Six cars, each collected and returned at Fontanarossa after a week. Look at the deposit and cover as well as the weekly total.

Car classes at Catania Airport

Each class price assumes pickup and drop-off at Fontanarossa, on the east side of Sicily. Manual and automatic cars are both offered, so filter for the gearbox you want.

Vans with up to nine seats appear in some weeks. Not quoted means no car of that class was offered for these dates. Seven- and nine-seaters count as vans, not Standard.

Where do you pick up your car at Catania Airport?

The car comes from a local Sicilian company. Its name, its phone number and where it meets you are all on the voucher.

Save the voucher offline

Download it before you fly. It names the company, the meeting point and its phone number, and you may have no data on landing.

Keep your phone switched on

Book with a number that works abroad, with its country code. If your flight is delayed, let the company know as soon as you can.

Check the car before leaving

Go round the bodywork with the company and photograph any marks. Check the fuel gauge and that booked extras such as child seats are fitted.

Etna’s ash can close Catania Airport for a time. If your flight moves to another airport, call the company; the booking does not move with it.

Catania Airport guide: terminals, parking and leaving by car

What Fontanarossa offers on arrival, how its car parks work, and a few road tips for the first miles in your hire car.

Services in Terminal A

  • Cash machines on the land side of Arrivals, and one more airside in Departures.
  • Currency exchange in the Arrivals hall, open 7.30am to 8.30pm every day.
  • Free Wi-Fi in every part of the building.
  • Two lounges the Angelo D’Arrigo VIP Lounge by gates 5 and 6, and the ITA Airways lounge.
  • No left luggage the airport has no storage, so keep your bags with you.

Parking and drop-off

  • P1Short stay
  • P3Short stay
  • P4Low-cost long stay
  • P5Short stay
  • P6Long stay

Short-stay car parks P1, P3 and P5 are free for the first 15 minutes.

P4 is a multi-storey car park about 200 metres from Terminal A; P6 is the other long-stay option.

  • Pay at the machines before going back to your car, then exit within 10 minutes.
  • Open all day, every day but unsupervised, so leave nothing on show.
  • Staying over 12 hours? A daily penalty applies in P1 and P3, so use a long-stay car park.

Collecting and returning your car

  1. Arrivals is downstairs on the ground floor of Terminal A; Departures is on the first floor.
  2. Look for your company at the spot named on the voucher; ring its number if nobody is there.
  3. Drop the car off as the voucher explains, then check which terminal your flight uses.
Need help moving around? Assistance is free, but ask for it in your flight booking at least 48 hours before you fly.

Driving away from Catania Airport

  1. Going into Catania? The old centre around Teatro Massimo Bellini is a camera zone for residents and permit holders.
  2. Heading up Etna? Snow and ice can close the road to Rifugio Sapienza, so check before you set off.
  3. Parking in the city? Blue-line street bays are paid on working days in the daytime; read the sign at each one.
Driving north to Taormina? The A18 motorway from Catania towards Messina has tolls, so budget for them on top of the rental price.

Can you hire a car at Catania Airport without a credit card?

Yes, none of the cars shown asks for a credit card. Every car still holds a deposit, so check the amount and how it can be paid.

If you pay the deposit by card, it must be the main driver’s own physical card with embossed details. A phone wallet or a passenger’s card will not do.

You pay 15 to 20% when you book; the rest goes to the company at Fontanarossa by the methods your car lists. Raising the cover can change the deposit, so check it again before you pay.

How far is Catania Airport from Taormina?

Taormina is about 55 minutes north of Fontanarossa by motorway on clear roads. Times run from the airport and leave out stops and parking.

Agrigento ends at the Valley of the Temples on the south coast. Palermo city centre is about 2 h 45 min away across the island.

Road rules for your first drive from Catania Airport

Traffic in Sicily keeps right. Learn the lights, wipers and gears while still parked at Fontanarossa.

Know the speed limits

Unless signs say otherwise: 50 km/h in towns, 90 on minor roads, 110 on main roads and 130 on motorways. Rain lowers the last two to 90 and 110.

Drink-drive limit

The limit is 0.5 g/l. Drivers under 21, and anyone in their first three years of driving, must not drink at all before driving.

Phones off while moving

You may not hold a phone or tablet at the wheel. Hands-free is allowed; set the sat nav before you pull away.

Belts and child seats

Belts for all, front and back. A child under 1.5 metres needs an approved child seat suited to their weight; add one to the booking.

Emergency number 112 works across Italy; ambulance is 118 and fire 115. Let the rental firm know about any damage right away.

