Car hire in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria Airport car hire from local companies, with some no-deposit cars and many that need no credit card. See the insurance levels before you book.

Airport cars with their own deposit figures

These airport cars show price and deposit together, some with no deposit. A zero deposit says nothing about card rules or damage liability.

Compare seats, gearbox and mileage

Most of these cars seat four and one seats five. All six are manual, so search for an automatic if you need one. You may get a similar model.

Some cars have a daily distance cap. Check it if you plan many coast and mountain drives, and check boot space with everyone aboard.

Where do you meet the company at Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)?

A local company hands over the car. Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Airport pickup

Read your company’s directions before leaving arrivals. They show where to meet and the number to call.

Night pickup

The terminal limits night access and night pickup depends on the company. Enter accurate times and confirm first.

Phone contact

Keep your booking phone, with country code, working through the hire. If your flight changes, agree a new pickup time.

At night the terminal closes to all but staff and passengers with a boarding pass, from two hours before departure. That says nothing about rental company hours.

Every car on this page is handed over at Gran Canaria Airport, not at an office in Las Palmas or the resorts.

Can you rent a car in Gran Canaria without a credit card?

Yes, on many cars, but a car marked no credit card can still need a debit card for the deposit or the rent. Check payment, deposit and release separately.

Some airport cars take debit or credit for the deposit but need a card for the balance. Cash will not do; the main driver must show their own embossed card.

You pay 15 to 20% online when you book. Car hire in Spain with no deposit can still have card rules, and you can still be liable for accident damage.

How far are the coast and inland villages?

Times start at Gran Canaria Airport on clear roads; add traffic, stops and parking. Inland drives take longer than coast drives of similar distance.

Las Palmas ends at Parque Santa Catalina. Tejeda is the village, not the Roque Nublo trailhead or summit.

Meloneras is 42.3 km from the airport, about 45 min. Add the drive up to your property, including for a return there.

Inland routes, dust and city access

Keep to paved public roads and check conditions before driving inland. Journey times do not allow for poor visibility, restrictions or finding legal parking.

  • Calima, Saharan dust in the air, can cut visibility. Follow current warnings; clear weather on the coast does not mean a clear drive inland.
  • Check the current Las Palmas access rules before entering any controlled area. National low-emission rules or old notices may not match today’s local rules.
  • Ask your accommodation about the legal route in and parking. A rental or room booking does not let you enter restricted streets or use private parking.
  • You pay parking, fines and road charges. Do not assume every road is toll-free just because it is not on a mainland toll list.

Road rules for an island itinerary

Drive on the right, follow posted limits and set your sat nav before moving. Keep the safety kit handy and the company’s number with you.

Limits change with the road

Follow posted limits: usually 120 km/h on motorways and 90 on other roads. In towns, 20 on shared streets, 30 on one lane each way, generally 50 with more lanes.

Use the correct roundabout exit

To exit, move safely to the outside right lane unless markings say otherwise. Go round again rather than cut across traffic; plan your lane early.

Inspect the warning equipment

At pickup, check for a connected V-16 light and a reflective vest. From 2026 the light replaces warning triangles on Spanish cars; it marks a stopped car but does not call help.

Keep the driver undistracted

Do not hold a phone or use earpieces while driving. Alcohol limits are 0.5 g/l in blood and 0.25 mg/l in breath; drivers licensed under two years have lower limits.

Wear seat belts. Children up to 135 cm need a suitable seat, normally in the back. Call 112 in an emergency.

If you stop, leave the car only for a safe place away from traffic; otherwise stay inside with your belt on.

An airport start and Meloneras return

Some cars can be picked up at the airport and returned in Meloneras. Get the exact return address and time from the company.

Choose the destination

Choose Meloneras as the return when you search; airport round trips do not include it.

Compare final totals

Compare the full one-way price, even when delivery is free.

Confirm the meeting

Get the exact address, time and handback steps from the company.

Meloneras is about 45 minutes by road from the airport, so allow for that when setting the return time. Any other return place, including another island, needs its own quote.

