Car hire in Alicante

Book car rental in Alicante with local companies, collecting at the airport or having the car brought to you, then set off along the Costa Blanca.

Cheap car rental in Alicante

The lowest prices with no extra handover charge, all six collected at the airport. Each card shows the deposit the company holds at pickup.

Which class of car suits your trip?

Collecting at the airport or in town

Most Alicante offers start at the airport, 9 km south-west of the city. Delivery to an address in town is the other choice.

Airport handover

The company meets you at the spot written on your voucher. Save the company’s phone number before you fly, in case the flight runs late.

Delivery in town

Choose delivery and enter the address of your hotel or flat. Some delivered cars add a charge and some do not; the total already includes it.

Late arrivals

Search with your actual landing time: some cars are unavailable at night and others charge extra, shown in the price.

Can you hire a car in Alicante without a credit card?

No Alicante car asks for a credit card, and a few airport cars need no deposit at all. Each car shows its card and deposit rules before you book.

Where a card is needed, it has to be a physical card in the main driver’s name with raised details. Some companies take a debit card for the deposit, and the car says so if they do.

A few Alicante Airport cars count as car hire in Spain with no deposit, although most cars here still hold one.

If you carry only a debit card, there are cars in Spain that need no credit card at other pickup places too.

Tolls and roads out of Alicante

Tolls, parking and fines are paid by the renter. Keep to paved public roads, which rules out dirt tracks down to remote coves.

  • The AP-7 between Alicante and Cartagena is a state toll motorway. The clear-road route to Murcia runs on the A-7 instead.
  • Benidorm, Altea and Dénia are reached on the AP-7 heading north. Check whether that stretch charges a toll on the day you drive.
  • Guadalest lies inland on the CV-70, so the last part of that trip leaves the motorway behind.

Police checks and on-the-spot fines

Spanish traffic police can fine you at the roadside. Know these points before your first drive out of Alicante.

Paying a fine

Police issue fines on the spot, including for speeding. Paying within 20 days cuts the amount by half.

Alcohol and drugs

Roadside checks for alcohol and drugs are regular. Breath alcohol must stay under 0.25 mg/l, with a lower limit for drivers in their first two years.

Phones

Using a phone is illegal even when pulled over at the side of the road, unless you are fully off it. Earpieces are not allowed either.

Papers

Carry your driving licence and an ID document every time you drive, not only on the day of pickup.

Outside towns, expect 90 km/h on ordinary roads and 120 on motorways; signs can set other limits.

Returning the car somewhere else

Alicante cars can be booked one way to Valencia, Benidorm, Madrid or Malaga. Set the return place in the search and the price includes the one-way cost.

Valencia

Valencia returns go to the airport, a city office or an address. Pick the one closest to where your trip ends.

Madrid or Malaga

For Madrid choose Barajas Airport, Atocha station or an address; Malaga returns are at its airport. Charges differ by car.

Benidorm

A Benidorm return ends at a rental office or a delivery address. It suits a stay that moves up the coast.

Drives along the Costa Blanca

From Plaza de los Luceros: Elche, about 25 min for 27.7 km; Benidorm, about 45 min for 46.7 km; Altea, about 50 min for 53.1 km; Guadalest, about 1 h for 62.9 km; Dénia, about 1 h 15 min for 91.3 km; Murcia, about 1 h for 80.0 km.

Times start in the city centre and assume clear roads, with no stops.

Benidorm is about 45 minutes up the coast, and car rental in Benidorm has its own delivery and office cars if you would rather start there.

How the price changes through the year

Bars show the typical day rate for a week’s hire starting on the 15th of each month.

Week-long rentals from the 15th of each month, November 2026 to October 2027.

Families, groups and automatic cars

Alicante has four-seat city cars up to nine-seat vans. Choose the gearbox and any child seats while you book.

Automatic or manual

The airport offers both gearboxes, and the delivered cars are automatics. Use the gearbox filter to see only your type.

Larger cars

Seven, eight and nine-seat cars are on offer. Check the luggage space too, as a full set of seats leaves less room in the boot.

Children

Child seats are added as extras and priced per car. Some companies also list a seat for babies under one year old.

Extra drivers

A second driver is an extra on the car, free on some offers. Add them at booking and check the car’s age and licence rules.

What does the excess cover on an Alicante hire car?

The excess is the most you pay towards damage under the cover level you pick. Each car shows its levels, and a higher one can cut the excess.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Gaps in standard cover. Standard insurance excludes the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior, so damage there is yours to pay.

Report an incident at once. Call the company straight away and obtain a police report unless it agrees otherwise; failing to do so voids the insurance.

Conduct that voids it. Neglect, deliberate damage and vandalism cancel the cover at any level.

Excess and deposit. The excess on a hire car caps what you pay for damage; the deposit is a separate sum held at pickup.

Which licence do you need?

An original national licence with details in Latin script, valid until your return date. Copies and phone versions are refused.

Home-only licences

Where a licence is valid only in its home country, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. Keep it with the original licence.

Minimum age

Each car lists a minimum age and years of driving. These can differ between similar cars, and the company may refuse a driver who falls short.

Fuel and handing the car back

Return the tank at the level you received it. Extending the rental needs the company’s agreement in advance.

Topping up

  • Any shortfall is charged at the company’s own fuel rate, while a fuller tank earns nothing back.

Clean enough to check

  • If dirt stops the company inspecting the car, it is washed at your expense. Pets must be small and stay in a carrier.

Driving into Portugal or France

Some cars from Alicante list fees for entering Portugal, France and Andorra, or other EU countries. Tell the company in advance so it can prepare the documents.

Where a car offers one of these fees, its price shows on the car before you book. Without it, plan to keep the car in Spain.

What happens if your plans change?

Most Alicante bookings include a cancellation option up to 24 hours before pickup. Without it, the deadline comes earlier.

Deadlines

Without the option, cancel 7 days ahead, or 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles. After that, or after a missed pickup, the advance is kept.

Refund and new dates

Send the cancellation by email with your voucher. The advance comes back within 14 days, minus a 6% payment fee; new dates mean a new booking.

Alicante car rental questions answered

Can I take a small dog in the car?

Small pets only, and they must stay in a travel carrier throughout. Larger animals cannot travel.

Can I cancel just after booking?

Either side can cancel within 24 hours of the booking being confirmed and the advance paid. The advance is returned, less the payment fee.

Who do I call about the car itself?

Questions about the car, its condition or the service go to the rental company. Its contact details are in the email you receive after booking.

Do I pay the rest in cash?

The balance is paid to the company at pickup, by the methods listed on your car. Some take cash and cards, others cards only.

How long is a rental day?

Rentals are charged in blocks of 24 hours. Picking up at noon and returning at 3 pm the next day counts as two days.
