Right-hand drive car hire in Mauritius

Your car waits at the airport or comes to your town. Hire cars here are right-hand drive, and you keep to the left.

Car hire around Mauritius: the airport and the main towns

A few lines per place, for the driver. Each car offered in a town also turned up in the airport search (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026), and reached the town by delivery. Road times: OpenStreetMap routes of 23 October 2026, empty roads, minutes rounded upward.

Mauritius Airport (MRU)

At Plaine Magnien. All 126 airport cars used “Airport (MRU)” for pickup and drop-off alike (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026): one handover point, with the meeting set by your voucher.

Nearest by road: Mahébourg and Blue Bay, each about 15 min. Port Louis is about 40 min, M1 all the way.

Grand Baie

About 1 h from the airport, the routed drive running M1, M3, then M2; Pereybère is about 1 h too.

From here Port Louis is about 25 min down the M2 and Belle Mare about 40 min, while Le Morne village, at about 1 h 15 min, is the longest leg in our Grand Baie table.

Port Louis

About 40 min from the airport and about 25 min from Grand Baie. The Police du Tourisme work from Line Barracks here.

The smallest of our six town searches: 63 cars (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). We found no official parking rules or prices for the city, so read the street signs.

Flic en Flac beach at sunset with trees on the sand, a few walkers and Le Morne Brabant on the horizon

Flic en Flac

About 45 min from the airport, leaving the M1 for B roads near the end, or about 50 min from Grand Baie.

Flic en Flac and Tamarin (about 45 min from the airport) are both on the Police list of fixed speed-camera places.

Belle Mare

About 1 h from the airport by the A15 and then the B28, or about 40 min from Grand Baie.

The largest of our town searches, 118 cars (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). Its police station hosts a tourist police office.

Le Morne

Le Morne village is about 1 h from the airport, mostly on B roads through the south-west, and the run from Grand Baie needs about 1 h 15 min. We time the village, not the mountain.

The steepest delivery charge in our town searches, €110, was on a Le Morne car (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026); compare totals before you choose.

Mahébourg

About 15 min from the airport on the A12, the shortest drive in our table, with Blue Bay about 15 min from the airport as well.

Blue Bay, the other short hop from the terminal, has a tourist police office at its police station.

Collecting your car at Mauritius airport

The terminal operator gives the address as Plaine Magnien (read 23 October 2026). Car figures: rental dates 16-23 November 2026, checked 23 October 2026.

One pickup point for every airport car

All 126 airport cars named “Airport (MRU)” as both their pickup and their return place. 122 showed no extra handover charge; the remaining 4 had a charge already folded into their price.

Finding your company

The terminal has rental desks on Level 0, yet the firm on your voucher may have no desk there. Each company arranges the meeting its own way: follow the voucher, and have your mobile charged and on from the day before pickup.

Landing in the small hours

We asked for prices on 10 airport cars with pickup and return at 03:00 (quoted 23 October 2026; car out 16 November 2026, back 23 November 2026): all could be booked, and 1 charged extra for that hour, both at pickup and at return. Enter your true arrival time and the fee appears in the quote.

Cash before you leave the terminal

For a car that takes its balance in cash only, the airport lists ATMs on Level 0 in arrivals: MCB near Door 04, SBM and ABSA Bank near Door 07, plus a second MCB in the baggage reclaim hall.

Nearest by road: Mahébourg about 15 min and Blue Bay about 15 min. Allow roughly an hour for the north-coast resorts in our table.

Delivery to Grand Baie, Flic en Flac and other towns

Each town searched as a round trip, rental dates 16-23 November 2026, checked 23 October 2026. Towns share cars between them, which is why these counts overlap.

  • Put Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Port Louis, Le Morne or Belle Mare in the search as the return place, and the drop-off charge lands inside each car’s total.
  • Direction made little difference on the Grand Baie leg: a typical €20 outbound and €20 on the way back to the airport.
  • Whichever town you pick, the car stays in Mauritius: the terms rule out crossing the country’s borders.

Three steps from search to keys

  1. Pick airport or town

Choose the airport to have the car waiting when you land, or a town such as Belle Mare or Le Morne for delivery. The search quotes in euros.

