Car hire in Madrid

Car rental in Madrid from local companies: collect at Atocha station or the airport, or have the car delivered, with the deposit shown on every car.

Madrid car hire deals

Low prices with no handover charge, all six collected at the airport. Each card shows the deposit and whether a credit card is needed.

Classes and day rates in Madrid

Atocha, the airport or delivery?

Madrid cars are handed over at Barajas Airport, at Atocha railway station or at an address in the city. The voucher names the place and the company.

Barajas Airport

Airport cars are handed over by local companies at the point on your voucher. Barajas has several terminals, so check which one before you land.

Atocha station

Station pickups suit arrivals by train. The voucher tells you where to meet the company at Atocha and gives its phone number.

Delivery

The car is brought to your address, with any delivery charge already in the price. Give the full street address and a contact number.

Flying into Barajas? Most Madrid cars are offered as car hire at Madrid Airport, so you can drive away the day you land.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Madrid?

No Madrid car asks for a credit card, but each holds a deposit. The car page shows the amount and how the company takes it.

A card required for the deposit has to be the real plastic card, embossed, in the main driver’s name. Debit cards count only on cars that accept them.

Madrid deposits start low but none is zero; some Alicante Airport cars are offered as car rental in Spain with no deposit.

Madrid’s cars sit among the cars in Spain that need no credit card; the deposit method is listed on each.

Which roads out of Madrid charge a toll?

The Segovia and Ávila routes use the AP-6 with the AP-61 or the AP-51, all state toll motorways. You pay tolls, parking and fines.

  • Toledo is reached on the A-42, El Escorial on the A-6 and M-505, and Aranjuez on the A-4.
  • The R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5 and M-12 around Madrid are toll roads that stay free between midnight and 6 am.
  • Stay on paved public roads only; that is a condition of every rental.

Day trips from Puerta del Sol

From Puerta del Sol: El Escorial, about 50 min for 47.2 km; Aranjuez, about 50 min for 49.6 km; Toledo, about 1 h 15 min for 74.8 km; Segovia, about 1 h 30 min for 94.4 km; Ávila, about 1 h 30 min for 111.4 km; Cuenca, about 2 h 15 min for 168.5 km.

Times assume clear roads from the city centre, with no stops on the way.

Snow, lanes and speed limits

Snow chains become compulsory in heavy snow. Check the forecast before a winter day trip out of the city.

Winter equipment

If snow is forecast, ask the company whether the car has chains or winter tyres, and follow any signs that require them.

Lane closed

A red X over a lane closes it to traffic. Move across in good time and never drive on under the X.

Spare wheel and vest

Spanish rules list a spare wheel and tools, or an approved alternative, plus a reflective vest. Check both at pickup.

Open-road limits

The limit is 120 km/h on motorways and 90 on other roads outside towns, unless signs show something else.

For any emergency on the road, call 112.

One-way car hire from Madrid

Some Madrid cars can be booked one way to Seville, Barcelona, Valencia or Malaga. Pick the return place in the search; the one-way charge is in the price.

Seville

Seville returns are mostly at the airport, with an address in the city offered on a few cars.

Barcelona

Barcelona returns are at El Prat Airport or an address, depending on the car you pick.

Valencia or Malaga

Valencia returns can be at the airport, an office or an address; Malaga returns are at its airport. Charges vary by car.

Madrid prices by month

Bars show the typical day rate for a seven-day hire from the 15th of each month.

Rentals of a week from mid-month, November 2026 to October 2027. N/A: no cars on offer yet for that month.

Bigger cars and child seats

Madrid cars run from four seats to nine. Pick the size, child seats and extra drivers when you book.

Vans and seven-seaters

For groups, seven-seat cars and nine-seat vans are on offer. Look at the boot space as well as the seats.

Seats for children

Child seats and boosters are priced per car and added at booking. Choose them by the child’s size.

Extra driver

Add a second driver before pickup. Some cars charge for it, and the price shows on the car.

Gearbox

Automatics are offered at the airport and on delivery. Atocha cars are mostly manual, so filter if you need an automatic.

Cover levels for car rental in Madrid

Each car lists the cover levels you can buy and the excess under each. Higher cover can also bring the deposit down.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Not covered as standard. Wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior are left out of standard insurance.

Accident procedure. Call the company at once and get a police report unless it agrees otherwise; without these steps the insurance lapses and you pay.

Void cover. Vandalism, neglect or deliberate damage make the insurance invalid.

Choosing a level. Higher cover levels cost more per day but can cut the excess, so weigh the two on the same car.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

The rental terms strongly recommend one if your licence is valid only in the country that issued it. Always bring the original licence too.

The licence itself

It must be the original national licence, in Latin script and valid until the return date. Copies and digital licences are refused.

Age and experience

Each car states a minimum age and years of driving, which differ even between similar models. Drivers who fall short can be refused.

Fuel and returning on time

Bring the car back with the same fuel level. Agree any extension with the company in advance.

Fuel

  • Shortfalls cost the company’s fuel rate, and surplus fuel is not repaid.

On return

  • A car too dirty to inspect is cleaned at your cost, and pets must be small and in a carrier.

Leaving Spain with the car

Some Spanish cars offer fees for entering Portugal, France and Andorra. Tell the company in advance so it can prepare the documents.

Where a car lists the fee, the price shows before you book. Agree the route with the company first; without that, keep to Spain.

Can you cancel a Madrid booking?

Yes. Madrid cars usually include a cancellation option up to 24 hours before pickup; check that yours does.

Without the option

Give 7 days’ notice for standard cars and 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles. Later cancellation or a no-show keeps the advance.

The refund

Email support with your voucher. The advance returns within 14 days, minus a 6% payment fee. Rebook to change the dates.

Madrid car rental questions

Is Atocha pickup the same as the airport?

No. Atocha is a separate pickup place with its own list of cars. Choose it when you search if you arrive by train.

Are there kilometre limits?

Many Madrid cars cap the distance per day. Check the allowance before a long trip such as Cuenca and back.

Can I pick up at night?

Some cars are not available at night and some charge more for it. Enter your real time to see what you can book.

How are rental days counted?

By 24-hour periods. Even a few hours beyond the last full day is charged as another day.

Can a pet come along?

Small pets can, inside a travel carrier the whole time.
