Malta Airport handoverThe tiles give each class its cheapest day rate in the week of the cars above; half of all airport offers cost more than €23 a day. Not quoted means no car in that class is offered at the airport for these dates.
Manual and automatic cars are both offered, so check the gearbox.
Road signs in Malta are in English, which helps on the first drive from the airport.
Each company sets its own way of meeting you, and your voucher explains it. Do not assume it matches the airport’s own rental signs.
The voucher gives the company, its phone number and where to meet. Save it to your phone before the flight.
Share your flight number, and send a message if you land late or wait long for bags.
Note scratches, test the lights and check the fuel before signing. Ask about the steering side if it is new to you.
A car booked for the airport is collected and returned there. Cars delivered to a town address are a different booking.
The company must be able to call you from the eve of pickup until you return the keys.
What the terminal offers, the car parks and drop-off, and what to know on the first stretch of road.
The first 10 minutes are free in any of the airport car parks.
After a day, each extra day or part of one is charged in full.
Some airport cars need one and others do not, but every car takes a deposit.
If a credit card is required, the main driver brings it: physical, embossed and in their own name. Some companies take a debit card instead, which the booking and voucher will say.
Deposits differ a lot from car to car, so compare them alongside the daily price.
Sliema is 9.2 km away, about 15 minutes on clear roads. Valletta and St Julian’s take about the same.

The Valletta time ends at City Gate. Mdina’s walled streets are closed to visitor cars, so park outside.
Marsaxlokk is 6.5 km from the airport, about 15 minutes, and Buġibba 17.5 km, about 25 minutes. The Ċirkewwa ferry terminal is 27.9 km, about 40 minutes.
Malta drives on the left and overtakes on the right. Some cars here are left-hand drive, so take a moment to adjust.
The limit is 50 km/h in towns and villages and 80 km/h outside them. A lower posted limit always comes first.
Do not hold or use a phone while moving or stuck in traffic. No earphone in the ear by the window.
Everyone wears a seat belt. Children under 12 need a child seat suited to their weight, not only toddlers.
Call 112 for police, fire or an ambulance. After any damage, tell the company straight away.
Road surfaces and driving standards can be poor, so give yourself time. Every rental must stay on paved public roads.
Driving into Valletta on weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00 carries a charge, and hire cars are not exempt.
Inside the walls the streets are steep and often one-way, and parking is limited.
No, a car collected at the airport goes back to the airport. For a town finish, look at cars delivered from Luqa instead.
Book the airport for pickup and return, and plan your last day around the drive back.
Check where the company meets you for the handback before your departure day.
Tell the company in advance if you want to extend the hire, as the price can change.
Some cars delivered in Luqa can end at a Valletta address. That is a separate booking from an airport car.
The car cannot cross a border. Ask the company before you take the car to Gozo; the rental terms do not cover the ferry.
Bars show the lowest day rate on a seven-night airport hire starting mid-month. Your trip may cost more.
Where a month has no airport price yet, it reads N/A.
The summer months show fewer airport cars for now. Search your own dates to see what is offered.
You always pay for at least a day, and a few extra hours cost a whole day more.
Seat counts and boot space differ from car to car, so check before you pay.
Some city cars here have four seats, not five. The seat count is on every car.
People carriers with seven or more seats can be booked. Ask how your cases fit with every seat in use.
Order a suitable seat for every child as an extra, and look it over when the car is handed to you.
List every extra driver when you book. They face the same age and experience limits as the main driver.
Many airport cars start with Basic cover, a deposit and an excess, and several offer a higher level.
Full can clear the excess. On some cars, paying for Full takes the excess to zero, but the deposit stays the same.
Or lower both. On others, Full lowers both the deposit and the excess, though neither reaches zero.
No upgrade on some. A few cars offer nothing above Basic, so check the levels listed on the car before you book.
Not in standard cover. Wheels, the underside, the windscreen and the interior are excluded, and neglect or vandalism voids the cover.
If you have an accident, call the company immediately and ask the police for a report, unless the company tells you otherwise. The level you pick sets what the excess covers.
Your home licence must show its details in Latin letters and stay valid until the car is back.
Only the original card counts, not a copy or an app. A licence valid only at home should travel with an International Driving Permit.
The youngest age allowed and the years you must have held a licence differ by car, for extra drivers too.
Allow time for fuel and the inspection on top of the drive to Luqa.
You cover fuel, parking and any fines.
New dates or a different car mean cancelling and booking afresh.
A week ahead for standard cars and 30 days ahead for luxury models or convertibles. Booked the short-notice option? Then 24 hours is enough.
Write to support with the voucher attached. Within fourteen days you get the advance back minus 6%, unless you cancel late or miss pickup.
No car can be collected or returned on Gozo. If you plan to drive there, check with the company before you book whether the car may go on the ferry, and read your contract.
Not always. Malta drives on the left, but some cars here are left-hand drive. Look for the steering badge on each offer.
Yes. Automatic and manual cars are both offered at the airport, and the gearbox shows on each car before you book.
The bill goes to the company as the car’s owner. Ask at the handover how it recovers the charge; electric cars and hybrids are exempt.
Yes, as long as it stays in a travel carrier the whole time.
Add your flight times, choose a car and look over the car rental total, deposit, card rules and cover first.
