Car hire in Split

Compare local car rental companies at Split Airport and in Split, with no-deposit and no-credit-card options, plus insurance choices shown before booking.

Cheap car rental for Split at the airport

Choose your car size

Tiles show the cheapest car in each class for the same week as the deals; a typical car here costs about €53 a day, so most cars cost more a day than the cheapest deals. Choose the size and gearbox your party needs.

Where can you collect your car?

Collect at Split Airport, have the car delivered to your address or pick it up in town. Trogir is about 10 minutes from the airport and Split’s Riva about 30.

Airport pickup

Meet the company at the airport point named on your voucher and save its phone number. Some airport cars have no handover charge.

City delivery

Choose city delivery and enter your Split address. Some delivered cars have no delivery charge or need no credit card; check the deposit on the car.

Town pickup

Town pickups in Split hold a deposit, which can be paid in cash. The pickup address is on your voucher, so save it before you travel.

Airport collection suits a first drive straight to Trogir or along the coast. Enter your real pickup and return times; night charges can differ between the two. Add your phone number with the country code, as the company needs to reach you from the day before pickup until the car is back.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Split?

Many cars here have no credit-card requirement. No-deposit cars are collected at the airport; delivered cars and town pickups still hold a deposit.

Separate payment choices. A car with no credit card rule may still need a deposit. Paying the deposit in cash does not mean the rest of the hire can be paid in cash too, so read both payment lines on the car.

Your own physical card. If a credit card is needed, the main driver brings their own physical card with their details embossed. A debit card works only where the booking says so, on the same rules.

You pay 15 to 20% when you book and the rest at pickup, by the methods your car accepts. How you pay the advance does not decide how you pay the balance or the deposit.

Some companies keep the deposit for 30 to 45 days after the car is back, so a return at Split Airport does not mean an instant release. Unpaid tolls or fines can be charged later, with an admin fee on fines.

A rental is charged by the 24 hours, so even a few hours count as a day, and Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon is two days. Enter both times before comparing totals.

How long are the drives from Split Airport?

These journeys start at the airport, before stops or summer traffic. Use them to plan the first drive and choose between a nearby outing and a longer day away.

Trogir is the shortest of these drives from the airport. Split’s Riva and ferry port are separate destinations, so allow the longer time when you are heading for a ferry. If you collect in town or have the car delivered, your journey starts somewhere else, so these airport times are not door-to-door estimates from your accommodation.

For a park visit, the drive from Split Airport to Lozovac, an approach to Krka National Park, is 58.7 km and about an hour. Skradin is a separate destination, 63.7 km and also about an hour away. Choose your arrival point before setting off, as these are two different places.

Plitvice Lakes Entrance 1 is 231.1 km from Split Airport, about 3 h 15 min each way before breaks. That makes it a much longer outing than the nearby coast. Its return drive also needs a place in the day’s plan. Split rentals include both unlimited-distance cars and cars with a daily kilometre cap, so check that condition before committing to a long round trip.

Where can you park in Split?

Street parking zones I and II have different weekday hours. Read the sign for the place where you leave the car and check the current tariff.

  • Zone I: charged Monday to Friday from 06:30 to 21:30 and Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00. The SMS number is 708211; Sundays are free in this zone.
  • Zone II: charged Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00 and Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00. The SMS number is 708212; Sundays are free in this zone.

The street-parking tariff changes between May to September and October to April. Check the zone and season together: the rate for one area is not necessarily the rate for the street beside it. Check the current street tariff before you leave the car.

Text the registration number to the number for the correct zone, or use the parking operator’s app. Do not rely solely on a foreign SIM for payment: keep an alternative available and check that the payment has been accepted before leaving the car. The app is available for both of these street zones.

The charging hours above describe street parking in zones I and II. They should not be applied to the airport car parks or treated as a general promise of free parking across Split on Sundays. Parking charges and parking fines during your rental remain your responsibility.

Can you take the car to Hvar or Brač?

