Car hire in Port Louis

Have a car dropped at your Port Louis address, free on some models. Most skip the deposit, none asks for a credit card, and insurance comes up before booking.

Port Louis car rental deals with delivery

Delivery costs nothing extra on these six cars. Check seats, gearbox and deposit, then enter your dates to see the full price for each.

Compare sizes before choosing a city rental

How does collection in the capital work?

In Port Louis the car comes to your address. Give the company a clear meeting point and time, rather than looking for a walk-in branch.

Delivered to you

Give your full address and an easy meeting spot. Share entrance details so the handover happens where your booking says.

Your phone number

Give a number that works on your trip, with country code, and tell the company if your arrival changes.

Airport pickup

Need the car on landing? Book pickup at Mauritius Airport (MRU), follow its meeting instructions, then drive into the capital.

If city delivery is later in your stay, arrange your own transfer. Your booking phone must work from the day before pickup. When the car arrives, check its condition, fuel, equipment, drivers and return details, and follow your voucher.

Plan the hire payment and held security

The rent you pay and the deposit held are two things. Deposits vary between Port Louis cars, even similar automatics with the same seats.

Half the cars shown need no deposit and half hold one. Check cover on its own: a car without a deposit can still leave you paying for damage.

Book with 15 to 20% paid online, then pay the rest to the company when the car arrives. That advance is not your deposit. No Port Louis car asks for a credit card, so it suits car rental without a credit card.

The rent and the deposit may need different payment methods. For a required credit card, bring the main driver’s physical embossed card; debit must be clearly approved, on the same named-card terms.

Which journey times apply to Port Louis?

From the airport to Port Louis, ending at Place d’Armes, takes about forty minutes. All the other cards start at the airport too.

The airport route to Place d’Armes is 47.1 km, mostly on the M1. Your hotel may be further on, so allow for the last stretch.

Grand Baie to Place d’Armes is about 25.5 km and twenty-five minutes, mainly on the M2. That is a separate drive from the north, where Grand Baie also has delivery to your address.

Times exclude stops and traffic. Allow time to meet the company and check the car, and leave room for the return check before a flight.

Parking plans for a stay in Port Louis

Check parking where you are staying before the car arrives. Renting does not give you a space at the address or anywhere you visit.

  • Ask your hotel or venue where the car can stay once the company leaves, and how to reach that space. Delivery there does not mean you can park there.
  • Read the signs and payment rules where you park. Port Louis has no single tariff, timetable or way to pay for every place.
  • You pay for fuel, parking and fines yourself, separate from the rental price and any deposit.

The airport’s public car park is not where you return the car, unless the company tells you so. You can pay there by cash or card, then have fifteen minutes to leave.

Your sat nav may suggest tracks or private land; stay on paved public roads, whatever size of car you drive.

What should drivers know in the capital?

Drive on the left and give way on roundabouts to traffic from the right. Allow time to read signs and find your hotel entrance.

Read the road’s speed limit

Cars may go up to 110 km/h on motorways, 80 on A roads and 60 on B roads. Other roads are lower, and signs override these.

Avoid calls while driving

Phones are off limits at the wheel, hands-free included. Call or text before you go or once safely parked, including about your handover.

Allow for vulnerable travellers

You may meet people walking or cycling on motorways and local roads, by day or night, and slow motorbikes without lights.

Know the emergency contacts

Police: 999 or 112. Ambulance: 114. Fire: 115. Keep the rental company’s number handy to report any problem with the car.

Port Louis tourist police are at Line Barracks. After an incident you must still phone the rental company at once and obtain a police report, unless it agrees otherwise.

Check the weather before you drive. No driving in floods or once a cyclone hits category three or more; damage then is not covered. A Class III warning is a separate scale, not cyclone category three.

Airport pickup with a Port Louis return

Some bookings can begin at the airport and finish in the capital. Search that exact trip before paying; delivery at both ends is priced differently.

Confirm the Port Louis return address, meeting place and access.

Compare the actual endpoints

Search airport to city as its own trip; delivery uses another handover.

The company must agree any change of address or time. Search Port Louis to the airport as its own trip; the reverse may differ in price and cars.

Typical Port Louis daily prices by month

Each bar is a week’s rental from the 15th of the month. Compare timing, then price your car with your address and hours.

