These six cars use Tenerife South for pickup and return, with no airport service fee. Other cars may charge one, so compare full prices and deposits.

Match the gearbox and passenger capacity

Which Tenerife airport is on your booking?

Tenerife South and Tenerife North are separate airports. The deals and prices here use Tenerife South; if you land in the north, search Tenerife North directly.

Tenerife South pickup

Your voucher gives the meeting point at the airport and the company’s phone number.

Tenerife North pickup

Landing in the north? Search Tenerife North directly; a southern booking does not move there.

Night pickup

Tenerife South closes to the public overnight when no flights run. Confirm a night pickup with the company.

At Tenerife South Airport the terminal closes to the public from 23:00 to 04:00 when no flights run, except for staff and departing passengers. Check the company’s night instructions before a late pickup.

Give a booking phone with the international code and keep it on from the day before pickup until return. If your flight changes, agree new arrangements.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Tenerife?

Some cars take debit and some hold no deposit, but these are separate rules. Check your car’s deposit, accepted card, balance payment and deposit release.

For a credit card booking, bring the main driver’s embossed physical card. Debit works only if accepted, embossed and shown in person; cash depends on the offer. The 15 to 20% advance goes towards the rent, not the deposit.

Pickup and return can each carry a charge, already included in the quoted total for your airports and times. Car rental in Spain with no deposit is offered at both Tenerife airports, but not on address delivery from Tenerife South.

How long are drives from Tenerife South?

Times start at Tenerife South Airport on clear roads. Add time for delays, stops and parking, and check mountain road notices first.

Teide times run to the cable-car base and Santa Cruz to Plaza de España. Resort times are to the town, not your hotel. Check mountain access and parking separately.

Teide access and permitted roads

Snow and ice can close the roads up Teide, and access may be limited after snowfall. Check the latest notice, even when the coast is warm.

  • The TF-21 and TF-24 have closed for ice, and other routes up can be restricted too. Follow current signs and do not try another mountain road without checking it.
  • Driving on Tenerife’s forest tracks is generally banned. Your rental only allows paved public roads, even in an SUV and even where a track is open locally.
  • Allow extra time when traffic is limited or diverted. The time to the cable-car base excludes queues, parking and weather.
  • Check legal access and parking at your accommodation. You pay for parking, fines and road charges, and the rental gives no access to restricted streets.

Road rules beyond the southern resorts

Keep right and follow the posted limits. Set your route before driving, and save the company’s number as well as 112.

Speeds depend on layout

Motorways are normally 120 km/h and ordinary roads 90. In towns: 20 on shared streets, 30 with one lane each way, 50 with more lanes. Signs can change these.

Use the outside exit

Leave a roundabout from the outer right-hand lane unless markings allow otherwise. Go round again if needed rather than cutting across from an inner lane.

Check connected warning kit

Find the reflective vest and connected V-16 beacon before leaving. Spanish-registered cars need the beacon from 2026 instead of triangles. It marks the car but does not call for help.

Keep phones and alcohol out

Do not hold a phone or wear earpieces while driving. Alcohol limits are 0.5 g/l in blood and 0.25 mg/l in breath, lower in your first two licence years.

Wear seat belts. Children 135 centimetres or shorter need suitable seats, normally in the back. Call 112 in an emergency. After a breakdown, get out only into a safe place away from traffic; otherwise stay inside, belted.

Book a different Tenerife return place

Some cars go from the south airport to the north one or back, or finish with a Puerto de la Cruz drop-off. Choose the return before booking.

North airport finish

Choose a Tenerife North return and leave time for the car check before your flight.

South airport finish

On a north to south hire, confirm the pickup and return arrangements at both airports.

Puerto de la Cruz

Agree the town address; hotel or unattended returns need approval first.

The drive between the two airports is 70.3 kilometres, about an hour without delays. Either end can carry a charge, so compare the full price even when a fee shows zero.

Tenerife South prices month by month

Each month shows a seven-day search at Tenerife South. N/A means no cars were quoted; your own dates and needs decide what you can book.

