Car hire at Palermo Airport

Car rental at Palermo Airport from local companies. The cars shown need no credit card, and each shows its deposit and cover first.

Cheap car rental at Palermo Airport for a week

The six cheapest models handed over and taken back at the airport. Check each deposit as well as the price.

Which size of car suits a Palermo arrival?

The airport sits at Punta Raisi on the north coast of Sicily, west of the city. Every class price here is for a car collected and returned there.

Seven-seat cars and nine-seat vans join the list in some weeks. Not quoted means no car of that class was listed. Seven- and nine-seaters count as vans, not Standard.

How do you meet your rental company at Palermo Airport?

Local companies hand over the cars booked here. Your voucher shows the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Know the meeting point

Read the voucher before landing. It names the company and its phone number and says exactly where it meets you.

Call if you are delayed

Give a mobile number with its country code. If the flight runs late, ring the company so it knows when to expect you.

Allow time for handover

Paperwork, the deposit and a walk round the car take a while. Check fuel, damage marks and any extras before you drive off.

  2. Look for the meeting point printed on your voucher, or phone the company if you cannot see it.
  3. Hand back the car at the place the voucher names, then head up one floor to Departures.

Driving away from Palermo Airport

  1. Join the A29 east for Palermo and the A19, or west towards Castellammare and Trapani.
  2. Old centre ahead? The historic centre is a camera ZTL; do not enter without a day pass for the car’s plate.
  3. Headlights outside towns Dipped beams stay on beyond built-up areas unless the car has approved daytime lights.
Staying inside the ZTL? Hotels within the zone can register a guest’s car for a temporary pass, so ask yours before you arrive.

Can you rent a car at Palermo Airport without a credit card?

On the cars shown, yes: none of them asks for a credit card. A deposit is still held on every car, and the amount varies.

If the deposit goes on a card, it must belong to the main driver, with the name and numbers raised on it. You show it in person; a photo or phone wallet will not do.

Higher cover can shrink the deposit, so compare the figures again after you change the level.

Sicilian road rules for the first drive

Traffic keeps to the right in Sicily. Adjust the seat and mirrors and set the sat nav before you join the motorway.

Posted limits come first

Unsigned limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 outside, 110 on main roads and 130 on motorways. Rain cuts the two fastest to 110 and 90.

Zero alcohol for new drivers

The usual limit is 0.5 g/l. If you are under 21 or passed your test less than three years ago, it is zero.

Hands-free only

Holding a phone at the wheel is banned. A hands-free set is fine if you do not need to touch the phone.

Warning triangle and vest

Find both before you go. After a breakdown, wear the vest and place the triangle well behind the car.

Call 112 in an emergency, 118 for an ambulance and 115 for fire. Report any damage to the rental company at once.

Stay on paved public roads

Your rental only allows paved public roads. Dirt tracks to beaches or nature reserves are not covered.

That rule holds whatever the car, the cover or the sat nav says. Closures and road notices also apply to you.

Ferries and travel beyond Italy

Tell the company before any trip outside Italy. The terms say nothing either way about ferries.

Planning a ferry? Clear the crossing with the company before you buy a ticket.

Can you return a Palermo Airport car at another airport?

Yes, some cars can be dropped at Catania Airport or Trapani Airport. Search with the return airport set to see which cars and what they cost.

Choose the return airport

Pick Catania Airport or Trapani Airport as the drop-off when you search.

Compare the totals

Some Trapani returns add a drop-off charge and some do not.

Ask where to return

Get the drop-off point from the company before your last day.

Catania Airport is about 3 h 30 min east across the island. Trapani Airport lies to the west along the A29, handy if you fly home from Birgi.

Palermo Airport rental prices month by month

Each bar starts a seven-day hire mid-month, with pickup and return at Punta Raisi. It shows a typical day, not a fixed rate.

N/A marks a month with no cars listed yet.

The minimum hire is 24 hours, and a late return adds a whole extra day. Ask the company before you keep the car longer.

Room for everyone and their bags

Pick the car by seats and luggage, then add child seats and extra drivers in the booking.

Seven seats or more

Some cars here seat seven, and vans seat nine. Check the boot space with every seat in use before you book one.

Seats for small children

Book one seat per child, sized to them, and look at how it is fitted before the drive into the city.

Add second drivers

Only drivers named in the booking may drive. Each must meet the car’s minimum age and years with a licence.

Similar model rule

The car may be the model shown or a similar one. If one feature matters, check it before you pay.

A small pet can come along if it stays in a carrier for the whole journey.

How does rental cover work at Palermo Airport?

Many cars here start with Basic cover, which still leaves an excess. Paying for a higher level changes the figures in different ways.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Basic to begin with. With Basic damage cover you still carry an excess and a deposit.

Full Plus on some cars. Some cars offer a top level with no deposit and no excess, at an extra cost.

Full is not the same everywhere. On some cars Full removes the excess; on others it only lowers it.

What standard cover leaves out. Wheels, underside, glass and the interior. Neglect and deliberate damage void every level.

Each of the cover levels sets its own deposit and excess on the same car. If you have an accident, phone the company first; a police report is also required unless the company says it is not.

Documents for collecting the car

Carry your full national licence together with an International Driving Permit, both originals and in date.

Both licences needed

The rental terms in Italy require the permit as well as your licence. Digital copies are refused at pickup.

Minimum age rules

Age and years of driving are set car by car. A driver who falls short can be turned away.

Returning the car before your flight

Plan the return around the inspection and getting to Departures on the first floor.

Same fuel as pickup

  • Fill up to the level you received. A shortfall is charged by the company; extra is not refunded.

Ready for inspection

  • A car too dirty to check costs you a wash before the company looks it over.

Tolls, parking and traffic fines are your cost. A ZTL camera fine is yours as the renter, even if it arrives after the trip.

If your plans change before pickup

Check which cancellation deadline applies to your booking.

Deadlines to cancel

Seven days ahead for standard cars, thirty for luxury cars and convertibles, or a single day if you paid for short notice. Miss that point or the pickup and the advance is gone.

Getting money back

Email your voucher to support to cancel. Refunds come within fourteen days of the request, minus 6% of the advance.

New dates or a different car mean cancelling and booking again. Extra days need the company’s agreement before the return time.
