Where do you collect a car in Barcelona?

Choose El Prat, a city rental office or delivery to your address. Whichever you pick, the voucher names the place, the company and its phone number.

At the airport

At El Prat, a local company meets you where the voucher says, not at a terminal desk. Keep its number with your flight details.

City rental office

Some companies hand over cars at a Barcelona office. The voucher gives the address, so plan how you will get there with luggage and confirm the time with the company.

Delivery to you

Delivery brings the car to your hotel or flat. Any delivery charge is already in the price you see, so enter the full address and compare the total.

Landing at El Prat? Car rental at Barcelona Airport puts you behind the wheel before you head into the city.

Flying into Girona works differently: car hire at Girona Airport means a car delivered in Girona city, not one handed over at the terminal.

Do you need a credit card for car rental in Barcelona?

Only some airport cars here ask for a credit card; the rest list other ways to hold the deposit. Each car shows its rule before you book.

A required card must be a physical card in the main driver’s name, with the details embossed. A debit card works only where the car says it does.

Every Barcelona car holds a deposit, set car by car. Car hire in Spain with no deposit is offered on some Alicante Airport cars further down the coast.

Travelling without a credit card at all? Most Barcelona cars do not ask for one, and other cars in Spain that need no credit card are worth comparing.

Motorways and tolls around Catalonia

You pay any tolls, parking charges and fines during the rental. Hire cars may only use paved public roads, so leave forest tracks and dirt roads alone.

  • The coast road south to Sitges follows the C-31 and C-32, and Montserrat is reached on the C-16. Check before you set off whether your route charges a toll.
  • Girona and Figueres lie north on the AP-7. Keep any toll and parking receipts until the deposit is back.
  • A fine that arrives after the car is returned is still yours to pay, so park only where the signs allow it.

Spanish road rules worth knowing

Spain drives on the right. City driving in Barcelona brings a few rules that may differ from home.

Reserved lanes

Bus, taxi and cycle lanes are marked for those vehicles only. Driving in one with a hire car can lead to a fine, even for a short stretch.

Lane signals

A red X above a lane means that lane is closed. A flashing amber light means slow right down, take care and give way.

Roundabouts

Take the exit from the right-hand outer lane unless an arrow allows another. Missed it? Do another lap rather than cut across.

Town speeds

Shared streets are 20 km/h, roads with one lane each way 30 and roads with two or more lanes 50, unless signs show another limit.

Call 112 in an emergency. Spanish law requires a connected V-16 light in place of warning triangles, plus a reflective vest; check both are in the car before leaving the pickup point.

Can you drop the car off in another city?

Some Barcelona cars can be returned in Valencia, Madrid or Malaga. Pick the return city when you search; the one-way charge is part of the price you see.

Valencia

Valencia returns can be at the airport, a city office or a delivery address, depending on the car. Check which one your offer names.

Madrid

Madrid returns are at Barajas Airport, Atocha station or an address. Choose the one that suits your onward plans before you pay.

Malaga

Malaga returns end at the airport. Compare totals with the one-way charge included, as it differs from car to car.

Day trips from central Barcelona

From Plaça de Catalunya: Sitges, about 40 min for 39.3 km; Montserrat, about 1 h for 60.0 km; Tossa de Mar, about 1 h 30 min for 86.7 km; Tarragona, about 1 h 30 min for 94.9 km; Girona, about 1 h 30 min for 101.4 km; Figueres, about 1 h 45 min for 139.2 km.

These times run from Plaça de Catalunya on clear roads. Allow longer for traffic, stops and parking at the other end.

Further south, car rental in Valencia is more than four hours away by road, so that trip fits a one-way rental better than a day out.

Barcelona prices month by month

Each column is the going daily rate for a week’s rental that starts mid-month in Barcelona.

Seven-day rentals starting on the 15th, November 2026 to October 2027.

Summer bars rest on fewer cars than the winter ones, so check your own dates again nearer the trip.

Seats, child seats and a second driver

Seats range from four in a city car to nine in a van. Add child seats and any extra driver while booking, and check the price of each on the car.

Room for a group

Five-seat cars are the usual choice. For more people, compare seven-seat cars and nine-seat vans, and check the boot space with every seat in use.

Child seats

Baby seats, child seats and boosters are separate extras, each priced on the car. Pick the one that fits your child’s size, then check the fitting at pickup.

Second driver

A second driver is an extra on some cars, at no cost on certain offers. Check they meet that car’s age and licence conditions before you add them.

Automatic gearbox

Automatic cars are offered at the airport, the city office and on delivery. Filter by gearbox first if you only drive an automatic.

Car hire excess and cover in Barcelona

Each car lists its own cover levels, and a higher level can lower the excess or the deposit. Compare both on the car you choose.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

What standard cover leaves out. Damage to the wheels, the underside, the windscreen and the inside of the car is not covered by standard insurance.

After an accident. Tell the rental company at once and get a police report, unless the company agrees otherwise. Skipping either step can cancel the cover.

When cover does not apply. Deliberate damage, vandalism and neglect make the insurance invalid, whatever level you picked.

Excess and deposit. The car hire excess is your share of a damage bill; the deposit is the sum held on the day to secure it.

What documents does the driver need?

Bring your original national licence, valid until the end of the rental and with details in Latin script. Copies and digital licences are not accepted.

International permit

If your licence is valid only in the country that issued it, carry an International Driving Permit as well and show it when asked.

Age and experience

Minimum age and years of driving differ from car to car, even between similar models. Check them before paying, as the company can refuse the handover.

Fuel, cleaning and returning the car

Fill the tank back to where it was at pickup. If you need it for longer, tell the company in advance.

Fuel level

  • A lower level is charged at the company’s fuel rates. Returning more fuel than you collected earns no refund.

Condition at return

  • A car too dirty to inspect is washed at your cost. Small pets may ride only inside a travel carrier.

Taking the car into France or Andorra

Some Spanish cars carry an extra for entering France and Andorra. Tell the rental company before you go so it can prepare the papers.

Without that extra and the company’s agreement, plan to keep the car in Spain. Where a car offers the extra, its price shows before you book.

How do cancellations and changes work?

Check the deadline on your booking. Many cars include a cancellation option that lets you cancel up to 24 hours before pickup and get the advance back, less the payment fee.

Without the option

The deadline is a week before pickup, or 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles. After that, or after a no-show, the advance is kept.

Refunds and changes

Email support with your voucher to cancel; the refund arrives within 14 days, less a 6% payment fee. To change dates, cancel and book again.

Questions about car rental in Barcelona

Is there a minimum age to hire a car in Barcelona?

It depends on the car: the company sets the minimum age and how long you must have held a licence, and both show before you pay.

Do Barcelona hire cars have a mileage limit?

Many do: the office and delivered cars cap the kilometres per day, and so do some airport cars. The allowance shows on each car.

Can I collect the car late at night?

Not every car is offered for a night pickup, and some add a charge for it. Enter your real arrival time and the search shows what is available.

What if the booked car is not available?

If a breakdown or a similar event stops the company supplying it, it must give you a car of the same or a higher class, on the same terms and price.

Why does the rental company need my phone number?

Your phone, with its country code, has to work from the day before pickup to the return, for calls and messenger apps.
