while a few places were searched at their airport alone.

Omani deposits, cards and cash

Muscat and Salalah requirements (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).

Card needed?

None of the 160 Muscat cars required one; Salalah, 11 of 32. A Salalah car we quoted wanted no deposit yet still demanded a card, so read the car, not only the deposit line.

No deposit at all

65 of 160 Muscat cars and 19 of 32 Salalah cars. The deposit filter narrows the search; each car states its own.

Cash for the deposit

72 Muscat and 13 Salalah cars named cash as a deposit method; Muscat’s cash share topped 13 of our 18 other destinations (Muscat set against 19 destinations; our searches of 22 and 23 October 2026 for the 16 November week). One of the 6 Omani quotes we took had the deposit by card alone.

The balance

Across the 6 Omani price quotes dated 23 October 2026, cash worked on all 6 and a card on 5; one was cash-only. Read the methods on your car.

Day rates here are US dollars, the currency of the booking partner’s Oman search data; deposit, airport and drop-off figures from our quotes are euros, as requested in those quotes. Oman’s own currency is the rial, pegged by the Central Bank of Oman at US$2.6008 per rial since 1986. Charges for the airport, a drop-off in the other city or a night handover, where they apply, are in each car’s total before booking.

Picking up at Muscat or Salalah airport

Two airports, just over 1,000 km apart by road.

Pickup at either airport

Our 23 October 2026 quotes, pickup 16 November 2026, covered 4 Muscat cars at Muscat International Airport (MCT) and 2 Salalah cars at Salalah Airport (SLL), and all of them could meet you there. 31 of the 160 Muscat cars were based at Muscat airport (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), so check your car’s pickup place.

Airport fees

MCT: 2 of 4 added nothing, the rest up to €13.38 at each end. SLL: 1 of 2 added nothing, the other €8.92 at each end (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). The fee is in the price before booking.

A 03:00 arrival

Use your real landing time. Of 12 MCT cars re-priced with pickup and return both at 03:00 (23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), 8 added a charge at each end for that hour and the rest nothing; every one remained bookable.

Where to go

Meeting arrangements vary from one Omani company to the next. Your voucher shows where to meet and the phone number; the rental desks listed on the airports’ websites are the airports’ own partners, so follow the voucher.

What an Omani rental desk asks for

  • Licence: the original, valid national licence with details in Latin script, valid until at least the last rental day; no copies or electronic versions. If it is valid only in its issuing country, Oman’s terms say an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended as well.
  • UK photocard: the UK’s Oman travel page (23 October 2026) says it can be used to drive a rental car in Oman for your first 6 weeks after arrival. A longer stay or a paper licence is another matter; read the advice before you travel.
  • Age: set per Omani car, and lookalikes may not match. In the 6 Omani price quotes dated 23 October 2026 (car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), the minimum age ran from 21 to 25, with 1 to 3 years since the driver’s licence was issued, depending on the car.
  • Card, where required: this matters more in Salalah, where 11 of 32 cars wanted one (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week): a physical, embossed credit card held by the main driver; a debit card, where taken, must pass the same three tests.

Driving in Oman: camels, roundabouts and the Royal Oman Police list

What the Royal Oman Police (ROP) online offence list, undated, counts as an offence, with the UK Foreign Office’s Oman page; both read 23 October 2026. No fine amounts are given here.

Offences that catch visitors out

  • Overtaking: passing on the right is an offence on a road of fewer than three lanes, unless the car ahead has signalled left, and so is failing to move back to the right afterwards.
  • Speed: the ROP list starts its speeding offences at 5 km/h over the limit on the signs. Owning or using a radar detector is an offence, and so is warning other drivers about speed radars.
  • Roundabouts: cars already in the roundabout have priority; slow down as you approach, and never overtake or stop inside one.
  • Fast lane: dawdling in a lane marked as the fast lane of a multi-lane road is an offence.
  • Slow down at souqs, near hospitals and crowded places, and near schools or road works where signs say so.
  • Horn: using it to disturb others, or when there is no need, is on the list.
  • A clean car: driving one that is dirty inside or out is an offence too, and clause 4 adds a wash charge when dirt stops the company inspecting the car.

Animals, lights and behaviour

  • Camels and goats wander onto the road, the Foreign Office warns, and the ROP counts failing to slow down for animals as an offence.
  • Lights on whenever fog, dust or rain cut visibility (ROP).
  • Alcohol: the Foreign Office says drink-driving is illegal and any alcohol found in a test may bring a fine and possible imprisonment.
  • Temper: swearing and rude gestures are illegal in Oman, the Foreign Office notes, “including while driving”.
  • Ramadan: in daytime, do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public, and the Foreign Office adds “including in your car”.
  • Phones, belts, children: no mobile at the wheel, belts for every passenger, and a child seat for children aged 3 and under (Foreign Office); add seats at booking where the car lists them.
  • The Foreign Office sums it up: the Omani authorities strictly enforce traffic laws.

