Car hire in Mallorca

Compare local rental firms at Palma Airport (PMI), with office pickup and address delivery too, the deposit beside each car and insurance choices before you book.

Compare vehicle prices and security holds

A low price can come with a large deposit held on your card. Compare both, then check your dates, card and cover before booking.

Choose capacity rather than the photo alone

Prices far under the usual rate come with a credit card rule and a deposit from €1,400. Half of all cars cost over €25 a day.

Five of the six examples seat five, and one is an automatic. Check space for bags.

Some cars guarantee the model; others may be a similar one. These class and month prices use Palma Airport for pickup and return, not office or delivery offers.

Where is your meeting at Palma Airport?

A local company hands over the car at Palma Airport. Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Airport pickup

Follow the meeting directions on your voucher, not the airport’s list of rental firms.

Delivery or office

Delivery and office pickup are separate offers, each with its own price, deposit and card rule.

Flight changes

Keep your phone on. If your flight time changes, ask the company to confirm a new meeting.

At pickup, note the fuel and condition and check any extras. If your office is not at the airport, get its address from the company; the label alone does not say whether it is at the airport or in central Palma.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Mallorca?

Card rules vary in Mallorca. Some airport cars need a credit card, so check the deposit and payment rules on the car you book.

Bring the main driver’s required card in person, with embossed details. Debit needs express permission; check the deposit, balance and deposit release separately. Some Palma cars without a credit card start at an office; address delivery needs one.

You pay 15 to 20% of the rent to book and the balance to the company. Any deposit is separate.

How far are the main towns of Mallorca by car?

Palma times run to the cathedral and the others to the town centre. Add the drive to your hotel, and get any permit needed for restricted zones.

Palma access and Formentor restrictions

Palma has an enforced low-emission zone. Check your car qualifies under the current rules before driving in; the model name alone does not tell you.

  • Foreign-registered cars must register with Palma in advance, within the required notice. Do not assume your car is Spanish-registered or that the booking registers the plate.
  • Formentor limits are seasonal. In 2026 they ran from 15 May to 18 October, 10:00 to 22:00; check the dates for your own visit.
  • During those dates, private cars can use the beach car park only while spaces remain. Past the later barrier towards the lighthouse, only authorised vehicles go through.
  • Stay on paved public roads and follow closures. Reaching Pollença does not give you access to the Formentor road or a space at the beach car park.

Ask your accommodation about legal access and parking. You pay for parking, road charges and fines.

Road rules before exploring the island

Drive on the right and follow the signed limits. Mountain and coast roads can be slower, so clear-road times are not guaranteed.

Understand local speed signs

Ordinary roads are 90 km/h and motorways 120. Town streets are 20, 30 or 50, depending on shared surfaces and lanes; posted limits come first.

Leave the outer lane

Leave a roundabout from the outer right-hand lane unless markings say otherwise. Go round again if needed, rather than cutting across moving traffic.

Check breakdown equipment

From 2026, Spanish-registered cars carry a connected V-16 light instead of triangles. Find it and the reflective vest. It warns others but does not call for help.

Protect every passenger

Do not use phones or earpieces while driving. Use seat belts and suitable child seats for anyone 135 centimetres or shorter, normally in the back. Check the seats at pickup.

Alcohol limits are 0.25 mg/l in breath and 0.5 g/l in blood, lower in your first two licence years. For emergencies call 112. After a breakdown with no safe place to wait, stay inside, belted.

Arrange an Alcúdia finish explicitly

Some Palma cars can be returned at Alcúdia Seaport. Choose that return and your times before booking; a Palma Airport round trip cannot be changed later.

Choose the return

Choose Alcúdia Seaport and confirm where the company will meet you.

Read the total

Compare the full trip price, not just a separate fee line.

Confirm island changes

For an Ibiza return, ask exactly how the car gets between the islands.

Get the company’s answer before buying a ferry crossing for the car, or book a separate car rental in Ibiza for that part of the trip.

