Car rental at Madrid Airport

Local firms at Barajas ask for no credit card on the cars listed here. Every car shows its deposit, its cover and any daily kilometre cap before you book.

Madrid Airport car rental deals

Seven-day totals for the cheapest Barajas cars. All six carry CDW with no excess, hold €350 and include 1,225 km for the week.

What will you carry?

Each class figure is a typical day rate for the week used for the deals. Premium rests on a single car, so read it as one example.

Automatics and seven-seaters are both easy to filter for at Barajas. As across Spain, each car is a local firm’s.

Where do you pick up a hire car at Barajas?

Madrid’s terminals are T1, T2-T3 and T4; the voucher gives the firm’s meeting point and phone number.

Meeting point

Walk past the arrivals desks to the meeting spot on the voucher, and phone the firm if your terminal changes.

Late arrivals

Fewer cars are handed over at night, and some at a fee. Your real arrival time in the search shows which cars still qualify.

Handover charge

A handful of Barajas cars add an airport handover fee, already counted in the total you see.

The search for car rental in Madrid adds Atocha station and delivery to an address, and Plaza de Cibeles is about 25 minutes from the airport.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car at Madrid Airport?

No, not on the cars here. Each one still holds a deposit, with the payment methods shown on the car.

Paying without a credit card does not mean cash: the car page explains how the deposit and balance are taken, as for other cars in Spain that need no credit card.

All Barajas cars hold €100 to €1,500. For car rental in Spain with no deposit, look at Malaga or Alicante airports.

Getting comfortable in traffic

Traffic direction

Traffic drives on the right. Set your navigation before you leave the meeting point, not once you are moving.

Leaving roundabouts

Take roundabout exits from the outer lane unless signs say otherwise; circle again if you cannot move across safely.

Breakdown equipment

Check the car has a reflective vest and, if it is Spanish-registered, a connected V-16 light before you set off.

Incident reporting

After an accident, tell the company at once and get a police report, unless the company agrees otherwise.

Leaving Madrid Airport for your accommodation

Set the destination and parking entrance before joining traffic. On departure day, allow for unloading and walking to the terminal.

From the airport: Madrid, about 25 min; Alcalá de Henares, about 35 min; El Escorial monastery, about 1 h; Toledo, about 1 h 15 min; Segovia, about 1 h 30 min.

Figures assume no traffic and no breaks, ending at Plaza de Cibeles for the city. Routes from T4 can use the M-12, and the Segovia route runs on the AP-6 and AP-61; all three are toll roads.

Stick to paved public roads

Hire cars may only use paved public roads, including the last stretch to your accommodation or a car park.

Driving abroad

Agree any international journey with the company before leaving Spain. Discuss the required documents while choosing your rental.

Can you return your Madrid Airport car elsewhere?

The airport, Atocha station and delivery addresses are separate return places. Check which one your car offers before you plan the last day.

Choose both places

Enter the return place when you search. Only book a pickup and return pair that the search offers.

Check the total

Check the total again after choosing a different return. Collection and return charges can affect which offer costs less.

Confirm the return

Get the final meeting point from the company before departure day. Leave time to check the car together and unload.

How Madrid Airport prices change by month

For a flexible trip, compare the months before committing to flights. The chart uses the same length of hire each time.

N/A: no cars on offer yet for that month.

Sharing the journey

Extra drivers

Add anyone who will share the wheel to your booking. Their age and time licensed must meet the vehicle’s requirements.

Child seats

Choose the child equipment your family needs when booking, and get confirmation before you arrive to collect the car.

Bags and seats

Compare boot space for the bags you are bringing, with each passenger seat you need still available.

Travelling pets

Bring only small pets and keep them in their travel carriers. Include the carrier when working out luggage space.

Which cover comes with Madrid Airport hire cars?

The six cheapest share one set-up; other cars vary.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

CDW, nothing to pay. The Fiat 500, Aygo, SEAT Ibiza, Golf, T-Cross and Polo list Basic cover with no excess and €350 held.

Not included. Standard cover never pays for wheels, the underbody, windscreen or interior.

Voided. Vandalism, neglect or deliberate damage cancels cover at any level.

Higher deposits. Other cars hold up to €1,500, and a stronger cover level can bring both that and the excess down.

Licence and age checks at Barajas

Only an original national licence, valid until the rental ends and with Latin-script details, is accepted; no copies.

Licence valid at home only

Bring an International Driving Permit too and show it on request.

Minimum age

Firms set age and experience per car and can refuse a driver who falls short.

Fuel and cleaning before the return

Refill to the pickup level; the airport petrol stations are in the questions below.

Fuel

  • Any shortfall is charged at the firm’s rate, and extra fuel is not paid back.

Cleaning

  • If the car is too dirty to inspect, the firm washes it and bills you.

How do you cancel a Madrid Airport booking?

By email with the voucher. Cars carrying the 24-hour option can be cancelled until a day before pickup.

Otherwise

Standard cars need a week’s notice, luxury cars and convertibles 30 days; a no-show loses the advance.

Refunds

Expect the advance back within 14 days, less a 6% payment fee. New dates require a new booking.
