Choosing a car for Madeira’s hills

Class prices here are the cheapest daily rates for the week of the cars above. The lowest prices all need a credit card and a deposit of at least €1,250, and half of all offers here cost more than €47 a day. Seat counts range from two-seaters to nine-seat vans, with manual and automatic gearboxes.

The island is part of Portugal, and the country’s rental terms apply here too.

Where do you pick up a rental car at Madeira Airport?

At the meeting point on your voucher. Local companies hand the cars over, and the voucher also lists their phone number.

Your meeting instructions

The voucher tells you where to meet and who to call. Save it to your phone so it opens without a signal.

In person or by shuttle

Some companies meet renters in person, others run a shuttle bus. The voucher says which way your company works.

Look the car over

Note scratches, the fuel level and the tyres before you go. Report anything missing from the list while still there.

The rental desks in the terminal belong to other firms, and cars booked here are not collected from them.

Many cars carry an airport handover charge, and it is already counted in the total you compare.

Collecting and returning your car

  1. Giving the car back? Head to the return point named on your voucher, then to Departures.
  2. Night arrival? Not every car is handed over in the small hours, and some charge extra. Search with your real times.
  3. Need assistance? Book MyWay through your airline, or at least 48 hours before the flight.
Arriving with MyWay? Look for the Designated Point of Arrival, a phone booth with the MyWay logo, as soon as you reach the terminal.

Driving away from Madeira Airport

  1. Joining the expressway? The airport links straight to the expressway that runs to Funchal and round the island.
  2. Any tolls? None. Every expressway and main road on Madeira is free to use.
  3. Heading inland? Some mountain roads have many bends and need extra care.
Parking in Funchal? White lines are free, blue lines are paid and yellow lines mean no parking. Meters run on weekdays and Saturday mornings.

Services in the terminal

  • Free Wi-Fi on the VINCI Airports network.
  • ANA Lounge after security on floor 3, open to anyone who pays the fee.
  • MyWay contact points on levels 0 and 1, for travellers who booked assistance.

  • RoofedCovered spaces
  • Open-airOutdoor spaces

The airport’s car parks range from low-cost to premium, all with a footpath to the passenger terminal. They are the only parks inside the airport.

  • Picking someone up? Stop only in the marked pick-up and drop-off areas.

Getting used to driving on Madeira

Traffic drives on the right, as on the mainland. Take the first kilometres slowly while you learn the car.

Speed limits

In towns the limit is 50 km/h unless signed otherwise. Other roads allow 90, car-only roads 100 and motorways 120.

Roundabout lanes

Give way to cars already on the roundabout. For the first exit use the right lane; for later exits move right after the exit before yours.

Alcohol

Stay under 0.5 g/l of blood alcohol, or 0.2 g/l if you have held your licence for less than three years.

Phones and emergencies

Use only a hands-free phone while driving. If something goes wrong on the road, call 112 for help.

All passengers wear seat belts. Children under 12 and under 135 cm need a seat suited to their size.

Mountain roads and the peaks

Pico do Areeiro stands at 1,818 metres, and parking at the top is paid by the hour.

Often several roads lead to the same place, so pick the one you feel comfortable driving. The car must stay on paved public roads.

Leaving the island

A Madeira car cannot be taken on a ferry to the mainland, and a mainland car cannot come to Madeira.

This rule holds whatever cover or extras you add to the booking.

Can you collect at Madeira Airport and return in Funchal?

Yes, on some cars. A Funchal return can be at the port or by delivery in town, with any charge in the total.

Pick the Funchal return

Choose the Port place or City delivery as the return when you search. Cars that allow it show the new total.

Compare with the airport

A town return often adds a charge. Compare the total with an airport return before deciding.

Confirm the details

Ask the company exactly where and when the car is handed back in Funchal, and keep its number with you.

Returning in town still needs time for fuel and the handback check, so do not leave it to the last minute before a flight.

Madeira Airport prices across the seasons

The lowest daily price per month for seven days collected and returned at Madeira Airport.

Lowest daily price for a week collected and returned at Madeira Airport.

Fewer cars are on offer for the summer and autumn weeks than for winter so far, so those bars can still move.

The shortest hire is one 24-hour day; a few hours over is charged as another day.

Getting everyone and everything into the car

Check drivers, children’s seats and luggage room before you pay.

Second driver

Put any second driver in the contract before they take the wheel. Some cars include this free; on others it is charged.

Child seats and boosters

Children under 12 and under 135 cm need a fitted seat. Add it when you book and check the fitting at the handover.

Seven-seaters

Seven-seat cars and nine-seat vans can be booked. Check the boot with every seat in use.

Small pets only

Small pets are allowed in a closed travel carrier, and they stay in it for the whole rental.

How does car rental insurance work at Madeira Airport?

Cover starts at different levels on different cars, and the excess can be larger than the deposit. Check both figures.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Minimum on some. A few cars start with Minimum (TPL) cover only. Paying for Basic can cut the deposit while leaving the excess as it was.

Excess above the deposit. On some Basic cars the excess is far higher than the deposit, so a small deposit does not mean small risk.

Plus clears both. Full Coverage Plus, where offered, brings the deposit and excess to zero. Some cars include it in the price.

Full on others. Some cars offer Full Coverage instead. On some it takes the excess to zero and the deposit down to a small sum; on others the excess stays.

Standard insurance does not cover the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen or interior, and the car hire excess depends on the level you choose.

Intentional vandalism and neglect void the cover. Tell the company about any accident at once and get a police report.

Licences for driving on Madeira

The original licence, in Latin script and valid until the car goes back, is required. A copy or a digital licence will not do.

IDP for some licences

Where a licence is valid only in its issuing country, add an International Driving Permit and bring both.

Age and licence years

Each car sets its own minimum age and driving experience. Two similar cars can ask for different things.

UK photocard licences are accepted for driving in Portugal. A paper UK licence must be replaced with a photocard, or carried with an IDP.

Dropping the car back at Madeira Airport

Fill up and clear out the car before the return check.

Return the same fuel

  • Bring back the fuel level you started with. A lower level is billed at the company’s rate; a higher one is not refunded.

Washing charge

  • A car returned too dirty to check is cleaned at your expense, so shake out the sand and clear the rubbish first.

Fines, fuel and parking are your costs. Some companies keep the deposit for 21 to 30 days after the return, and take any later fine from it.

Changing or cancelling a Madeira Airport booking

There is no edit button: to change the car or the dates, cancel and rebook.

Notice needed

Seven days before pickup for standard cars, thirty for luxury cars and convertibles, or 24 hours with the short-notice option. A later cancellation or no-show forfeits the advance.

Refund timing

Include your voucher in the request. The advance is returned within 14 days, less a 6% payment fee, in your original currency.

If you want to see more than Funchal, yes. A car takes you to the north coast and the peaks on your own timetable.

If you want the car from the first day, yes, since you drive off on arrival. If you only need a car for part of the stay, some cars can be delivered in Funchal instead.

Can I take a Madeira hire car to Porto Santo?

Ask the rental company before you book, and do not assume it is allowed. Without its yes, keep the car on Madeira.

Some cars, yes. Most are offered “or similar”, but a guaranteed model is marked on the car, and you can filter for it.