How hire prices change through the year

Each month shows the typical day rate for a week’s hire at Palma Airport. Your dates and extras set the final price.

Palma Airport prices for a week’s hire.

Each extra part-day adds another day’s charge. Price your real dates and the features you need.

Passengers and equipment for the stay

Check seats, bags and extras together. A larger car must be available for your dates, with room for bags when every seat is filled.

Passenger numbers

The examples have four or five seats. Check the exact number before choosing a small car for your group.

Younger travellers

Ask for the right child seat before you arrive. Check the seat and how it is fitted before your first drive.

Larger parties

Larger Mallorca cars have seven seats, and eight- and nine-seat models are also available. Check luggage space with everyone aboard.

Shared driving

Add any extra driver through the car’s option and check they qualify. Holding a licence alone does not let a companion drive.

Compare the hold and accident contribution

Check the cover on the car you choose. A smaller deposit does not mean a lower accident excess or wider cover.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Your cover: Cover options and their effect vary by car. Check the excess and deposit after choosing.

Not covered: Standard insurance excludes the interior, wheels, windscreen and underbody. An upgrade must say clearly if it adds more.

After an incident: Tell the company straight away. Get a police report unless it agrees otherwise; skipping this voids the insurance.

What voids cover: Deliberate vandalism and neglect each void cover. Road and use rules still apply after an upgrade.

Which documents should the driver prepare?

Bring your original national licence with Latin-script details, valid until return; no copies or digital versions. Any required card must name the main driver.

Licence and IDP

An international permit is strongly recommended if your licence is valid only at home. Bring ID and check the rules for your licence before flying.

Age and experience

Minimum age and years licensed vary by car. Check every driver qualifies before booking, or the company can refuse the handover.

Drivers with non-EU or non-EEA licences need ID with an IDP. UK photocard rules differ; check the official and company requirements before you travel.

Prepare the final inspection and fuel

Confirm the return place and time with the company. Leave time to unload and have the car checked before your flight.

Match the starting reading

  • Return the fuel level you started with. Shortfalls are charged at the company’s rates, and extra fuel is not refunded.

Leave the car inspectable

  • If dirt stops the return check, you pay for washing. Check the car before the final handover.

Ask the company before extending the rental. Only small pets in carriers may travel, for the whole trip. Keep your booking phone on until return.

Ferry travel requires a supplier answer

The Spain terms do not cover Balearic ferries. Ask the company before taking the car on one; a ferry ticket is not permission.

Before driving outside Spain, tell the company so it can prepare the papers. This does not cover every country or travel between Spanish islands. For Portugal, check mainland car hire in Spain, where some cars list a Portugal fee.

How are cancellations and changes handled?

Check your deadline before changing flights or cars. For new dates or a different car, cancel and rebook; agree any extension with the company.

Give enough notice

Cancel standard cars 7 days before pickup, or 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles; 24 hours with the cancellation option. Late notice or an unagreed no-show loses the advance.

Send the booking voucher

Email support with your voucher to cancel. Eligible refunds arrive within 14 days of your request, minus 6% for processing.

Mallorca airport hire questions

Can a cheap Palma Airport car still require a large deposit?

Yes. Rent and deposit are separate amounts, so check the deposit and the card it needs even when the price is low. Palma Airport also has zero-deposit Palma cars.

Can I collect from a rental office in Palma instead of the airport?

Yes, some cars start at an office. Ask the company for its address, as the office label does not say whether it is at Palma Airport or in central Palma.

Can an ordinary hire car continue to Formentor lighthouse?

Not automatically. During the controlled period, only authorised vehicles pass the later barrier. Check the current road notice and get any permission needed.

Can I take a Mallorca hire car to Menorca or Ibiza?

Only with the company’s approval for that car, as the Spain terms do not cover Balearic ferries. A separate car rental in Menorca avoids the question.

Do you need a credit card for delivery to your address in Mallorca?

Yes. Palma address delivery needs a credit card, while some airport and office cars do not. Check the card rule shown on each car.