Months marked N/A had no price available.

A month’s figure is not a promise for every week in it. Length, cover and handover time all change the price, so keep them the same when comparing.

Cyclone season runs from November through May. Check forecasts before longer drives and be ready to change plans; the flood and cyclone driving ban applies in every month.

Seats, equipment and shared driving

Plan for your whole group before you book. Delivered cars come with five or seven seats, but luggage, child seats and named drivers matter too.

Check seats with cases

The Port Louis deals include two seven-seaters. Make sure the luggage still fits when every needed seat is taken, especially when moving hotels.

Select child restraints early

Add a suitable child seat from the car’s extras when you book. Check it and how it fits at delivery, before you set off.

Approve the additional driver

Add every extra driver to the booking before they drive. Their age and experience have to suit that car, even with a valid licence.

Keep essential requirements clear

Tell the company which seats or equipment are essential for you. If the offer allows a similar car, do not count on the one pictured.

Separate security from accident responsibility

A lower deposit does not always mean lower liability after damage. Check the cover options on your car and what still applies after an upgrade.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Compare both figures. The deposit and what you pay after an accident are different things. A Mauritius car rental with no deposit can still leave you liable, so read the cover terms.

Read the excluded parts. Interior, wheels, underbody and windscreen are excluded as standard. An upgrade adds only what it clearly states, whatever the package is called.

Perform the reporting duties. Phone the company as soon as anything happens. You need police paperwork unless another process is agreed; skipping it voids your cover.

Observe usage limits. Negligence and vandalism void insurance. No driving in flooding or when a cyclone reaches category three; damage then stays outside cover.

Choosing more cover can change the deposit. Your final quote shows the damage liability and the payment method.

Prepare your licence and driver details

Your national licence must be the original, in Latin script and valid for the whole rental. A photo, photocopy or electronic licence is not accepted.

Carry any accompanying IDP

For a licence valid only in its home country, an IDP is strongly recommended. Bring both originals and show the permit on request.

Match the vehicle criteria

Look at the car’s age and experience limits before booking. Similar models can differ, so a driver who falls short can be refused.

Bring the payment card set for your named driver with your licence. A required credit card, or debit where voucher and booking clearly accept it, must show the main driver’s name embossed on the physical card.

Finish the hire with the agreed checks

Allow time for the return check at your Port Louis address. Refuel and unload before the company arrives.

Match the collection fuel

  • Put back the fuel level recorded at delivery. A shortfall costs the company’s rate, and fuel above that level is not paid back.

Allow a clear inspection

  • Keep the car clean enough for its condition to be seen. If dirt hides it, you pay the wash charge.

Time your last drive to meet the agreed return. To keep the car longer, ask the company before that deadline; a later flight does not extend the rental.

The vehicle must remain in Mauritius

You cannot take the car out of Mauritius. Return it in the country before you travel on.

One-way rentals in Mauritius only move the return point within the island; they never allow a trip abroad.

Can you change or cancel the reservation?

Check your notice period before asking for another car or date. The short-notice option changes the deadline but not the other refund rules.

Observe the correct deadline

Without the short-notice option: seven days for ordinary cars, thirty for convertibles or luxury cars. With it: twenty-four hours. Late notice or an unagreed no-show loses the prepaid amount.

Send the voucher to support

Ask support to cancel and attach your voucher. Refunds are processed within fourteen days from the request, keeping a 6% fee on the advance.

For another car or new dates, cancel and make a fresh booking. To extend a rental that has started, tell the rental company in advance instead.

Port Louis booking questions

Does delivery include a reserved parking space?

No. Ask the property where the car can stay and check the rules for any space you use. Parking is paid by you, on top of the rental.

How is a short rental charged?

The shortest rental is twenty-four hours, so a few hours cost a full day, and part of another day adds one more. Enter exact pickup and return times for prices.

Can another person drive without being named?

No. Every extra driver must be approved on the rental first; holding a licence does not add them. Their age and experience must also meet that car’s limits.

Who handles questions about the supplied vehicle?

The rental company, using the contact in your confirmation, for the car, pickup and return. Keep that number with you. Cancellations and refunds go to booking support.

Are pets permitted on local journeys?

Only small pets, and they must stay in a carrier on every drive, even a short one around Port Louis.
