Rent a car in Croatia with your debit card where it is accepted, at an airport or delivered in town. Each car shows its deposit before you book.

Where can you start your journey?

How will you pay?

The advance

Reserving online costs 15 to 20% of the rental. That comes off what you owe later; it is not a refundable deposit.

The remaining rent

On pickup day, the hire balance goes straight to your Croatian company. Some cars take cash for it; others need a card.

Your debit card

Paying by debit? Bring a physical card in the main driver’s name, embossed with their details, to collect the car.

The payment details

The voucher and booking list deposit and balance methods. Cash for the hire does not mean cash for the deposit.

How much security is needed?

Lower security

In Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Zadar, some cars without a card rule hold up to three hundred euros, paid apart from the rent.

Higher security

The same places also have such cars holding more than three hundred euros. Read the figure; debit-friendly is not always low.

After returning

Some Croatian companies keep the deposit for thirty to forty-five days. Later tolls or fines, plus fine fees, can come out of it.

Car hire insurance for your Croatian trip

Decide what share of accident damage you are happy to carry, next to the payment you need.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)
  • Basic’s CDW caps collision costs; standard cover leaves out windscreen, wheels, interior and underside. Super CDW under Full keeps the Basic excess or lowers it, by car.
  • In Croatia, deliberate damage, vandalism and careless use are not insured, and buying more cover does not change that.
  • Plus is offered on some cars at all five Croatian airports. It removes your share of accident damage; check price and availability per car.
  • At Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Pula airports the cheapest cars need a credit card, and cars with no card rule cost more a day.
  • More cover can lower the deposit on some Dubrovnik cars, while some Split cars hold none at any level. Deposit and excess can match; only excess sets your damage share.
If damage happens

Ring your company immediately after an insured incident and have the police write it up, unless the company agrees otherwise. If you do not, cover ends and the cost is all yours.

Which offers insist on credit?

Airport alternatives

Some airport cars in Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Pula need a credit card for the deposit. The card filter hides them.

Credit-only conditions

Where credit is a must, the named driver shows their own embossed credit card. Debit works only if the booking says so.

Finding a suitable booking

  1. Choose collection

Pick your Croatian pickup point, return and travel times. Enter the driver’s real age and how many years they have driven.

  2. Filter the offers

Switch on No credit card. Look inside a car’s listing for its deposit and cover options; do not choose by model alone.

  3. Save the voucher

Book once the terms suit your trip. Keep the email with the local company’s contacts for pickup and questions.

Payment eligibility versus security

No credit card

This tells you which payments your car accepts. You can avoid credit and still leave a deposit, so it says nothing about the amount.

No deposit

This one removes the deposit. Some Croatian no-deposit cars have no credit card rule either. Check both on your car.

Questions before you reserve

Where in Croatia can I leave cash as security?

Some Split town pickup cars and Zagreb delivered cars take a cash deposit. Dubrovnik and Zadar do not; use an accepted card or pick a no-deposit car.

What driving documents do these Croatian bookings require?

Show the licence itself when you collect, written in Latin script and valid for your whole booking; a phone image or photocopy will not do. With a home-only licence, an IDP is strongly recommended.

Does paying by debit change the driver eligibility rules?

No. Paying another way does not relax the driver rules. If your age or years of driving fall short of the car’s terms, the company can refuse the handover. A no-deposit car does not relax them either.

How much notice is needed to cancel a Croatian reservation?

Ordinary bookings: seven days before pickup; luxury or convertibles: thirty days; with the cancellation extra, twenty-four hours. Late changes, late cancellations and unarranged missed pickups lose the prepayment. Refunds take at most fourteen days, with six euros per hundred kept.

Will collecting outside normal hours affect the rental total?

It can. Companies may charge for out-of-hours pickup or return, and the quote for your times includes it; a late handover may cost more than daytime.
