Car hire in Valletta

Rent a car in Valletta delivered straight to where you stay, with free delivery, cars that need no credit card, and protection options listed before you pay.

Valletta rental deals with address delivery

Delivery is free on these cars. Compare deposit and gearbox, then choose your dates for the full booking price.

Small cars, automatic choices and passenger space

Most cars here are manual, with an automatic option. Seats run from four to seven, as shown below.

A similar model may replace the one shown. Check features, luggage room and whether the car suits your accommodation’s parking.

Where will your Valletta car be handed over?

The company delivers to your Valletta address. For an airport start, choose that option and follow its own meeting instructions.

Delivered to you

Give your full address and agree where to meet. A driver brings the car; there is no rental office there.

Airport pickup

Starting at the airport? Select the airport option. Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Phone contact

Add the country code to your booking phone and keep it on. Warn the company early if your arrival changes.

Airport bookings can have different cars, prices and handover rules from Valletta delivery, so pick your pickup and return points carefully. Some of the same cars are also delivered in Sliema.

Keep your phone reachable for the whole rental and the day before, and agree any change of arrival time or address.

Can a debit card hold the deposit?

Some delivered cars take a debit card for the deposit, but you still pay a deposit. Check your car’s card rules and balance payment.

On some cars the deposit goes on a debit or credit card, not cash; the rest of the hire takes cash or card.

A debit card must be the real card, with the main driver’s details embossed. Bring it to the delivery.

You pay 15 to 20% when booking and the balance on delivery. Ask separately how the deposit is returned.

How far is Valletta from Malta Airport?

Valletta City Gate is 7.7 km and about 15 minutes from the airport on clear roads. All six drives start at the airport.

The route ends at City Gate, near the city ditch. Check whether the way to your address goes into the access zone.

City Gate to Ċirkewwa is 27.7 km, about 40 minutes; ferry waits and the crossing are extra, and the route says nothing about taking the car to Gozo.

Allow for the handover, congestion and stops, plus the last stretch to your accommodation. Some of the same cars are also delivered in Qawra.

Understanding Valletta’s controlled access zone

Charging in the Valletta access zone runs 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays. Hire cars are not exempt, so talk to the company about access.

  • The registered owner is billed for a car entering during charging hours, and the company owns the car. Ask how a charge would reach you; do not assume any fee.
  • Electric cars and hybrids are exempt. Check your car qualifies; being a rental does not make it exempt.
  • Enter after 14:00 and leave before 08:00 next day, and there is no charge. Arrive earlier and stay past 14:00, and you are treated differently.
  • The first 30 minutes are free, and public holidays are exempt. Check the current rules with the company before driving into the zone.

Paying for access is not permission to park. Check street rules and your accommodation’s parking.

Mdina keeps visitor cars out of its walled streets, apart from legal exemptions, so park or meet outside.

Road rules for trips beyond the capital

Malta drives on the left, though some listed cars have left-hand steering. Check your car before you set off.

Allow for local road limits

Towns and villages have a 50 km/h limit; outside them it is 80 km/h. Lower posted limits come first, and a limit is not a target.

Keep hand-held devices unused

A hand-held phone must not be held or used while moving or stuck in traffic. The ear beside the window must stay free of earphones.

Use belts and child restraints

Wear seat belts and give every child who needs one a proper seat. This goes beyond under-threes, so check older children too.

Retain emergency contact details

Dial 112 for police, fire or ambulance. Tell the rental company straight after an insured incident, even if emergency services came.

Roads and driving standards can be poor, so plan journeys with time to spare.

The contract allows paved public roads only, including the road to where you are going.

Airport-area collection with a Valletta finish

Delivered cars may begin in Luqa and end at a Valletta address. Follow the meeting details on your voucher.

Confirm the starting place

Follow the Luqa meeting details and company contact on your voucher.

Agree the capital return

Agree the Valletta address, time and access before the return day.

Luqa to Valletta is confirmed for delivered cars only.

