Car hire at Barcelona Airport

Local rental companies hand over cars at El Prat, each listing its deposit, card rule and kilometre cap. Any airport handover charge is already in the total.

Barcelona Airport car hire deals

Each of these six includes Basic cover with no excess, a €350 deposit and 1,225 km for the week, with pickup and return at El Prat.

Which vehicle fits the trip?

Class prices are typical daily figures from the deals’ search week. Premium cars and convertibles run to several times the economy rate at El Prat.

Gearbox and seat filters are worth setting first, as automatics and seven-seaters both appear. Across Spain the cars come from independent local firms.

Where do you collect a hire car at El Prat?

El Prat has two terminals, T1 and T2, and your voucher gives the firm’s meeting point and phone number.

Meeting point

Skip the rental desks in the arrivals hall and go where your voucher says. Call the firm if your flight lands at the other terminal.

Night landings

After dark the list shrinks and some firms add a fee, which is why the search needs your real landing time.

Handover charge

Part of the El Prat fleet carries an airport handover fee. It sits inside the price shown, so line up totals, not day rates.

Staying in town first? The search for car rental in Barcelona adds a city rental office and delivery to an address, and Plaça de Catalunya is about 25 minutes from the airport.

Barcelona Airport guide: services and parking

Practical information for an arrival or departure through Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Collecting and returning your car

  1. Meeting point Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number. Save both before you fly.
  2. Delays If your flight runs late, ring the company on the voucher number.
  3. Check the car Walk round the car with the company and note any damage before you drive off.
Stay reachable Keep the booking phone reachable from the day before pickup to the end of the rental, with its international prefix.

Driving away from the airport

  1. Lane signals A red X above a lane closes it; a flashing amber light means extreme caution.
  2. Roadside checks Police regularly run alcohol and drug checks at the roadside.
  3. A refuelling stop The T2 petrol station, floor 0, sells petrol, diesel and LPG; current hours are 6:00 to 22:00.
Speed limits Outside towns the limit is 90 km/h and on motorways 120, unless signs set a lower figure.

Do you need a credit card to hire a car at Barcelona Airport?

Only on some cars. The car page states whether a credit card is needed and how the deposit is taken.

No credit cardOn many cars
€100 to €3,500Deposit, set per car
15 to 20%Online, to confirm

Where a credit card is required it must be a real, embossed card in the lead driver’s name. Debit cards work only on cars that say so, the same rule as for all cars in Spain that need no credit card.

Every El Prat car holds some deposit. Alicante and Malaga airports are where car rental in Spain with no deposit turns up.

What to know on Spanish roads

Lanes and direction

Traffic keeps to the right. Lanes marked for buses, taxis or bikes are off limits to a hire car, even briefly.

Leaving roundabouts

Use the outer right-hand lane to leave a roundabout unless signs say otherwise; go around again if you cannot reach it safely.

Breakdown equipment

A Spanish-registered car must carry a connected V-16 light and a reflective vest. Ask where both are at pickup.

After an accident

Call the company at once and get a police report unless it agrees otherwise, or the cover can be cancelled.

Leaving Barcelona Airport for your accommodation

Choose the street entrance to your accommodation before setting off. If you are staying in the city, ask your host where you can park and unload.

From the airport: Barcelona, about 25 min; Sitges, about 35 min; Montserrat, about 1 h; Tarragona, about 1 h 15 min; Girona, about 1 h 45 min.

These estimates allow for free-flowing traffic with no stops, and the city figure ends at Plaça de Catalunya. Some routes use motorways, so check whether a stretch charges a toll.

Using your phone

Prepare navigation while parked. Keeping a phone in your hand while driving is prohibited, including when using it to find the next turn.

Driving abroad

Planning to continue into France or Andorra? Discuss the journey with the rental company in advance and arrange the required documents.

Can you return your Barcelona Airport car elsewhere?

Flying out of a different airport? Search with that return location from the start so you can compare suitable offers.

Choose both places

Put the airport in as pickup and your final stop as the return. Only book a pairing the search actually lists.

Check the total

Check the new total after changing the return location. Any location charge needs to be included in your comparison.

Confirm the return

Get clear directions for the return point. Allow time for the company to check the car before you leave.

Flying home from Girona instead? Car hire at Girona Airport is a separate search, and its cars are delivered in Girona city rather than handed over at the terminal.

Choosing your travel month

The chart compares a week’s hire in each month. It can help you choose when to travel, but the cars and prices for your own dates may differ.

Planning for everyone on board

Extra drivers

Adding another driver? Check their licence experience and age against the car’s conditions before putting them on the booking.

Child seats

Ask for child seats when you reserve, then confirm the requested equipment with the company before arrival.

Bags and seats

Check how many cases fit behind the seats you will use. Leave space for a pushchair if you are bringing one.

Travelling pets

Small pets must travel inside their carriers. Plan the luggage space so the carrier fits alongside your bags.

What cover comes with Barcelona Airport hire cars?

On the six deals it is the same; on other cars, read the levels before paying.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Basic cover, no excess. The Toyota Aygo, Fiat 500, SEAT Ibiza and the other three deals list CDW with nothing owed for damage and €350 held.

Gaps in any cover. Tyres and wheels, the underbody, the windscreen and the cabin are outside standard insurance.

Lost cover. Careless or deliberate damage cancels the insurance, whichever level you bought.

Bigger deposits. Some El Prat cars hold up to €3,500; a higher cover level can cut both that and the excess.

Licence and age rules for Barcelona cars

Bring the original licence, valid until the car goes back, with its details also in Latin script. Photocopies and phone versions are refused.

International permit

If your licence only counts in its home country, an International Driving Permit should travel with it.

Minimum age

Each car names a minimum age and years held, which can differ even between two similar models.

Fuel and cleaning before your flight home

Fill up to the level shown at pickup before the drive back to the terminal.

Fuel gauge

  • Short of the pickup level means paying the firm’s fuel rate; extra is not credited.

Inspection

  • Return it clean enough to inspect, or pay for a wash.

How do you cancel a Barcelona Airport booking?

By email to support. Cars with the 24-hour cancellation option can be cancelled until the day before pickup.

Standard notice

Without the 24-hour option you need a week’s notice, or 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles; after that the advance is kept.

Refund timing

The advance returns within 14 days, minus 6% for payment costs. New dates count as a new booking.

Barcelona Airport car rental questions

Will I collect my car at T1 or T2?

The voucher says where the company meets you. If your flight moves to the other terminal, call the company before you leave arrivals.

Can I use a debit card for car hire at Barcelona Airport?

Is there a deposit on Barcelona Airport car hire?

Yes, every car here holds one, from €100 to €3,500 depending on model and cover; the amount appears before you pay.

Can I collect the car late at night?

Some firms do night handovers and some charge for them. Put your actual landing time in the search to see who does.

Is there a daily kilometre limit?
