Car rental in Chania

Car hire delivered to your Chania hotel or apartment from local companies, with free delivery, no-deposit and no-credit-card cars, and every car’s protection set out in advance.

Cheap car hire delivered in Chania

These cars have no delivery charge and each card shows its deposit. Other offers may charge for delivery, so compare full totals for your dates.

Choosing a model for your island plans

Can the car come to your Chania accommodation?

Yes, enter your Chania hotel, apartment or villa and agree a delivery time with the company. Pickup at Chania Airport is a separate choice.

Delivered to you

Give your Chania address and access details. Some cars deliver free; others add a charge to the total.

Airport pickup

Choose Chania Airport to pick up after landing. Price, deposit and meeting point can differ from town delivery.

Meeting point

Agree a clear meeting spot, and tell the company early if your arrival or accommodation changes.

Keep your booking phone, with its international code, reachable from the day before delivery until the hire ends. Souda Port pickup must be confirmed for your car, and it does not mean you can take the car on a ferry.

Does no deposit also mean no credit card?

No, check them separately. Some Chania cars have no deposit but still need a credit card, while others need neither.

No depositAvailable for town delivery
Credit conditionSeparate from the deposit amount
Rental balanceAccepted methods differ by car
Refund timingCheck when deposits are released

Some of the featured cars have no deposit and need no credit card. Other town cars have different rules, so check each offer, even when they deliver to the same place.

Pay an advance of 15% to 20% online when you book and the rest to the company at pickup; any deposit is extra. No credit card does not always mean cash is accepted, so check how to pay and when any deposit is returned.

If a credit card is required, the main driver must bring their own physical card with embossed details. Debit cards work only where the offer allows them, and the same rules apply. Filter for car hire in Crete without a credit card.

How far is Chania from the airports?

Drive times from Chania Airport to Chania town and farther across the island. Times are road only; allow extra for pickup, stops and traffic.

Chania Airport is the shorter drive for a town stay; pick up at Chania Airport if you want the car from landing. If your delivery starts later, plan the first transfer separately and set a realistic delivery time.

From Heraklion Airport, Chania is 152.4 km, about 2 h 45 min. Allow for that drive when you set a town handover or plan your arrival day.

Give the company your exact address and access details, and leave time to check the car and its equipment.

Where can you park during a Chania stay?

Choose between paid street parking, the covered KYDON car park and free outer Park and Ride sites. Check the signs at your space.

  • Street parking is charged from 07:00 to 21:00, Monday to Saturday, with a four-hour maximum stay. Sundays and public holidays are free on these spaces.
  • In the i-PARK CHANIA app, enter the plate in Latin letters without spaces and top up by credit or debit card. Kiosks and some shops also sell time.

The Chania i-PARK page lists prices and how to pay. Check the app accepts your rental plate before you leave the car. Parking fees and fines are yours to pay.

KYDON is the covered car park at Peridou 22. Check its Sunday opening before you rely on it.

Free Park and Ride car parks sit at Kladisos and beside Markopoulou park, in the former army camp.

Roadworks on the north-coast corridor

Drive the existing roads until a new section opens. The Chania bypass and other north-coast works are still being built, with no confirmed opening date.

New road and airport link

A new junction will link the new road with Chania Airport. Until it opens, use the existing airport road.

Existing-road improvements

The safety works between Chania and Kolymbari are finished. Where the road is wide enough there are alternating overtaking lanes and dividing bollards; it is not a new motorway.

Follow temporary controls

Follow the signs and lane layout on the day, including temporary controls at roadworks. Allow extra time when you have a fixed pickup, return or flight.

Permitted road surfaces

You may drive on paved public roads only, whatever the car. The road to Balos has an unpaved section, so do not drive the hire car there.

The new road between Chania and Heraklion is planned to have tolls once built; no tariff has been set yet.

Returning in Heraklion or Rethymno

Chania town rentals can end in Heraklion or Rethymno. Choose your drop-off before paying; any one-way charge is in that car’s total.

Ending at Heraklion Airport for a flight? Ask for an airport return and allow time for the drive, the car check and the airport. Driving through Rethymno or Heraklion does not mean you can return the car there; ask the company before changing your drop-off.