  2. Book with a part payment

Compare totals, since delivery and handover costs already sit inside them, pick the cover you want and settle the advance online. The voucher email names the firm, its phone line and the meeting spot.

  3. Settle up at handover

The balance is due when you collect, and some cars want it in cash only. Check the methods before you fly; for cash, the airport card above lists the ATMs in arrivals.

Deposits, cards and cash on the island’s cars

Our 23 October 2026 look at the 126 airport cars, for rental dates 16-23 November 2026. Deposits and prices are quoted in euros.

  • Credit card: none of the 126 was marked as needing a credit card. Even so, clause 17 of the terms lets a company demand one, and then the card has to be physical and embossed, in the main driver’s name; read your car and voucher.
  • Deposit: 113 of the 126 held no deposit at all when checked on 23 October 2026 (rental dates 16-23 November 2026), which is most cars on that list. Where there is one, its euro amount shows on the car before you commit. Set beside our other destinations, that zero-deposit share (90%) was the highest of all 19 searches, whose median was 37% (cross-market file; its reads: 22 and 23 October 2026; same 16-23 November 2026 hire everywhere; our Mauritius search is the airport, most others are city searches).
  • A deposit in cash: all of the 13 cars that did take a deposit would accept cash for it; the accepted methods are listed per car. Counted across the whole airport list, cash deposits (13 of 126) were scarcer than in a typical search of ours, where the median share was 26%: few cars ask for a deposit at all (cross-market file; its reads: 22 and 23 October 2026; same 16-23 November 2026 hire everywhere; our Mauritius search is the airport, most others are city searches).
  • The advance and the balance: booking takes 15 to 20% up front, online; the company collects the remainder at handover. 126 cars listed cash for the balance and 110 a card. Of 6 cars we priced in full on 23 October 2026, 3 took cash only.

The terms leave how the balance is paid, and how and when a deposit is held and released, to your booking and voucher. Our data showed no timeline for deposit refunds.

Documents to bring to pickup

Licence and permit

  • Your own national licence in the original, still valid when the Mauritius rental ends, with its details also in Latin script. Photocopies and digital licences are refused.
  • A licence that counts only in its issuing country should be backed by an International Driving Permit, which the terms strongly advise carrying and showing on request. Road Traffic Act s. 40 lets an IDP holder drive without a Mauritian licence.
  • UK drivers: the UK government’s travel advice (our 23 October 2026 read) says a photocard licence from the UK works in Mauritius, though a hire company may still want more, such as an IDP.

On the day

  • Age and years of driving: fixed car by car, and even identical models can ask for different things. The 6 airport cars quoted in full on 23 October 2026 (rental dates 16-23 November 2026) put the youngest permitted driver at 18 to 22 and wanted the licence held for 1 or 2 years.
  • Payment for the balance: cash or card, as your car lists. Any card requested, debit cards too, must be physical and embossed and name the main driver.
  • Your mobile: leave a mobile number (with the country code) that you answer for as long as you have the car and on the day before you collect it. If the company fails to reach you on Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram or by phone, the terms say no complaint about service will be accepted.

Driving in Mauritius, from the M1 to the hill roads

Road rules from the Mauritius Police (Traffic Branch page, December 2025), the Road Traffic Act and UK travel advice, all read 23 October 2026. Times routed on 23 October 2026 for an empty road, rounded up.

The M1, M3 and M2

From the airport to Port Louis the routed drive keeps to the M1, about 40 min. For Grand Baie and Pereybère it goes on along the M3 and then the M2, about 1 h in all. The Police put the car limit on motorways (M roads) at 110 km/h unless signs show otherwise; the road letters above are from OpenStreetMap.

A roads, B roads and the south-west

Below the motorways the Police limits drop to 80 km/h on A roads, 60 on B roads, 40 on C roads and 30 in streets. Chamarel, about 50 min by road from MRU, sits inland on hill roads, and Le Morne village (about 1 h) is reached mostly on B roads, so empty-road times run short there.

Roundabouts

On reaching a roundabout, yield to whatever approaches from your right; Mauritian law’s fixed-penalty schedule lists “Failing to give way to traffic from the right when approaching a roundabout” as an offence.

