Car hire at Muscat Airport

Car rental at Muscat International, handed over by local companies. Compare automatic cars, deposits and cover levels before you pay.

Cheap car rental for a Muscat Airport arrival

Six cars priced for collection and return at the airport. Check the deposit and the cover each one starts with, not only the daily rate.

Small saloons, SUVs and people carriers

Class tiles start from the cheapest car of each size in the same week, and half of Muscat Airport offers cost over €44 a day.

Prices are for handover at the airport. N/A means no car in that class is offered here.

Leaving the province anywhere in Oman needs confirming when you book, and no rental car may cross the border.

How is the car handed over at Muscat Airport?

Each company sets its own meeting arrangement, and your voucher says what it is.

Use the voucher details

It names the company, how it meets you and its phone number. Keep a copy you can open offline.

Call once you land

Ring or message the company when you reach the arrivals hall, and warn it early if your flight runs late.

Record the condition

Photograph any marks and check the fuel gauge with the company before you drive off.

Some cars here include a charge for the airport handover, and some have none. It is already in the total.

  • Never leave the car on the forecourt; unattended vehicles are seized.
  • Wheelchair users have a signposted lane and parking space.

Collecting and returning your car

  1. Clear customs first then call the number on your voucher.
  2. Late arrival? Some cars charge extra for a night pickup.
  3. Drop the car back where your voucher says.
Need a wheelchair? Tell your airline in advance; the airlines at Muscat Airport provide the wheelchair service.

Driving away from Muscat International

  1. For central Muscat head east on the highway, sea on your left.
  2. Heading for Seeb? go west on the same highway instead.
  3. Rain on the way? Roads that cross dry riverbeds can flood.
Leaving the forecourt? Waiting outside Departures or Arrivals is limited to 10 minutes, so load up and go.

Do you need a credit card for car hire at Muscat Airport?

Not for the six cars above, but each holds a deposit, so check how the company takes it.

You pay 15 to 20% online and the balance to the company at the airport. Each car lists the payment methods it accepts.

Hiring elsewhere in Oman as well? Cars that need no credit card each list their own payment rules.

Prefer no hold at all? Pick one of the cars with no deposit; they still carry an excess at their starting cover.

On the road from Muscat International

Spend a minute with the mirrors, lights and sat nav before you drive off.

Speed and radars

Speeding fines start at 5 km/h over the posted limit, and radar detectors are banned in the car as well.

Roundabout priority

Give way to cars already on the roundabout. Slow down as you approach, and never stop or overtake on it.

Animals on the road

UK travel advice warns of camels and goats on the road, and the ROP lists not slowing for animals as an offence.

Lights in poor weather

Switch the lights on when fog, dust or rain cuts visibility. The ROP lists failing to do so as an offence.

Province travel and paved roads

Trips outside the province must be confirmed when you book. Every car stays on paved public roads.

Tell support your route at the booking stage, as the company may set its own price and terms. A distance on this page does not mean the trip is approved.

Can you return a Muscat Airport car in Salalah?

A few cars can be picked up here and returned at Salalah Airport or in the city. Enter both places to see the one-way total.

Set both ends

Choose Muscat Airport for pickup and Salalah for the return before comparing prices.

Confirm the province trip

Ask support to confirm the journey south when you book, as the rule requires.

Count the kilometres

Check the daily limit against a drive of over 1,000 km before you choose.

Salalah is 1,016 km away by road, about 11 h 30 min without stops. Add rest stops and fuel on top.

No crossing into the UAE

A car rented here cannot leave Oman. Permission for another province does not cover a border crossing.

Typical daily prices month by month at Muscat Airport

Each bar is a seven-day rental with pickup and return at the airport, as a typical daily price. Use it to compare months.

Any month without a price shows N/A.

Any airport handover charge is included. A different time of day, cover level or extra can change the total.

Even a short hire is charged as 24 hours, and an extra part day costs a full day. Ask before the end if you need more time.

Seats and space for families and groups

Seven- and eight-seat cars are on offer at the airport. Check the boot with every seat in use.

Larger cars

Cars with seven or eight seats can be booked here. Bulky luggage may still need a bigger car.

Child seats

Order child seats with the booking and check the fitting before you drive off.

A second driver

Add every extra driver to the booking. Each must meet that car’s age and experience rules.

Daily kilometres

Most cars here have a daily kilometre limit. Long drives to Nizwa or Sur use it quickly, so check the charge.

What does the insurance cover on a Muscat Airport rental?

Cover levels differ between these cars, and every one starts with some excess. Compare the deposit and excess as well as the price.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Minimum on two cars. The Changan Alsvin and the Mitsubishi Attrage start with third-party cover only. On the Attrage, Full lowers the excess but not the deposit.

Basic with a deposit. The Yaris Ativ and Sunny start with Basic, a deposit and an excess. Full costs extra on both and does not lower the deposit or the excess.

No deposit on some cars. Some airport cars, such as one MG 3 and a Honda City, start with Basic and no deposit, but an excess remains. Paying for Plus takes that excess to zero.

Not in standard cover. Wheels, the underside, the windscreen and the interior are excluded. Report any accident at once and get a police report.

On these cars, damage cover and excess change separately from level to level, so read both lines. Deliberate damage through vandalism or neglect voids the insurance.

Licence rules for drivers arriving in Muscat

Bring your original national licence with details in Latin script, valid until the car goes back.

The licence itself

Copies and digital licences are not accepted. If your licence is only valid at home, bring an International Driving Permit too.

Age and experience

Every car sets its own minimum age and years licensed. The company can refuse a driver who does not meet them.

Carry the permit with you and show it if asked.

Bringing the car back to the airport

Allow time for refuelling and the inspection before check-in.

Match the fuel

  • Return the same fuel level you collected. Missing fuel is charged at the company’s rate, and extra is not paid back.

A clean enough car

  • If dirt or dust stops the inspection, the car is washed at your expense.

Hand the car back at the meeting point on your voucher, then head for Departures.

Cancelling or changing a booking

There is no direct edit: cancel the booking and make a new one.

Deadlines

Seven days for ordinary cars, thirty for luxury cars and convertibles, or 24 hours with the short-notice cancellation option.

Refunds

Email support with your voucher. The advance is refunded within fourteen days, minus 6%; a late cancellation or no-show loses it.

Muscat Airport car rental questions

Can I keep the car longer than booked?

Ask the company before the booked return. A rental day is 24 hours, so even a short overrun is charged as a full day.

Do I need Omani rials at the airport?

You need them for the car park machines, which take rials only. A cash machine stands in the arrivals concourse.

Can I drive the car to Dubai?

No. Rental cars in Oman cannot cross any border. Book a separate car on the UAE side.

Is Nizwa a day trip from Muscat Airport?

It is about 2 hours each way on clear roads. Tell support your route when you book, as trips outside the province need confirming.

Can a small pet travel in the car?

Yes, if it stays in a travel carrier on every journey.