Wadis, the khareef and cyclones: Omani weather at the wheel, and after a crash

The UK Foreign Office, Oman’s Directorate General of Meteorology, the Oman News Agency, the transport ministry and gov.om, all read 23 October 2026; clause 6 of the Oman terms.

  • Wadi floods, October to March: rain can bring sudden floods to dry riverbeds and to the roads that cross them (Foreign Office). If one catches you, go to high ground, do not try to cross the water, and drive to a dry spot.
  • Cyclones: tropical cyclones from the Indian Ocean sometimes affect Oman in July and August, the Foreign Office says, disrupting services.
  • The khareef in Dhofar: persistent drizzle from late June to mid-September. The Met office’s advice: roads can be slippery, and use fog lights in misty areas. Its fog page names Dhofar among the most affected coastal governorates, with visibility “sometimes reduced to several meters”.
  • Wadi Harit checkpoint: in the 2026 khareef the ROP said traffic control for Dhofar began at its Wadi Harit checkpoint, with a QR code for a map of other routes and guidance on mountain driving, and that police and the municipality worked “to grant traffic priority to the most congested lanes at traffic lights” in Salalah (Oman News Agency, 2 August 2026).
  • Driving down to Salalah: a 2025 transport ministry road campaign urged drivers heading to Salalah to use the Sultan Said bin Taimour Road through Adam, Haima and Thumrait, which it calls “the main dual carriageway”, rather than the roads through the oil concession areas.
After a crash or a breakdown

Clause 6 comes first: tell the Omani company at once and get a police report, unless the company agrees otherwise, or the insurance is cancelled. After a serious accident the Foreign Office says stay with the vehicle and call the Royal Oman Police on 9999; after a minor one, fill in the minor road traffic accident form, which rental companies keep in their cars. Stopped by a fault or an emergency? Hazard lights on, or put out a warning sign; the ROP lists not doing so as an offence.

  • Fines: yours to pay under clause 12, through the police app, the ROP website or a service centre (gov.om). The Foreign Office adds that foreign nationals must pay all traffic fines before leaving Oman.

Paved roads only, and distance limits on long drives

Sources: the Oman rental terms; the UK government’s Oman travel page.

  • Omani terms keep rental cars on paved public roads. Sand, dunes, wadi beds and desert tracks are unpaved, so they break the terms in any hire car, four-wheel drive or not.
  • No road or region is listed by name; the paved-road rule decides. Unsure about the way to somewhere? Ask the rental company before setting off.
  • The Foreign Office’s advice for desert and mountain trips (23 October 2026) is a well-equipped four-wheel drive in convoy, water, a phone, plans left with someone and insurance that covers it. That describes a guided trip, not a hire car under clause 8.
  • Distance caps bite on long trips. Muscat to Salalah is just over 1,000 km one way, so there and back tops 2,000 km before you drive anywhere at the far end. The 6 Omani price quotes dated 23 October 2026 (car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), allowed 1,400 km or 1,750 km over the week, and 2 came with no cap: a week’s round trip needs an uncapped car or a bigger allowance. Uncapped cars are scarce here: 11 of 160 in Muscat, and only one destination with mileage data we rely on had a smaller share (Muscat set against 13 destinations; our searches of 22 and 23 October 2026 for the 16 November week).

  • All carried the same drop-off fee, €133.73 (US$150.00), already inside the total.
  • The terms ask you to confirm at booking that the car may leave its home province, and price and conditions are the company’s call. Settle that before a drive this long.
  • Choose the drop-off city in the search and the total includes the fee.

Insurance tiers on Omani cars

Levels vary car by car; this is what standard cover misses.

What the cover levels are called

Minimum coverage (TPL), Basic coverage (CDW) and Full Coverage (SuperCDW); not every car offers each. Basic was on 127 of 160 Muscat cars and Full on 78; in Salalah, 30 and 16 of 32. A further top tier appeared on 26 Muscat cars and no Salalah cars (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).

  • On one Muscat quote of 23 October 2026 (car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), Full Coverage brought the most you could owe for damage down from €959.28 (Minimum or Basic) to €383.36, with the deposit unchanged at €98.96. On the Salalah quote with Full Coverage, that figure stayed put. Check both numbers on your car.
  • Wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior lie outside standard cover.
  • Clause 6 ties the cover to two steps after any accident or damage, set out in the crash notes above; skip them and you pay for everything.
  • Damage caused deliberately, through vandalism or neglect, is uninsured. Extras where listed: theft protection and personal accident insurance.