Sharing the road

UK travel advice warns that “Pedestrians and cyclists often use main roads, including motorways, during the day and at night”, and that motorbikes are slow and often ride without lights after dark.

Lamps and horn

Head, rear and number-plate lamps must be lit during hours of darkness, an offence in the Act’s fixed-penalty schedule, which also lists “Unauthorised use of horn”.

Cameras and fines

Fixed speed cameras stand at places the Police name on their Traffic Branch page, Flic en Flac and Tamarin among them. Fixed penalties are paid at the District Court named on the notice, not on the spot, and the Police give 28 days to pay a camera notice at any District Court. That notice reaches the car’s owner first, and an owner who was not driving returns Part B within 14 days so it is served on the driver; how a hire company passes it on, we could not check. The Traffic Branch runs a 24-hour hotline on 166.

Keeping left on Mauritian roads

Sources, all read 23 October 2026: the Mauritius Police Force, the Road Traffic Act, UK travel advice and the rental terms.

Limits and law

  • Left-hand traffic: the terms say so, with the wheel on the right. On a dual carriageway the Road Traffic Act keeps drivers in the left lane except in listed cases, overtaking or turning right among them.
  • Drink: the Police set the limit at 9 micrograms per 100 ml of breath, or a blood level of 20 mg per 100 ml (Traffic Branch page, December 2025). UK travel advice warns of penalties “even at very low levels”, a quarter of England’s legal limit by its account.
  • Phones: a December 2025 Police road-safety leaflet says phone use at the wheel is illegal, hands-free included. Leave yours alone while driving.
  • Costs on the road: under clause 13 the fines, the parking and the fuel are yours, not the rental company’s.

After a knock, or in an emergency

  • The terms first: under clause 6 you notify the Mauritius firm immediately and come away with a police report, unless that firm settles it otherwise with you. Miss either and that insurance lapses, leaving you fully responsible. The Police’s Minor Road Accident Report Form (PF 179), meant for drivers who disagree about what happened, is no substitute for that report.
  • Dial 999. The Police hotline also answers on 112. UK travel advice adds 114 for ambulances and 115 for firefighters.
  • Yellow chalk: the Road Traffic Act says drivers must carry yellow indelible chalk or another yellow indelible marker. In a two-vehicle collision with no one hurt and nothing else damaged, where the cars are likely to block the road, each driver marks the car’s position and registration on the road, then moves it (s. 68J, for the accidents set out in s. 68A); UK travel advice says the same after a breakdown. Ask the company whether the car has one.
  • Tourist police: the Police du Tourisme, created in 2003, works from Line Barracks in Port Louis, the Grand Bay, La Gaulette, Blue Bay and Belle Mare police stations, and the Plaine Champagne police post.
  • Rupees and euros: the island’s own currency is the Mauritian rupee, which is what airport parking is charged in; your rental is priced in euros.

Cyclone season and heavy rain at the wheel

Clause 11 of the rental terms, then three separate sources: the airport operator, the Mauritius Meteorological Services and UK travel advice, all checked on 23 October 2026.

Clause 11, word for word

“Do not use your car during floods and cyclones of category 3 or higher because the insurance does not cover any damage in such cases. Follow flood and cyclone warnings on the my.t weather app or on the Mauritius Meteorological Services website.”

  • Warning classes in hours: the Meteorological Services issue Class I 36 to 48 hours before gusts of 120 km/h are expected, Class II to leave about 12 hours of daylight before them, Class III about 6 hours of daylight, and Class IV once such gusts are recorded. Under Class III their precautions include “Secure vehicles” and “Avoid going outside”.
  • The airport operator, not the terms: the company running the terminal says on its website that driving is prohibited three hours after a Cyclone Warning Class III is issued, and that the airport shuts within three hours of that warning. It generally reopens within three hours of the warning being lifted, once its facilities run again.
  • Two different scales: clause 11 uses the cyclone’s category, the airport the warning class issued in Mauritius. Respect each separately, and leave the car parked when either applies.
  • Season: November to mid May, according to the airport operator; usually November to May, according to the UK government. The week we searched falls inside it.
  • Flights during a warning: in a Class III or IV warning, the operator says, most flights are rescheduled and passengers should speak to their airline. If yours moves, ring the number on your voucher; the terms want advance notice if you need the car longer.
  • Torrential rain: a separate warning, issued once 100 mm has fallen in a given region, or is expected within the hour, and the rain goes on. The Meteorological Services then advise against long trips by car in flood-prone areas: “Do not cross flooded bridges or submerged areas either by foot or by vehicles”. Clause 11 leaves flood damage uninsured as well.
  • Landslides: UK travel advice says some areas are prone to them in cyclones and heavy rain, and that the Meteorological Services run 5-stage landslide warnings.

