Six cars collected and returned at Porto Airport, cheapest first. The deposit line under each price matters as much as the rate.

Porto Airport pickup and returnThe tiles carry the lowest day rate in each class for that same November week. The lowest prices all need a credit card and a deposit of at least €1,600, and half of all offers here cost more than €70 a day. Nine-seat vans and SUVs are offered alongside small manual cars.
Across Portugal, each car lists its own deposit, card rule and cover, so compare those as well as the class price.
A local company hands the car over. The meeting point and its phone number are on your voucher.
It holds the meeting instructions and the company’s number. Keep a copy that opens without mobile data.
Some companies drive renters to the car by shuttle bus. Your voucher says whether yours is one of them.
Check the contract, the fuel level and the marks noted on the car before you sign and drive away.
The rental firms at the terminal counters are separate businesses; a car booked here is not collected from them.
Where an airport handover charge applies, it is already in the total. On most cars there is none.
Money, Wi-Fi and the lounge, where to stop at the kerb, and the toll roads you meet straight after the airport.
Parking levels -1 and -2 each have a MyWay help point. The airport’s own parks are the only ones inside the airport; book online at least six hours ahead.
Bays for the reduced mobility badge are in every car park.
Yes, on a few cars. Most take a deposit, and the amount, card type and any cover that lowers it are shown on each car.
Any card for the deposit must be a physical one in the main driver’s name, with embossed details. No deposit does not mean no card: a company can still ask for card details for its toll service.
Check the methods for paying the balance during booking and again on your voucher.
Peso da Régua, on the river, is 102 kilometres away: about one hour thirty minutes without traffic.

Driving into Porto ends at Avenida dos Aliados, mostly on the A28. Pinhão, further up the Douro, is about one hour forty-five minutes.
Coimbra lies 131.5 kilometres south on the A1, about one hour forty-five minutes.
Keep right and overtake on the left. Signs always take priority over the general rules below.
Give way to vehicles coming from your right at crossroads and junctions, unless a sign or marking says otherwise.
Coming down a slip road, you give way to traffic already on the motorway. The same applies leaving a car park or fuel station.
Stop at an amber light unless you are so close that braking hard would be needed. A green arrow under red needs a stop first.
Headlights go on from dusk to dawn, and by day in fog, heavy rain or smoke. Signed tunnels need dipped lights too.
Do not drink and drive: the limit is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l in the first three years of a licence. Emergency services answer on 112.
Some motorways near Porto have only overhead gantries. The A1, A3 and A7 still have toll booths.
Rental cars in Portugal must have a toll device, and any toll service offered at pickup is on the company’s own terms. Ask what it costs before you leave.
Without that service, tolls on cars with Portuguese plates can be paid afterwards at post offices or Payshop agents.
Some cars offer a cross-border option with a fee. Add it and warn the company in advance so it can prepare the documents.
Vigo is about one hour forty-five minutes north of the airport, plus any delay at the border. A car without the option stays in Portugal.
Some cars can be handed back at Lisbon Airport, and a few at Faro Airport. The return airport changes the total.
Choose the airport, not a city address, when you search. Then compare the new total with a round trip.
The one-way cost is often part of the rental price, so you may not see a separate drop-off fee.
Ask the company where the car is handed back at the destination airport, and allow time for the check.
Central Lisbon is about three hours thirty minutes south on the A1, a short way from Lisbon Airport.
Bars show the lowest daily price for a week from mid-month, collected and returned at Porto Airport.
N/A: no car was listed for that month.
Name every driver, book seats for the children and check the luggage space before you confirm.
Each extra driver goes in the contract first and must meet the car’s age and licence rules. On some cars it costs nothing.
Book a baby seat, child seat or booster with the car. Children under 12 and under 135 cm must use one.
Nine-seat vans are offered at Porto Airport. Check what luggage still fits once every seat is taken.
A small pet may ride along in its carrier. It must stay inside the carrier throughout the journey.
Several cars here already include Full Coverage. On the others the upgrade price and effect differ, so read each car.
Full Coverage included on several. Some small cars and vans here start with Full Coverage and no excess, while keeping a modest deposit.
The top level on some. A few cars include Full Coverage Plus, with no deposit and no excess at all.
Basic on the rest. The other cars start with Basic (CDW), which carries a large excess and a deposit to match.
Paid Full Coverage helps. On those Basic cars, upgrading brings the deposit down to a few hundred euros and the excess to zero.
Even good cover has gaps: standard insurance does not cover wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. Each level changes the damage cover and excess in its own way.
Neglect or deliberate vandalism cancels the insurance. Report any accident to the company at once and get a police report.
Bring the original licence, written in Latin letters and valid for the whole hire. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted.
Carry an International Driving Permit if your licence is valid only in its home country. It goes with the licence, not instead of it.
Minimum age and licence years are set car by car. A similar model from another company may ask for more.
With a UK photocard licence you can drive in Portugal. Holders of an old paper UK licence need a photocard or an IDP.
Before the return, refuel and check nothing is left inside.
You pay your own fuel, parking and fines. Some companies hold the deposit for 21 to 30 days after the return so that late fines or tolls can be taken from it.
Switching car or dates means cancelling and booking again.
For standard cars, cancel at least seven days before pickup; thirty days for luxury cars and convertibles; 24 hours with the short-notice option. Miss it and the advance is kept.
Quote your voucher when you cancel. The advance is refunded within 14 days, minus 6% in payment costs, in the currency you used.
For the Douro, Braga or the coast, yes: you drive off after landing. If you spend the first days in Porto itself, you can start the hire on the day you leave town and pay only for the days you drive.
Not guaranteed. Porto Airport cars are offered “or similar”, so the company may hand over a comparable car from the same class.
Yes. Nine-seat vans are offered alongside seven-seaters. Check the luggage space and the deposit, which vary by van.
Most have no limit. A few allow 200 kilometres a day, and the limit is shown on the car before you pay.
Yes. Manual and automatic cars are both offered; filter by gearbox and check the car’s own details, not just its photo.
Add your flight times, compare totals, deposits and cover, and book the car that fits your trip north.