Monthly prices at Gran Canaria Airport

Each bar is a week-long hire at the airport in that month. Search your own dates for availability and price.

Each Gran Canaria Airport price is for a seven-day hire.

Any part of a day beyond your booked days costs another day. Include extras and distance limits when comparing prices.

Plan passenger capacity and equipment

Check seats, bags and child seats together before you choose. Add any second driver through the booking and check they meet the rules.

Compact-car capacity

Seat counts differ between these cars. Check seats and boot space before booking; the class name does not promise room for everyone.

Child equipment

Ask for the right child seat before you land. Check its condition and fitting with the company before your first drive.

Larger party choices

Some cars have nine seats. Check availability and luggage room with all the seats you need before planning around one car.

Shared driving

Name every driver on the booking and check they qualify. A passenger’s licence or sharing the cost does not let them drive.

Read protection and deposit as separate items

Compare the deposit, accident excess and exclusions on your car. A higher cover level or a no-deposit offer does not mean all damage is covered.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Your car’s menu: Compare the cover and costs on this car. A deposit cut on another car may not apply here.

Not covered: Standard cover excludes the windscreen, wheels, interior and underside. Check what an upgrade adds.

After an incident: Tell the company straight away and get a police report, unless it agrees otherwise. Skipping these steps cancels your insurance.

How you use the car: Neglect or deliberate damage cancels the policy. More cover does not widen the roads or uses the contract allows.

What documents are needed at handover?

Show your original national licence in Latin letters, valid until return; copies and digital versions are not accepted. Any deposit card must be the main driver’s.

Licence and supporting permit

If your licence is valid only in your own country, the rental terms strongly recommend an IDP. Have your ID and permit ready before you travel.

Check individual eligibility

Each car sets a minimum age and years of driving. Check your car before pickup; similar cars can differ, and not qualifying can stop the handover.

Drivers with a licence from outside the EU or EEA should carry an IDP plus ID. Rules for UK photocard licences differ, so check yours before you travel.

Return the fuel and inspectable vehicle

Agree the return place and time with the company. Leave time to unload, for the inspection and to reach your flight.

Match the pickup reading

  • Return the car with the fuel level you started with. Missing fuel is charged at the company’s rate, and extra fuel is not refunded.

Keep the condition visible

  • The company needs to see the car’s condition. If dirt prevents that, you pay for washing; let it finish the check.

Ask in advance for more time. Keep small pets in carriers on every drive, and keep your booking phone working until the car is back.

Confirm ferry approval for the actual vehicle

Not every Canary Islands car may go on an inter-island ferry. Ask the company about your car and trip before booking a crossing.

A ferry that takes cars is not rental permission. An island-return offer does not say who moves the car or whether you may board with it.

Tell the company in advance about any trip outside Spain so it can prepare the papers.

How are changes and cancellations processed?

Check the cancellation deadline before changing plans. For a new car or dates, cancel and book again; agree extensions directly with the company.

Allow the stated notice

Standard cars need 7 days’ notice, luxury cars and convertibles 30, or 24 hours with the cancellation option. Cancel late or miss pickup without agreement and you lose the advance.

Attach the reservation voucher

Email support with your voucher to cancel. Eligible refunds are paid within 14 days of your request, minus 6% of the advance for processing.

Gran Canaria car hire questions

Is there a daily kilometre limit on Gran Canaria hire cars?

On some cars. Others have no cap, so check the limit on your car before planning many coast and mountain drives.

How long is the drive to Tejeda and Roque Nublo?

About 1 h 30 min from the airport to the village of Tejeda on clear roads. Add time for parking near Roque Nublo and the walk up.

Can I return a Gran Canaria Airport car in Meloneras?

Yes, on cars that offer it. Choose Meloneras as the return when you search, then ask the company for the exact return point and time.

Can I take a Gran Canaria hire car on the ferry to Tenerife?

No. Get approval for your car before booking. A ferry timetable or a return offer from Tenerife is not permission.

Does no deposit remove accident liability?

No. Check the accident excess and exclusions separately from the deposit, even when the deposit is zero.