Cover levels, liability and what is never insured

Cover on the airport cars, listed 23 October 2026 (rental dates 16-23 November 2026), and the exclusions in the terms.

Cover levels

Every car carries its own mix, starting at Minimum coverage. Basic coverage was on 123 of the 126 airport cars, Full Coverage on 67 and Full Coverage Plus on 28.

Zero deposit, not zero risk

We priced a Hyundai Grand i10 on 23 October 2026: its lower levels asked no deposit yet left you liable for up to €750, and Full Coverage Plus cut that to €0.

Outside the standard insurance

Wheels, underbody, windscreen and the car’s interior are left out of the standard insurance, as is anything deliberate: vandalism, neglect, intentional damage.

Floods and strong cyclones

Clause 11 bars using the car in floods and in cyclones of category 3 or above, and damage in those conditions is uninsured.

After damage

Phone the company as soon as it happens; the police must write a report too, unless the company says it is not needed. Without both, the insurance is cancelled.

Extra cover sold separately

Personal Accident Insurance and Theft Protection stand apart from the cover levels, each priced on the Mauritius cars that carry it.

Where you can drive in Mauritius

Paved roads, inside Mauritius

Mauritius’ terms allow paved public roads only and name no specific road as banned, so the surface is what counts. Leaving the country is not allowed either, and on 23 October 2026 not one extra on the Mauritius cars was a cross-border or ferry option.

Airport-to-town and town-to-airport returns are fine: see “Leaving the car in another town” above.

Drive times from the airport and from Grand Baie

Airport parking and fuel in Mauritius

Your costs, not the rental’s. The car park tariff as the terminal operator lists it (read 23 October 2026).

  • Car park: a drop-off under 15 minutes costs nothing. After that it is Rs 50 to 1 hour, Rs 100 to 2 hours, Rs 150 to 4, Rs 200 to 8 and Rs 300 to 24, plus Rs 400 per extra day or part day. Pay at a machine by card or cash, then exit within 15 minutes.
  • Returning the car: all 126 airport cars named “Airport (MRU)” as their return place (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026); your voucher says where at the airport, which may not be the car park.
  • Fuel: return the car at its pickup level (clause 3); any shortfall is charged at that company’s rate. We read no official source on Mauritian filling stations, so we name none; plan the top-up yourself before the return.
  • Port Louis and the resorts: we found no official parking rules or prices, so go by the signs.

Car types at the airport

Count per class among the airport cars, rental dates 16-23 November 2026, listed 23 October 2026. Some cars carry two class labels, so the cards add up to more than the list; your own dates give your own price.

  • Prices: on 23 October 2026, for rental dates 16-23 November 2026, the lowest airport rate came to €26 a day and the median to €45, with any handover charge spread across the days.
  • Gearbox: automatic on 125 of 126; the lone manual was a Mini Cooper S.
  • Fuel: 12 hybrid or electric, 11 diesel. In our cross-destination file that hybrid and electric share (10%) came to about 1.9 times the median of 18 searches (5%) (cross-market file; its reads: 22 and 23 October 2026; same 16-23 November 2026 hire everywhere; our Mauritius search is the airport, most others are city searches).
  • Economy class: 67 of the 126 counted as compact. Only two other destinations of the 18 we set side by side had a larger economy share than this 53% (cross-market file; its reads: 22 and 23 October 2026; same 16-23 November 2026 hire everywhere; our Mauritius search is the airport, most others are city searches).
  • Most-listed models: Suzuki Swift (15), Kia Picanto (9), Hyundai Grand i10 (6), Suzuki Ertiga (6), Suzuki Fronx (6), Toyota Yaris (6).
  • Kilometres: none of them carried a daily or total distance cap.