Chania town prices by month

Lowest daily prices for a week’s hire starting on day fifteen of each month, November 2026 to October 2027. Town delivery only, not airport pickup.

Check the delivery charge and full price for your dates.

Delivery charges can change the total a lot. The featured cars have no delivery fee, but other offers do, so compare the full price for your address.

For the example dates, airport prices are typically lower than town delivery. That is not true of every car, and airport pickup may add a trip you do not need.

You pay for at least one full day. A morning pickup and a return the next afternoon counts as two days. Ask the company before you extend your hire.

Child seats, luggage and shared driving

Some delivered cars offer child seats and a second driver. Book the seats you need and confirm every driver before the car arrives.

Passenger requirements

Ask for the booster or child seat each child needs and how it is fitted. Check luggage space with those seats in place.

Another driver

Any extra driver must be approved and named before they drive. They must meet the car’s age and licence rules; road limits stay the same.

Inspect child restraints

Check the child seats before you load up in Chania. Ask about anything unfamiliar, and report missing equipment before you set off.

Describe the whole party

Tell the company how many people and bags are travelling. Check the real boot space with the seats in use, not just the category label.

Car hire insurance for exploring western Crete

Cover varies by car. Check the level included, what you would still pay for damage and what is excluded before you book.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Top cover on some cars. Some delivered cars include Full Coverage Plus at no extra cost, with no deposit and nothing to pay for covered damage.

Other cars differ. Cover, deposit and price vary by car and company, so check what each quote includes.

What is not covered. Standard cover excludes the windscreen, wheels, underside and interior. Deliberate vandalism, neglect or driving on banned roads makes the insurance invalid, even with an upgrade.

If something happens. Tell the company straight away and get a police report, unless they agree otherwise. Skip this and you pay the full cost.

Cover included on one car may cost extra on another, so check your quote for deposits and damage costs.

Which licences and driver documents are needed?

Bring the original licence, valid for the whole hire; copies and digital licences are not accepted. Some companies refuse without the recommended International Driving Permit.

Vehicle eligibility

Before you book, check you meet the car’s age and licence rules.

Eligibility before collection

Similar cars can have different rules, and the company can refuse you if you do not meet them.

The Crete rental terms also explain the card rules and payment checks at pickup.

Driving responsibilities during the hire

Seat belts and child seats are required; phones must be hands-free. Cars must carry a first-aid kit, warning triangle and fire extinguisher.

Road responsibilities

  • You pay tolls, fuel, parking and fines. Keep to paved public roads, whatever the car.

Return and rental conditions

  • Return the same fuel level; shortfalls cost company rates. If the car is too dirty to inspect, you pay for cleaning.

Taking a car on a ferry from Souda

Taking the car on a ferry to the mainland or another island needs agreement first. Contact customer support before you book.

A ferry ticket, a port pickup or a one-way search does not mean you can take the car on a ferry. Tell support your full plan and get permission before you book.

Even with ferry approval, a car rented in Crete cannot leave Greece.

Cancellation before the delivery appointment

Standard bookings need a week’s notice to cancel, or thirty days for luxury cars and convertibles. With the cancellation option, it is twenty-four hours.

Cancellation request

Email your cancellation with the voucher attached. Refunds take up to fourteen days, and six percent of the advance is kept for payment processing.

Refunds and changes

You lose the advance if you change or cancel late, or miss pickup without telling the company. To change a booking, cancel it and book again.

The Crete rental terms set out the notice periods in full.

Questions about a Chania town rental

Are controlled street spaces free on Sundays?

Yes, paid street spaces are free on Sundays and public holidays. Check the signs at your space; private car parks and KYDON have their own rules.

Can I collect at Souda Port instead of my hotel?

Souda Port can be a handover point, but it must be confirmed for your car and time. A town delivery booking does not include it, and port pickup does not give ferry permission.

Does the app guarantee registration of a rental plate?

Not always. Enter the plate in Latin letters without spaces, then check it is accepted and your payment works before you leave the car. Some shops also sell parking time.

Is the new Chania bypass an available shortcut?

No. Do not plan on a new section until it opens; use the existing road for now.

Who handles a change to my delivery address?

Contact the rental company named in your booking and agree the new address before the delivery time. Give clear directions and keep your booking phone on.
