Car rental at Heraklion Airport

Collect your car at Heraklion Airport (HER) from local rental firms, with night pickups on some cars. See each car’s deposit, card rules and cover before you book.

Cheap car rental with Heraklion Airport pickup

These cars are picked up and returned at Heraklion Airport, with daytime times in the price. Each needs a credit card and shows its own deposit.

Choose the vehicle before the first airport drive

These tile prices are the cheapest daily rate in each class, same week as the deals. The lowest prices all need a credit card and a deposit of at least €650, and half of all offers here cost more than €43 a day.

These size prices compare Heraklion Airport rentals. Check each car’s details for the gearbox, seats and boot space you need.

How does collection at Heraklion Airport work?

Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number, so follow it rather than any rental sign in the terminal.

Airport pickup

Choose Heraklion Airport if you need the car on landing. Town delivery and office pickup are separate bookings.

Meeting point

Go to the meeting point on your voucher and ring the company’s number there if you cannot find it.

Your confirmation

Keep your confirmation handy to call the right company. It gives the meeting point and their phone number.

Give a number with its country code that works from the day before pickup until the end of the hire. Heraklion town pickup means arranging your own transfer from the airport. Heraklion Airport, Chania Airport and a town address are different return places, so confirm yours.

Heraklion Airport guide: the essentials and the north-coast road

Key facts about Heraklion Airport, where to park in town, and what to expect on the road once you collect your hire car.

Before you land

  • Phone on? the company must be able to reach you from the day before pickup, so give your number with its country code.
  • Landing at night? some cars add an out-of-hours charge, so search with your real landing time.

Parking in Heraklion

  • PortThree controlled car parks

In town, the port authority runs three controlled car parks by Heraklion port.

  • Port parking charges a set amount for the first three hours, with a daily maximum.
  • Town streets mix resident, paid and loading bays, so read the signs.

Pickup and return

  1. Meeting point Your voucher gives it, with the company’s phone number.
  2. Early flight? Allow time for the car check before you head to Departures.
  3. Handing back Drive to the return place on your voucher, not a public car park.
Airport charges A few cars here carry an airport handover charge. It is part of the total you see, not an extra at pickup.

On the north-coast road

  1. Lane in the middle? On treated sections it is an overtaking lane that swaps direction.
  2. Bollards down the centre? They split the two directions on these sections.
  3. Storm while driving? Stop away from trees and pylons, hazards on, and stay in the car.
Water across the road? Some roads cross a stream bed with no bridge. Never drive through a flowing torrent; turn back and find another way.

Are deposit-free and no-credit options the same?

No, so check each one. The six featured Heraklion Airport cars need a credit card, but other airport offers are available.

Bring creditRequired on these featured cars
Check securityAmounts differ by vehicle
Check methodsRental balance and security separately
Read the voucherFollow the named-driver conditions

For a credit booking, the main driver brings their own physical embossed card. Debit works only where the offer says so, with the same card rules.

No credit card does not mean cash. Check how to pay the balance, how any deposit is held and when it comes back, as this differs between cars.

Pay fifteen to twenty percent online and the rest at pickup; any deposit is extra. Compare no-deposit cars or cars without a credit card, keeping Heraklion Airport selected.

How long are the drives from Heraklion Airport to the resorts?

These clear-road times start at the airport; pickup, traffic and stops are extra. Use your actual address for the final stretch.

Rethymno’s Fortezza is 83.6 kilometres from Heraklion Airport, around ninety minutes by road. Chania is 152.4 kilometres away, about 2 h 45 min in clear traffic.

The Heraklion time ends at Lions Square and the Knossos time at the archaeological site. Your hotel may be a different drive, so check the address. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda also have delivery.

Roadworks on the north coast can slow you down, so allow extra time. For day trips later, plan from where you are staying, not the airport.

Parking and the final handback

Get the exact return place and steps from the company before driving back to Heraklion Airport. Parking near the airport does not end the hire.

Follow the company’s return directions and leave time before your airline deadline.

Car park charges are separate from the rental and follow the car park’s own terms. Parking in town and at the port is a separate matter for car hire in Heraklion.

Return the car with the agreed fuel level; shortfalls are charged and extra fuel is not refunded. You pay for cleaning if dirt prevents inspection.

Can you collect or return during the night?

Some Heraklion Airport cars allow night pickups and returns, priced by car and time. Three featured compacts charge €40 each way at 01:00.

Both appointments affect the quotation

The same three cars have no time charge at 13:00. Enter your real pickup and return times when pricing, not midday as a placeholder.

Read the whole amount

An offer with no listed night fee can still cost more at a late hour. Compare the full total and check the company accepts the time.

Tell the company about delays

Tell the company if your flight is delayed; they will not wait indefinitely. Agree a new handover time if needed and keep their number to hand.

Time before an early flight

Before an early flight, allow time for the return and getting to Departures. Ask how keys and inspection work at that hour; never just leave the car.