Seats for couples, families and bigger parties

  • Two to four travellers: 106 of the 126 airport cars were 5-seaters (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026); check the boot against your cases before you pick one.
  • Five to seven: 19 airport cars had 7 seats (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026), the Suzuki Ertiga, Kia Carens and Mitsubishi Xpander among them. Filter on seats.
  • Eight or more: the airport list topped out at 7 seats, so you will need two cars.
  • Children: as extras on 23 October 2026, for rental dates 16-23 November 2026, a child seat on 115 of the 126 airport cars, a booster on 111 and an infant seat on 110, each priced on the car.
  • Extra driver: offered on all 126 airport cars (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). Its price sits on each car, beside the age and licence-years minimums.

Cancelling or changing a Mauritius booking

  • The 24-hour cancellation option: no penalty until 24 hours before pickup, but only 6 of the 126 airport cars had it (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026).
  • Without it: the cut-off for cancelling with no penalty is a week before pickup, or 30 days before for a Mauritius convertible or luxury car.
  • The method: the booking partner takes cancellations by email; title it “Cancel” and include your voucher. The advance is repaid no later than 14 days after you ask, with the exception of the 6% payment service fee.
  • Late, or a no-show: you lose the advance. To move dates or switch cars, cancel and rebook.
  • Exact model or similar: 82 of the 126 airport cars were sold as the named model and 44 as “Or similar”, so the company may hand you a comparable car (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). A breakdown or force majeure that takes your booked car off the road obliges the company to supply a car in the same class or above, keeping the terms and price as booked.
  • Extending: tell the company ahead of your return date. Clause 1 sets a 24-hour minimum charge, so even a few hours with the car cost a whole day.

Questions travellers ask about Mauritius rentals

Is traffic on the left in Mauritius?

Yes. The rental terms describe left-hand traffic and right-hand steering, so expect a right-hand-drive hire car.

Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Mauritius?

Not for the cars we checked. Of the 126 airport cars, read on 23 October 2026 for rental dates 16-23 November 2026, not one was marked credit card required. Under the terms a company may still want one, physical, embossed and naming the main driver, so look at your car and your voucher before you fly.

Can I hire a car in Mauritius with no deposit?

On 113 of the 126 airport cars, yes: they had none when checked (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). A zero deposit does not remove your liability for damage, so weigh the cover levels too.

Will a company bring the car to my hotel area?

Delivery runs to towns including Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Belle Mare and Le Morne. In our town searches (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026), each car offered in those towns also appeared at the airport and was delivered (the booking partner calls it “City delivery”), with any delivery charge already in its price. The voucher fixes the exact meeting point.

What happens to my rental if a cyclone hits?

Damage is then not insured. Clause 11 of the terms: “Do not use your car during floods and cyclones of category 3 or higher because the insurance does not cover any damage in such cases.” Separately, the airport operator says driving is prohibited three hours after a Cyclone Warning Class III is issued.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Mauritius?

Licence valid only where it was issued? Then the Mauritius terms strongly advise a permit. Mauritian law lets an international driving permit holder drive without a local licence. UK visitors: according to UK government advice checked 23 October 2026, a photocard licence from the UK is accepted for driving there.

Which emergency numbers work in Mauritius?

999, or 112, which the Police list beside it as their hotline. UK travel advice gives 114 for ambulances and 115 for firefighters. Once the emergency is handled, call the rental company and have the police make a report.

Is a Mauritian traffic fine paid on the spot?

Not under the fixed-penalty system: the Road Traffic Act has a fixed penalty paid at the District Court named on the notice. For speed-camera notices the Mauritius Police give 28 days, at any District Court. A camera notice is addressed to the car’s owner, which for a hire car is the rental company; we could not check how a Mauritius firm forwards it, and the terms make fines the renter’s cost.

How late can a Mauritius booking be cancelled without penalty?

Up to 7 days before pickup in general (convertibles and luxury cars: 30 days). Took the 24-hour cancellation option at checkout? Then the cut-off moves to 24 hours before pickup, and 6 of the 126 airport cars had that option (23 October 2026, rental dates 16-23 November 2026). Whatever the timing, there is no refund of the 6% payment service fee.
