Choosing a car class at Trapani Airport

Birgi is the airport for the far west of Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala. These class prices are for a car collected and returned at the airport.

Automatic and manual cars are both offered, as are nine-seat vans. Not quoted means the class had no car on these dates. Seven- and nine-seaters count as vans, not Standard.

Where is your hire car handed over at Trapani Airport?

Cars booked here come from local companies. The voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Print or save the voucher

Keep it on your phone and on paper. It tells you where the company meets you and how to reach it.

Late landing?

Let the company know as soon as you can. A delay does not move your booking unless the company agrees.

Look the car over

Note scratches and the fuel gauge with the company before you sign. Ask for photos if anything is unclear.

Trapani Airport guide: services, parking and the drive out

What Birgi has in its single terminal, how its car park and drop-off work, and what to know before you set off in your hire car.

Parking and drop-off

  • P1Opposite the terminal

One car park, P1, sits directly opposite the terminal and is open 24 hours.

Pay by card or cash at the machines by the Arrivals exit or at the staffed desk; the exit columns take cards only.

  • Kiss and Fly in front of the terminal is for stopping to drop passengers only.
  • Entering the airport road is charged and includes one hour; after that the car park tariff applies.
  • After paying you have 15 minutes to drive out. A lost ticket costs a flat fee.

Services in the terminal

  • Free Wi-Fi for one hour, logging in with a social network account.
  • VIP room in the first-floor departures area.
  • Left luggage on the ground floor by Departures, open daily from 04:30 to 00:30.
  • Charging points for phones and tablets in both the arrivals and departures areas.
  • Newsagent and tobacconist on the ground floor, with vending machines.

Driving away from Trapani Airport

  1. Going to Palermo? The A29 motorway runs from Birgi to Palermo, about 90 km away.
  2. Yellow ZTL signs mark restricted old-town zones; do not pass one without a permit.
  3. Lights beyond towns Keep dipped headlights on unless the car has approved daytime lights.
Driving in summer? Wildfires are a risk in the long hot months, so take care on wooded roads and follow any closures.

Collecting and returning your car

  1. Arrivals is downstairs on the ground floor, beside the baggage belts.
  2. Meet your company at the place your voucher gives, or call the number on it.
  3. Hand the car back where the voucher says, then head up to Departures.
Need help through the airport? Assistance is free; request it at least 48 hours before your flight. The Sala Amica room is on the ground floor.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car at Trapani Airport?

Not on the cars shown here. Each car still holds a deposit, and the amount is listed before you pay.

If a card will hold the deposit, bring the physical card, in the main driver’s name and with raised details. A friend’s card or a phone wallet will not do.

Only 15 to 20% of the rent is paid online; the balance goes to the company at pickup. Check the deposit again if you change the cover level.

Road rules for your first drive from Trapani Airport

Drive on the right and follow the posted limits. Take time to learn the car before the first roundabout.

Usual speed limits

Signs aside: 50 km/h in towns, 90 on secondary roads, 110 on main roads, 130 on motorways; in the wet, 110 and 90.

Alcohol and new drivers

The limit is 0.5 g/l of blood alcohol. It falls to zero for anyone under 21 or with less than three years of driving.

No phone in your hand

Hand-held phones are banned while driving. Use hands-free that needs no touching, and set the route first.

Children in the car

Anyone under 1.5 metres tall travels in an approved child seat suited to their weight. Book seats with the car and check the fitting.

In an emergency dial 112, or 118 for an ambulance and 115 for fire. Tell the rental company about any damage at once.

Paved roads only in the west

The rental allows paved public roads only, so leave dirt tracks to beaches and reserves alone.

An SUV or extra cover does not change that. Road closures and local signs apply to hire cars too.

Island ferries and travel abroad

Ask the company before you take the car outside Italy. The terms do not cover ferries either way.

Ferries leave Trapani port for the Egadi islands and Pantelleria. Get the company’s agreement before you put the car on one.

Can you return a Trapani Airport car at Palermo Airport?

Yes, some cars can end their hire at Palermo Airport. Set it as the return when you search to see which ones.

Set the return

Choose Palermo Airport for drop-off and Birgi for pickup.

Check for a charge

Some cars add a drop-off charge, others add nothing.

Allow for the drive

Palermo Airport is about 1 h 45 min east by motorway.

Fly home from Palermo Airport and you can skip the drive back to Birgi. Ask the company where to leave the car there.

Trapani Airport rental prices by month

A week from the 15th of each month, collected and returned at Birgi. Each bar is a typical daily price.

N/A means no cars are listed yet for that month.

Hire is charged in whole days from your pickup time. Bringing the car back late counts as another day.

Planning for passengers and luggage

Pick the car by the number of seats and bags, then add extras and drivers to the booking.

Four seats or five

The smallest cars may seat only four. Count everyone, including children, before you choose.

Vans for nine

Nine-seat vans suit bigger groups. Check the luggage space with all seats in use.

Child seats

Add the right seat for each child in the booking and check it is fitted at pickup.

Extra drivers

Name each driver in the booking. They must meet the car’s age and licence rules.

Small pets may travel in a carrier that stays closed for the whole trip.

What cover comes with car rental at Trapani Airport?

Many cars here start with Basic cover, which leaves an excess. On many of them a paid upgrade takes it away.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Basic as standard. Each car shown includes Basic damage cover, with an excess and a deposit still in place.

Full removes the excess. On many cars, paying for Full takes the excess to zero and lowers the deposit.

No upgrade on some. Some cars offer only Minimum and Basic, with the same deposit either way.

Always excluded. Wheels, underside, windscreen and interior fall outside standard cover. Neglect voids it.

A car hire excess is the most you pay towards damage the cover includes, so a lower one costs more up front. Report any accident to the company and the police unless the company agrees otherwise.

What to bring to the handover

Two documents: the original licence from home and an International Driving Permit, in date until you return.

Licence and IDP

Italian rental terms require both documents. A scan or photo of your licence will be refused.

Age limits

Each car has its own minimum age and licence years. Check them for every driver before booking.

Bringing the car back to Birgi

Leave room in your plans for the inspection before you check in.

Fuel to match

  • Return it with the fuel you received. Any shortfall is charged at the company’s rate.

Clean enough to inspect

  • If dirt hides the paintwork, a washing charge is added.

Fuel, parking, tolls and fines during the hire are yours to pay.

Changing or cancelling the booking

Find your cancellation deadline before changing flights.

When to cancel

Standard cars: a week’s notice. Luxury cars and convertibles: thirty days. With the short-notice option: one day. Cancel later, or fail to turn up, and the advance is kept.

Refunds

Send the voucher to support. Money due comes back within fourteen days of the request, less a 6% fee on the advance.

For other dates or another car, cancel and rebook. Ask the company in advance if you want to keep the car longer.