These night examples are for the featured cars, not opening hours for the airport or every company. Search with your real times and follow the company’s meeting steps.

Can a Heraklion Airport rental end at Chania Airport?

Some cars go one way from Heraklion Airport to Chania Airport; others can end at a Rethymno address. Set the return place before comparing totals.

Heraklion Airport to the Chania Airport point is 160.7 km, about three hours in clear traffic, before handback and check-in. Other directions or town addresses differ. Get approval and a new price before changing the return place.

Heraklion Airport prices across the coming twelve months

Each bar is the lowest daily price for a week-long hire from mid-month, picked up and returned at Heraklion Airport, from November 2026 to October 2027.

Your chosen dates, hours and extras determine the final quotation.

These are the lowest daily prices for airport hires, not rates for every car. Search your real dates and times before choosing a car size.

Town office prices are for a different pickup. If a later Heraklion pickup suits you, compare the whole plan, including your airport transfer.

The minimum charge is one rental day. Going past a full twenty-four hours can add another day, even for a few hours; agree any extension with the company in advance.

Prepare passengers and equipment for collection

The featured cars offer child seats, and some also offer an extra driver. Check the equipment and driver options on your exact car before pickup.

Child restraints and luggage

Choose the child seat each child needs before pickup and ask how it is supplied. Check it fits before the first drive.

Sharing the driving

The rental agreement must list any extra driver before they drive. Check they meet the car’s minimum age and driving experience rules.

Travelling with a small pet

Only small pets may travel, in a carrier for the whole journey. Leave room for the carrier alongside passengers and luggage.

Space for the journey

Check boot space with child seats fitted and everyone aboard, so you know it all fits before you drive away.

How much protection does the selected tier provide?

Compare the deposit and what you would pay for damage on your exact car. An upgrade lowers one or both on some cars, not others.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Some upgrades cut both. On some cars, Basic holds €800 and leaves €800 to pay for damage; Full Coverage lowers the deposit to €250 and the damage charge to zero.

Some cars have no upgrade. Some featured cars hold €800 and leave €1,000 or €1,300 to pay for damage, with no Full Coverage option.

Some upgrades change nothing. On other cars, Full Coverage leaves both the deposit and the damage charge at €900 or €1,580.

Limits remain. Damage to the interior, windscreen, wheels and underside is excluded. Vandalism, neglect and banned use void the cover, and no upgrade allows a ferry.

Report any insured incident to the company at once and get a police report, unless they agree another way. Missing a step voids whichever cover level you chose.

Documents and the card to bring

Check the driver rules and bring originals valid until the last day of hire. Bring your national licence; an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.

Licence checks

The company can refuse the car without the right documents.

The original licence

Copies and electronic licences are not accepted; bring the original.

Pack the physical payment card with your licence, as the featured cars need a credit card.

Check each car’s rental requirements. Driver rules vary between similar models; there is no single minimum age at Heraklion Airport.

Driving and return responsibilities

Wear seat belts, use child seats and use your phone hands-free only. At pickup, check for a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and warning triangle.

Road responsibilities

  • You pay for fuel, parking, tolls and fines during the hire.

Return and rental conditions

  • Follow the fuel rules, keep to permitted roads and report any problem to the company.

Extra cover does not change the rental rules; you still need to follow the agreement.

Ferry travel and the roads you may use

Ask customer support about any ferry trip before you book. Permission must be agreed in advance, and the car cannot leave Greece.

Ferries sail from Heraklion port, but a sailing does not mean your hire car may board.

The port is about 4.3 km from the airport, around ten minutes on clear roads. Allow extra for pickup, finding the boarding area and ferry checks.

Keep to paved public roads; the gravel road towards Balos is off limits, even in an SUV. A one-way to another Cretan town is not permission to leave the island.

When the travel plan changes

With the cancellation option, cancel up to twenty-four hours ahead. Otherwise standard cars need seven days, and luxury cars and convertibles thirty days.

Cancellation request

Email support to cancel and attach your voucher. Refunds arrive within fourteen days, less six per cent.

Refunds and changes

A late change or cancellation, or missing pickup without notice, loses the advance. To change, cancel and rebook, so check the rules first if your flights move.

Heraklion Airport collection questions

Can I return a Heraklion Airport car at Chania Airport?

Yes, on some cars. Choose Chania Airport as the return place when you search; the one-way charge is already in each car’s total.

Does a late return have the same price as a daytime return?

Not always. The featured night examples charge for a 01:00 return, and the total can change with either time. Enter both times before comparing.

Does higher cover remove the whole deposit?

Not always. On some cars, Full Coverage lowers the deposit to €250 and removes the damage charge, but you still pay that deposit.

Does Kastelli change the pickup airport on my booking?

No. Use the airport named in your booking. The new airport at Kastelli is still under construction.

Can I leave an airport car at a Rethymno hotel?

Only if that return address is agreed for your car. Choose it when booking and confirm the meeting steps; driving there does not arrange a handback.
