Each of these six is priced for a full week starting and ending at the terminal. Some need no credit card, and the deposit sits under each car.

From small runabouts to minibuses

Tiles show the cheapest car in each class for the same week as the deals; a typical car picked up and returned at the airport costs about €37 a day.

Flying further south another time? Car hire across Greece can also start at an airport or town closer to your route.

Where do you meet your car at Thessaloniki Airport?

Your voucher tells you where to meet the company and which number to ring. The rental desks in the arrivals hall are not where these cars are handed over.

Voucher in hand

The voucher lists the company, the meeting spot and a contact. Save a copy on your phone before take-off.

Paperwork at the handover

Allow time for the licence check, the deposit and a walk round the car. Note any marks on the condition report first.

Reachable by phone

The company may phone or text from the day before pickup, so the booking’s number needs its country code and must stay switched on.

The city time ends at the White Tower. Staying in town first? Car hire in Thessaloniki also comes to a city address, so the rental can start on the day you leave.

Rules of the road in northern Greece

The same national rules apply from the airport car park to the mountain roads. These are the ones to know first.

Speed outside towns

Outside towns it is 90 km/h, and up to 130 km/h on motorways. Towns are 30 km/h, or 50 km/h on certain multi-lane streets.

Flashing yellow light

Slow down, take extra care and give way to pedestrians and other vehicles. Running a yellow light can bring a fine.

No hand-held phone

Only hands-free calls are allowed at the wheel. Set the phone in a holder before you leave the car park.

After an accident

Phone the company before anything else, then get a police report unless it says one is not needed. Skip both and the insurance may not pay.

Greek law wants a triangle, a first-aid kit and an extinguisher in each car, so look for all three before leaving the car park.

Toll booths, fuel, parking and fines are all on your account. Emergency services answer on 112.

Stay on paved roads

Every rental car in Greece is limited to paved public roads, including beach roads on Kassandra and Sithonia.

Unpaved tracks are off limits whatever the cover, and the rental conditions name no exceptions.

No trips into neighbouring countries

The car cannot cross into Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania or Turkey, and none can be returned there.

Driving a rental car over any national border is not allowed. Taking it on a ferry to an island needs customer support’s agreement before you complete the booking.

Can you return the car at Athens Airport?

Some cars collected here can end at Athens Airport. The drop-off charge is already inside the total.

Set the return airport

Choose Athens Airport as the return place before you compare. A search without it leaves out the one-way charge.

Plan the long drive

Allow about 6 h 30 min on the motorway with clear roads, plus toll stops, fuel and the return inspection.

Compare a round trip

The drop-off charge can outweigh a lower day rate, so price the same dates with a return here as well.

It works the other way too: cars from Athens Airport can be returned here.

Thessaloniki Airport prices through the year

One bar per month: the lowest day rate for a week-long rental beginning and ending at Thessaloniki Airport. Use it to spot cheaper months.

N/A: no Thessaloniki Airport cars are listed yet for that month.

Days are counted in 24-hour blocks, so returning later in the day than you collected adds a day. Extending in Halkidiki? Clear it with the company first.

Families, groups and extra drivers

Before you pay, make sure the car fits everyone and every driver is named. Add any extras to the booking itself.

Second driver

Only drivers named on the booking may drive. Each must meet the age and years-licensed rule shown for that car.

Seats for children

Book a child seat or booster for each child and check the fit before you drive to Halkidiki.

Luggage and passengers

Beach gear and cases take room, so compare the boot space with every seat in use before you choose.

Travelling with a pet

A small pet can ride along if it stays in its carrier from start to finish.

How much excess do you pay after damage?

It depends on the car and the cover level you choose. Deposit and excess are separate figures, and each level changes them differently.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

No deposit, still an excess. Some no-deposit cars carry an excess under Basic. Full Coverage leaves it the same, and only Full Coverage Plus removes it.

Card cars with a lower hold. On some cars that need a credit card, paid Full Coverage removes the excess but still holds a smaller deposit.

Minimum first. A few low-priced cars start on Minimum (TPL). Adding Basic brings their deposit and excess down to small amounts.

Vans with a higher excess. On some larger vans the excess under Basic is higher than the deposit held at pickup.

Standard insurance stops short of the wheels, the underbody, the windscreen and the interior. Each level sets its own damage cover and excess.

Vandalism or neglect by the driver makes the insurance invalid.

Documents to bring for the handover

Bring the original licence with an expiry date after your return day; photocopies and phone images are refused.

IDP with your licence

Carry an International Driving Permit with your licence. Some companies may turn you away without one.

Minimum age

The youngest driver age and licence years are fixed car by car, so two similar models can differ.

Drivers with a UK photocard licence may drive in Greece on it, but read the car’s conditions in case the company wants an IDP as well.

Bringing the car back in good order

Plan the return around fuel and a quick check of the car.

Same fuel as at pickup

  • Leave the tank where you found it. A low gauge is topped up at the company’s price; overfilling is not paid back.

Inspection

  • Beach sand and dust count too: if the car cannot be checked, its wash is billed to you.

Fill up before the airport and keep the receipt until the deposit is released.

Cancellation and refund rules

To change anything, you cancel and rebook under the standard rules.

Deadlines

Ordinary cars need a week’s notice, luxury cars and convertibles thirty days. Where you added the 24-hour cancellation option, a day is enough.

Refund

Attach your voucher when you ask. The advance is back in two weeks at most, less a 6% payment service fee; missing the pickup forfeits it.

Car hire at Thessaloniki Airport: your questions

Can I cancel soon after booking?

Yes. In the first 24 hours after the booking is confirmed and the advance paid, you or the company can cancel; the advance comes back less the 6% payment fee.

Is Thessaloniki Airport open at night?

Can I drive to Meteora from the airport?

Yes. Kalambaka, the town below the monasteries, is reached on paved public roads all the way, so the trip stays within the rental rules.

Is there a car for seven or more people?

Yes, vans with up to 9 seats can be booked. Each listing shows its seat count under the price.

Can I get an automatic at Thessaloniki Airport?

Yes, automatics are offered alongside manuals. Filter by gearbox and check the line on each car, as the photo does not confirm it.