Tenerife South for pickup and return; N/A means no quote that month.

Each extra part-day adds another day’s charge. Compare the length of hire and the car’s kilometre allowance together.

Passengers, equipment and driver approval

Choose seats, luggage space and child seats for everyone. A second person may drive only once added to the booking as an extra driver.

Four or five seats

Small cars seat four or five. Check the seat count and boot space together before assuming everyone fits.

Child equipment

Order a suitable child seat in advance. Check its condition and fitting at pickup before your first drive.

Larger capacity

Some cars have up to nine seats. Check availability for your dates and luggage space with the layout you choose.

Additional drivers

Have every driver added and approved. A licensed passenger cannot just take the wheel without meeting this car’s conditions.

Read the available protection levels

Tenerife cars may have fewer cover levels than the general guide shows. Use the options on your car and compare excess, deposit and exclusions.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

What is offered: Full Coverage Plus is not listed on Tenerife cars. Choose from your car’s own options.

Not covered: Cover excludes the underbody, interior, wheels and windscreen. Check what an upgrade adds.

Reporting: Tell the company straight away after any insured incident. Get a police report too unless agreed otherwise, or the cover is void.

What voids cover: Neglect or deliberate vandalism voids the insurance. Higher cover does not allow unpaved or closed roads.

What should the driver carry?

Bring your original national licence in Latin script, valid for the whole rental; no copies or digital versions. Any required card must name the main driver.

Licence and permit

An international permit is strongly advised if your licence is valid only at home. Bring ID too, and check the document rules before your pickup.

Age and licence history

Check each driver’s age and years licensed against your car before paying. Qualifying for another model does not mean you qualify for this one.

Drivers with non-EU or non-EEA licences should bring ID and an IDP. UK photocard rules differ; check the official rule for your licence and the company’s requirements.

Agree fuel and the final handback

Confirm the return place and time with the company. A late flight does not extend your rental, so arrange extra time beforehand.

Restore the initial level

  • Return the fuel level recorded at pickup. Shortfalls are charged at the company’s prices, and extra fuel is not refunded.

Allow a visible inspection

  • Return the car clean enough to check. If dirt gets in the way you pay for washing; finish the check with staff before leaving.

Keep small pets in carriers. Keep your booking phone on until return, and agree any extension with the company in advance.

Ask before taking the car between islands

Not every Canary Islands rental car may go on a ferry. Ask the company before booking so it can confirm your car and crossing.

A Gran Canaria return does not tell you if this car can cross, who moves it or whether you may travel with it. Check before booking a ferry. For trips outside Spain, tell the company first so it can prepare the papers.

How can you change or cancel the booking?

To change the car or dates, cancel and book again within your car’s deadline. Agree any extra time with the company before it starts.

Give enough notice

Cancel ordinary cars 7 days ahead, or 30 days for convertibles and luxury cars; 24 hours with the cancellation option. Late requests and unagreed no-shows lose the advance.

Provide the voucher

Email support with your voucher to cancel. Eligible refunds are paid within 14 days, minus 6% of the advance for payment costs.

Tenerife airport and island questions

Can a Tenerife South booking be collected at Tenerife North?

Only if the booking is changed and agreed. The two airports are separate pickup places, and car hire at Tenerife North Airport is quoted on its own, even when the same models appear at both.

Can I pick up a hire car at Tenerife South at night?

Only if your company confirms it. The terminal closes to the public from 23:00 to 04:00 when no flights run, so search your real times and follow the confirmed instructions.

Can a rental SUV use forest tracks?

No. The rental allows paved public roads only, whatever the car and whatever any local track permit says.

Can I take a Tenerife hire car on the ferry to Gran Canaria?

Only with the company’s approval for that car. Ask how it would be moved before you book a crossing. Some Tenerife South bookings offer a return at Gran Canaria Airport, where car rental in Gran Canaria is collected.

Are Teide roads always open when the coast is warm?

No. Snow or ice on the mountain can restrict or close the roads. Check the current road notices before you go.