Paved roads only, Etna included

The rental terms allow paved public roads only, so lava tracks and private roads on Etna are off limits.

A bigger car or extra cover does not change the road rule, and the rental terms make no exception for mountain tracks.

Ferries and trips off the island

Ask the company before any trip outside Italy. The terms do not say whether the car may go on a ferry.

Get the company’s agreement before you buy a ferry ticket to the mainland or another island.

Can you return a Catania Airport car at Palermo Airport?

Yes, some cars can be dropped at Palermo Airport across the island. Choose both airports when you search to see which.

Pick both airports

Set Catania Airport for pickup and Palermo Airport for the return before you compare.

Read the full total

The price shown is the whole hire, any one-way cost included, so compare totals.

Plan the long drive

Allow about 3 h 30 min to Palermo Airport, plus fuel and breaks.

Ask the company where to hand the car back at Palermo Airport. A return at a port, station or hotel needs a separate quote.

Catania Airport car hire prices through the year

Each bar is a seven-day hire collected and returned at Fontanarossa. Use it to spot the cheaper months before you search.

N/A means no car was offered for that month yet.

You pay for at least one full day, and going past the return time adds another day. Times, extras and cover all move the price.

Families, groups and extra drivers

Count people and bags before you choose a car. Add child seats and any second driver to the booking first.

Seats on the small cars

Small cars here have four or five seats. Read the seat count on the listing before you book for a family.

Book child seats early

Pick a seat matched to each child’s size when you book, then check the fitting before you leave Fontanarossa.

Nine seats for a group

Some weeks offer vans with up to nine seats. Check the boot still takes your cases with every seat in use.

Name every driver

Each extra driver goes in the booking and must meet the car’s age and licence rules. A passenger cannot just take over.

A small pet may travel if it stays in a carrier for the whole trip.

What does car rental insurance cover at Catania Airport?

Cover differs from car to car here. Check the excess and the deposit at each level, not just the price.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Starting at Minimum. Some cars start with third-party cover only. On some of them, a paid Full level cuts the deposit and removes the excess.

Full already included. Some cars include Full cover with no excess in the price shown. They still hold a deposit.

Two levels only. Some cars offer just Minimum and Basic, with the same deposit and excess at both, so no upgrade lowers either.

Parts left out. Standard cover excludes wheels, underside, windscreen and interior. Neglect or deliberate damage voids any cover.

The excess is the most you pay for damage the cover includes, and what the excess covers changes with each level. Report any accident to the company at once; a police report is needed unless the company waives it.

Licence and documents to bring

Pack the original licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit, each in date for the whole hire.

Licence plus permit

The Italy rental terms ask for both. Copies and phone images of a licence are not accepted at the handover.

Age and experience

Minimum age and years with a licence are set car by car. A driver below either limit can be turned away at pickup.

Returning the car at Catania Airport

Leave time for the inspection and the walk to your terminal. Check the voucher for where the return happens.

Fuel level

  • Match the fuel gauge to the level at handover. The company bills any gap at its own price.

Clean enough to check

  • If dirt hides the bodywork, you pay for a wash before it is inspected.

You cover parking, motorway tolls and any fines. A camera fine follows the number plate to you as the renter, even after the trip.

Cancelling or changing your booking

Note the cancellation deadline on your voucher before you change flights.

Notice you must give

Standard cars need a week’s notice, luxury cars and convertibles thirty days, and bookings with the short-notice option one day. After that, or a no-show, the advance is kept.

How a refund works

Cancel by sending support your voucher. Money owed is repaid within a fortnight of asking, minus a 6% charge on the advance.

Swapping car or dates means a fresh booking after you cancel. For extra days, get the company’s agreement while the hire is still running.

Catania Airport car hire questions

Is it best to rent a car at Catania Airport?

For eastern Sicily it is the simplest start: every car here is collected and returned at the airport, and Taormina and Siracusa are under an hour away.

Can I pick up a car at Catania Airport at night?

Some cars can be collected at 03:00, some cost more then and some are not offered. Enter your real flight times when you search.

Do I need a credit card for the deposit?

Not on the cars shown. The card or method you use must still be the main driver’s own, and every car holds a deposit.

What should I avoid when renting a car in Catania?

Driving into the camera-controlled old centre without a permit, using unpaved Etna tracks, and returning with less fuel than at pickup.

Is the Palermo Airport return more expensive?

Compare the full totals. The price for a Palermo Airport return already includes any one-way cost, so set it beside a return at Catania Airport.
