Heading for Dubai? The E11 carries you most of the way.

Can you rent a car at Abu Dhabi Airport without a credit card?

Yes: none of the six cars above needs one, but each holds a deposit, so check how the company takes it.

The deposit is returned 30 days after the hire ends. Tolls and fines that arrive in that time are taken from it, with an admin cost.

Not carrying a credit card? Compare cars in the UAE that need no credit card and the way each takes payment.

For a lower hold, choose one of the cars with no deposit; they still carry an excess at their starting cover.

Staying in Abu Dhabi? The Corniche time ends on Corniche Road at Al Khubeirah; hotels elsewhere in the city may take longer.

Al Maktoum Airport is 88.3 km away, about 1 h 15 min. Times leave out traffic, toll gates and the handover itself.

Your first drive out of the terminal

Adjust the seat, mirrors and sat nav while parked. Then join the motorway when you feel ready.

Follow the posted limit

Limits are signed road by road, and some roads have a minimum speed too. A limit is a ceiling, not a target.

Belts in every seat

The driver and all passengers must belt up. Children under four need a child seat, so book one with the car.

No phone at the wheel

Holding or using a phone while driving is an offence. Set the route before you pull away.

Zero alcohol

Drinking and driving is illegal in any amount, and it is likely to void your insurance after an accident.

Keep to paved public roads, even in an SUV. Dunes, sand tracks and unpaved shortcuts are banned for every rental car.

Darb tolls and turquoise kerbs

Darb gates sit on the bridges into Abu Dhabi city and charge at peak times. Paid parking bays have turquoise kerbs.

Gates read the number plate, so the bill goes to the company first. It passes tolls on to you, with an admin cost; Dubai’s Salik gates work the same way.

Can you return the car at Dubai Airport?

Yes, some cars picked up here can be dropped at Dubai International. Search with both airports to see the one-way total.

Choose Dubai International

Pick the Dubai airport place as the return, not a hotel or a town address.

Get the handback point

Ask the company where its staff meet you at Dubai before the return day.

Fix changes in advance

If your flight moves, agree the new return with the company. A different return point is priced again.

From here to Dubai Airport is about 128 km; allow about 1 h 45 min, plus time for fuel and the check.

The car cannot leave the UAE

No rental car from here may cross into Oman or any other country, whatever its cover.

Typical daily prices across the year

Every bar is a week-long rental with airport pickup and return, shown as a typical day. Your own dates may be higher or lower.

N/A shows a month with no airport price yet.

The handover charge is spread across each daily price. A night pickup or added cover can change the total.

You pay for at least 24 hours, and any extra part day counts as a whole one. Agree an extension before the hire runs out.

Travelling as a group or family

Larger cars are on offer here, but seats and boot space trade off. Check both before you choose.

Seven seats or more

Cars with seven or eight seats can be booked here. Ask how much luggage fits with every seat up.

Seats for children

Book child seats as extras with the car. Check the fitting at handover before the family drive.

Share the driving legally

Add any second driver to the booking. They must meet that car’s age and experience rules too.

Mind the daily kilometres

Most cars here carry a daily kilometre limit. A Dubai round trip uses a lot of it, so check the extra charge.

Which cover comes with an Abu Dhabi Airport hire car?

Each car shows the level it starts with, its deposit and its excess. Read all three before you choose a car.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Basic on four cars. The MG 3, Corolla, MG ZS and ASX start with Basic, a deposit and an excess. Paid Plus takes both to zero.

No deposit on some cars. At the same airport, the Kia Sonet starts with Minimum cover and the Chevrolet Captiva with Basic. Neither takes a deposit, but both keep an excess.

Not in standard cover. Damage to the wheels, underside, windscreen or interior is excluded. Deliberate damage through vandalism or neglect voids the cover.

Report it at once. After an accident, tell the company and get a police report unless it agrees otherwise. If you do not, the cover is lost.

Between the cover levels, the deposit and the excess can change separately, so read both lines.

Driving documents to pack

An International Driving Permit goes with your own licence. Both must still be valid on the day you return the car.

Licence plus permit

Bring the original licence and the permit; copies and phone images are refused at the handover.

Driver rules per car

Minimum age and years licensed differ from car to car. The company can refuse a driver who falls short.

From the UK, the permit you need for the UAE is the 1968 type.

Fuel and cleaning before you fly home

The return check takes time. Build it into the drive back to Zayed International.

Refill to the pickup level

  • The company charges its own rate for any missing fuel. Bringing back more than you took earns nothing.

Make the check possible

  • A car too dirty to inspect is washed at your cost. Clear out bags and rubbish before handing back the keys.

Need an extra day? Agree it with the company before the booked return.

Cancelling a reservation

Changing the car or dates means cancelling and making a new booking.

When to cancel

Give seven days’ notice for most cars, or thirty for luxury cars and convertibles. The short-notice option cuts it to 24 hours.

Getting money back

Send support your voucher with the request. The refund, minus a 6% fee, arrives within fourteen days; late cancelling loses the advance.

Abu Dhabi Airport car hire questions

Is there a handover charge at Zayed International?

Yes, on the cars offered here. It covers bringing the car to the airport and is already in the price you see.

Can I drive from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai the same day?

Yes. Downtown Dubai is about 1 h 30 min away on clear roads. Watch the daily kilometre limit if you plan to come back the same day.

Are the cars automatic?

Nearly all of them are. Still check the gearbox shown on the car you pick before you book.

Can I pay Darb tolls myself?

No. Gates read the plate and bill the company, which passes the cost on to you after the hire, usually through the deposit.

Can a pet come along?

A small pet can, if it stays in a travel carrier for the whole trip.