Muscat car parks

Salalah kerbside

Fuel

Return with as much fuel as at pickup; any shortfall goes on your bill at the Omani company’s rates, any extra fuel is not refunded.

Drives from Muscat and Salalah airports

Omani hire cars stay in Oman

The Oman rental terms on borders and provinces.

No crossing into the UAE

Oman’s terms bar any rental car from crossing the national border, so a car from Muscat or Salalah cannot make even a day trip to the Emirates.

  • There was no cross-border option among the extras on Omani cars on 23 October 2026, so there is no add-on to buy.
  • No car could be booked one way from Muscat to Dubai (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).
  • Within Oman, the terms ask you to confirm at booking that you may take the car out of the province where you collect it. Raise it through the booking partner before paying; permission and price are up to the company.

How many seats in Oman

Searches (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).

  • Four or under: a five-seat car; on a long drive, check its boot holds the luggage.
  • Five to 8: 20 Muscat cars seated 7 and 2 seated 8 (the Nissan Patrol and the Chevrolet Tahoe); Salalah had 3 seven-seaters and nothing bigger. Filter by seats.
  • More than 8 people: book two cars.
  • Children: add a child seat at booking; UK advice says children aged 3 and under must use one.
  • Second driver: free on one of the 6 Omani price quotes dated 23 October 2026 and charged on the rest; the price is on the car.

Omani bookings: cancelling and changes

Penalty-free deadline

Until 7 days before pickup; luxury cars and convertibles, 30; with the flexible-cancellation option, 24 hours, which 102 of 160 Muscat cars and 4 of 32 Salalah cars offered (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).

Sending the cancellation

Email the booking partner, putting “Cancel” as the subject and attaching the voucher. Fourteen days later at most, you have the advance back, bar the 6% payment service fee.

Deadline missed

After the deadline, or missing pickup without arranging it, the full advance is lost. To change dates or car, rebook after cancelling.

“Or similar”

A car so marked can be replaced by a similar model; 75 of 160 Muscat cars carried the mark (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). If force majeure, breakdowns included, keeps the company from providing your car, you are owed the same or a higher class at the agreed price and conditions.

Keeping it longer

Ask the rental company for extra time while the hire is running. Each started 24-hour period counts as a day, so returning a few hours late costs a full one.

Muscat and Salalah rental questions

Do Omani rental companies require a credit card?

In Muscat, not on the cars we found: none of the 160 Muscat cars were marked as needing one (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). Salalah is different, at 11 of 32. Under Oman’s terms a company may ask the main driver for a physical, embossed credit card. The car and voucher show whether it does; a no-deposit car can still require a card.

Is there such a thing as a no-deposit car in Oman?

Yes: 65 of 160 in Muscat and 19 of 32 in Salalah (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). The others show their deposit on the car before booking.

Can an Omani hire car be driven to Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE?

No. Oman’s terms forbid taking a rental car across the border, and no cross-border option was among the Omani extras (23 October 2026). A one-way from Muscat to Dubai found no cars either (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week).

Is the Muscat to Salalah drive realistic in a hire car?

It is just over 1,000 km by road and about 11 h 30 min of non-stop driving. Check the kilometre allowance first, and confirm at booking that the company lets the car leave its home province, as the terms require. 5 cars could be booked one way Muscat to Salalah (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), each with a €133.73 drop-off fee in its total.

Will a UK licence do for an Omani rental?

The UK’s Oman travel page (23 October 2026) lets a UK photocard licence be used for a rental car in Oman during your first 6 weeks; with an old paper licence you may also need a photocard or the 1949 International Driving Permit. Oman’s rental terms want an original licence with Latin-script details, valid until the hire ends.

May I take an Omani rental onto sand, dunes or wadi beds?

No. Oman’s terms allow rental cars on paved public roads only; the rule holds for every car, four-wheel drive included.

How strict is Oman on drink-driving?

The UK’s Oman travel page (23 October 2026) says drink-driving is illegal in Oman, and a driver found with any alcohol in a test may face a fine and possible imprisonment.

Can I collect at Muscat or Salalah airport?

Yes, on the cars we quoted. All 4 Muscat cars we priced could be collected at Muscat airport (MCT), and both Salalah cars at Salalah airport (SLL) (search of 23 October 2026; car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week). Some added an airport fee, shown in the price before booking; the voucher shows where to meet.

From what age can I rent a car in Oman?

Each Omani car sets its own age, and similar models can differ. Across the 6 Omani price quotes dated 23 October 2026 (car collected 16 November 2026, kept a week), minimum ages ran from 21 to 25, with the licence needing to be at least 1 to 3 years old. Each car shows its own figures.