Typical Valletta prices across twelve months

Each bar shows a typical daily price for a week from the 15th. Months with no price show N/A.

Classes and monthly prices may differ from the example cars above.

At least 24 hours are charged, and any extra part of a day is billed as a whole day, so handover times affect the price.

Passenger needs and approved drivers

Delivered cars seat from four to seven. Plan bags and child seats around that, and get every driver approved before handing over keys.

Four seats or five

Some cars seat four, others five. Check the seat count for your car before paying.

Seats for younger passengers

Order the right child seat with your extras and check it is fitted on delivery, including for older children.

A seven-seat delivery choice

A seven-seater is available. Ask how your cases fit with every seat in use.

Add another driver properly

Put every extra driver on the booking and confirm they meet the rules. Holding a licence is not enough to drive.

Use the car’s own prices for extras and drivers, and check the equipment when the car arrives.

Compare liability alongside the deposit

Full Coverage works differently from car to car. After picking a cover level, check both the excess and the deposit.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Both reduced: Some cars’ Full Coverage brings down the deposit as well as the excess, against Minimum and Basic.

Excess removed: On other cars, Full Coverage clears the excess but leaves the deposit as it was.

Outside standard cover: Windscreen, interior, undercarriage and wheels. Ask whether an upgrade covers any of them.

Incident steps: Tell the company immediately and get police papers unless it agrees otherwise. Ignoring this, neglect or deliberate vandalism cancels the insurance.

Cover levels vary by car. The insurance explanation helps, but your car’s terms and the reporting rule come first.

Which documents should you prepare?

Bring your original national licence with Latin-script details, valid for the whole hire. Copies and electronic licences do not count.

Licence and accompanying IDP

Your licence only valid at home? The contract strongly advises an International Driving Permit. Carry both and show the permit when asked.

Age and licence history

Each car sets its own age and experience rules, extra drivers included. Check them before you book; the examples below differ.

Licence experience rules differ: at age 21 one example needs a year, another needs two.

Fuel and return inspection in the capital

Plan time to unload and for the check before you leave. Know the return address and any access limits, especially inside Valletta’s zone.

Restore the collection level

  • Put back the fuel level noted at pickup. Any shortfall is billed at the company’s prices; extra fuel earns nothing back.

Leave the condition visible

  • Return the car clean enough for its condition to be checked; if dirt hides the bodywork you pay for washing, so allow time.

Ask for any extension before the rental ends. Fuel, parking and traffic fines are yours to pay.

National borders and the separate Gozo question

The car must stay in Malta. The rental terms do not cover the Gozo ferry, so ask the company before planning that crossing.

Although Gozo is inside Malta, neither ferry use nor insurance follows from that. Get the company’s answer in your contract first.

Gozo Channel crosses between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr in about 25 minutes. Carrying cars does not mean your rental may go.

What if the booking needs to change?

Check your car’s notice deadline before changing plans. The shorter deadline only comes with the matching option, and refund rules still apply.

Allow the correct notice

Ordinary hire: 7 days’ notice. Convertible or luxury: 30 days. With the cancellation option: 24 hours. Late cancelling or an unannounced no-show costs the advance.

Send the booking voucher

Email your voucher to support when you cancel. Eligible refunds are made within 14 days, less a 6% processing charge on the advance.

For new dates or another car, cancel and rebook. Extending a hire already under way needs the company’s approval first.

Valletta car hire questions

Does a delivered car have a rental desk in Valletta?

No. These cars are brought to an agreed address; there is no hotel desk or walk-in office. Confirm the meeting point with the company.

Can I use cash for the security deposit?

Not on some cars: they take the deposit by card, credit or debit, and cash only pays their balance.

Does CVA automatically exempt hire cars?

No. Hire cars get no automatic exemption. Exemptions cover electric and hybrid cars, subject to the access conditions.

Can a small pet travel in the car?

Small pets can, inside a travel carrier, on every journey however brief.

Does paying for city access provide parking?

No. Access charges are about entering the zone. Check street rules and your accommodation’s parking separately.
