Car hire in Essaouira

Car rental in Essaouira, brought to your hotel or riad by local companies. Most cars need no deposit, and none asks for a credit card.

Cheap car rental in Essaouira

Small cars, family cars and SUVs

Most Essaouira cars are small economy models, with a smaller choice of SUVs and a few people carriers. Tile prices start from the cheapest car in each class for the week above, though a typical delivered car costs over €59 a day.

The rental conditions are the same everywhere in Morocco, so a car delivered here follows the national rules; deposits and cover still vary by car.

How does pickup work in Essaouira?

Every Essaouira car is delivered to the address you give, whether a hotel, a riad or a flat.

Delivery to your door

Type the hotel, riad or flat address when booking. Most deliveries carry a charge that is already inside the price; some have none.

Flying into Marrakech

Collect the car at Marrakech Airport instead and drive over: the road to Essaouira takes about two hours forty-five minutes.

Arranging the handover

The voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number. Keep your own phone on from the day before so the company can reach you.

Essaouira Airport is listed as a handover place, but no car is offered there, so plan on delivery.

Can you rent a car in Essaouira without a credit card?

No Essaouira car on offer asks for a credit card, and most need no deposit. Each car still lists its own rules.

Cash depositOn some cars
15 to 20%Paid at booking

The balance is paid to the company on delivery, by the methods that car accepts. A zero deposit does not by itself mean you can pay the balance in cash.

Most cars in Marrakech and Agadir need no credit card either, which helps on a one-way trip.

To keep your card completely free, pick a car with no deposit.

How long is the drive from Essaouira to Marrakech?

Marrakech is about two hours forty-five minutes inland on the RN8. Agadir and Taghazout are a similar time down the coast.

Closer to Essaouira: Sidi Kaouki, about 25 min.

Taghazout and Agadir follow the RN1 and suit a trip south.

The runs to El Jadida and Casablanca join the A1 motorway, and Taroudant uses the A3 for part of the way; the drives to Marrakech, Agadir and Taghazout are mostly on national roads.

Main roads out of town

Essaouira is linked by national roads, not motorways: the RN8 to Marrakech and the RN1 along the coast.

  • The A3 motorway near Marrakech and the A1 towards El Jadida are tolled; toll lanes take cash, bank cards and the Jawaz tag.
  • The drive times assume clear roads, so leave a margin for traffic and stops.

You pay for fuel, parking, tolls and any fines yourself during the rental.

Safe driving on the Atlantic coast

Stay on tarmac

Only paved public roads are allowed. Sandy tracks to beaches and dunes are off limits for every car, four-wheel-drive included.

After dark

UK travel advice says poor lighting can make night driving dangerous, with pedestrians and animals on the road. Finish a Marrakech run in daylight.

Emergency calls

UK travel advice gives 190 for the police and 150 for ambulance and fire. Save the rental company’s number from the voucher as well.

Reporting damage

After an accident covered by the insurance, ring the company at once and get a police report, unless it says no. Skip either and cover can lapse.

Morocco only

The car cannot cross any border from Morocco, and no cross-border option is offered, so plan the whole trip inside the country.

Can you return the car in Agadir or Marrakech?

Yes, and in Casablanca. Set the return city in the search; every one-way carries an extra charge, which is in the price shown.

  • Some cars can go back at Marrakech or Casablanca Airport, which suits a flight out after the coast.

Settle the return place at booking. Changing it mid-trip needs the company’s agreement first.

Daily prices month by month in Essaouira

The bars show a typical daily price for seven-day hires that start on the 15th, delivery included.

Essaouira week-long hires from the 15th of every month. A grey N/A bar marks a month with no prices; its height means nothing.

No car carries a price from April onwards, so spring and summer trips need a fresh look nearer the date.

Each rental day is 24 hours, and even a short overrun is charged as a full day.

Gearboxes, big groups and children

Manual or automatic

Essaouira’s list is split fairly evenly between manual and automatic cars. The gearbox is stated on every offer.

Seven seats

A few seven-seat cars are offered, people carriers among them. Check the seats and the boot with your luggage in mind.

Children

Infant carriers, child seats and boosters appear on the national extras list; check the offer and request one with the booking.

Extra driver

Where offered, a second named driver is an extra priced on the offer and has to clear the same age and licence bar as you.

Car hire cover in Essaouira

Cover levels and the deposit at each level are shown on the car. Compare the two side by side.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Four possible levels. The ladder climbs from Minimum to Full Coverage Plus, though a given car may not show every rung.

Not covered as standard. Standard insurance excludes damage to the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior.

Ways to lose cover. Deliberate damage through vandalism or neglect makes the insurance invalid.

Optional protection. Theft protection and personal accident insurance are on Morocco’s extras list too.

Each car lists its levels, and what the excess covers changes from one to the next.

What documents do you bring to the handover?

The licence from your own country, in the original, with Latin lettering and valid until at least the return. No photocopies or digital licences.

International permit

Licences that only count at home should travel with an International Driving Permit; UK travel advice says UK licence holders need the 1968 version.

Age rules

Each car sets its own minimum age and years held, and similar cars can differ. Check before paying.

Your passport and booking voucher are needed too when you sign the contract.

Fuel, sand and the return

Fuel

  • Return with the same amount of fuel as at delivery; any shortfall is charged at the company’s rate.

Sand and dirt

  • If sand or dirt stops the company inspecting the car, you pay for a wash.

Want more days? Ask the company before your booked return time.

Cancellation and refunds

A confirmed booking cannot be edited; you cancel and book again within the deadline.

Deadlines

Give a week’s notice for an everyday car or 30 days for a luxury model or convertible; the short-notice option shortens that to one day. Miss the window, or the delivery, and the advance is forfeited.

Refunds

Email customer support with your voucher. The refund is paid within fourteen days of the request, less a 6% payment charge on the advance.