Before finalising your reservation, contact customer support to arrange taking the car on an island ferry. Split’s booking search has no ferry checkbox.

Hvar: Stari Grad

The Split to Stari Grad car ferry, line 635, takes 120 minutes. Vehicle reservations are available; a reserved ticket holds a place on the particular departure you book. Check the sailing time before arranging your drive.

Brač: Supetar

The Split to Supetar car ferry, line 631, takes 50 minutes. A ticket is valid for departures on its printed date, subject to space for the vehicle. Boarding is not a reservation for a particular departure time.

When to arrive

For a reserved departure, reach the quay at least 45 minutes before sailing. Where there is no reservation, vehicles board in arrival order. Allow one or two hours before departure and include the drive to the port separately.

Before you know the plate

If the registration number is not yet known, enter RENTAL in Jadrolinija’s online plate field. Keep the vehicle registration certificate available for the ticket details. This ticket entry does not replace the rental company’s agreement to ferry travel.

Choose a vehicle ferry for an island trip with your Split rental. Ship and high-speed passenger services do not carry cars. A passenger sailing to Hvar is therefore not interchangeable with the car ferry to Stari Grad, even if both suit the same island visit. Confirm the vehicle route before matching the sailing to your pickup time.

Plan the island stop around the port printed on the vehicle ticket. The Hvar crossing arrives at Stari Grad, while the Brač crossing arrives at Supetar. Neither crossing time includes your onward drive after disembarking. Keep those road legs separate from the time spent aboard when arranging the rental return.

For a direct airport-to-island journey, leave room for collection, the drive to Split ferry port and the required quay arrival allowance. The driving estimate is only the road leg. The crossing comes after boarding, and traffic near Split can extend the approach. For the return journey, leave room between the sailing and the agreed car return.

Returning the car in another city

Split Airport rentals can finish at Dubrovnik, Zadar or Zagreb Airport. Enter your destination for drop-off first; the quotes then include the cost of returning there.

  • The Dubrovnik time is to the airport; the Zadar and Zagreb times are to the city centres, so plan from the airport where you return the car.
  • The quote includes the one-way charge. A booking made for the same place cannot simply end somewhere else, so set the return airport when you search.

Heading for Dubrovnik’s old town instead? The Pile Gate is 247.0 km from Split Airport, about 3 h 45 min over the Pelješac Bridge, and you need a pass to drive in from March to November. A one-way return inside Croatia does not mean the car can be returned abroad.

The route also runs in reverse, so Dubrovnik car rental can end at Split Airport, with the drop-off charge inside the price.

From the capital, car hire in Zagreb can also finish at Split Airport, with that charge shown before you book.

Prices through the year

Split’s twelve-month comparison shows the lowest day rate on week-long hires, each beginning on the fifteenth. Your chosen vehicle, actual dates and collection arrangements determine the booking total.

Split prices for November 2026 to October 2027, each rental lasts a week and begins on the 15th. Enter your dates for current prices.

The chart is a guide to the daily cost across the year, not a quote for every car. A week starting on another day, a longer hire or a different pickup can price differently, so compare the total for your own trip.

Summer drives also need time for queues through Trogir and on the coast road towards Omiš and Makarska. When a coastal day ends with an airport return, leave a margin beyond the clear-road time.

Automatic cars and family travel

Split offers manual and automatic cars, plus vehicles with seven seats or more. Choose the gearbox, seating and child equipment before reserving.

Automatic or manual

Both gearboxes are on offer, and automatics typically cost more. Filter by transmission and size, then check the gearbox on the car you book.

Seats for your party

For a larger party, compare cars with seven seats or more, including vans and minivans. Check the seat count and luggage space on the car itself.

Child equipment

Add child seats, boosters or baby seats from the car’s extras when you book, and check the car you want offers the seat your child needs.

Sharing the driving

Some cars offer a second driver as an extra, priced per car. Add the person when you book and check they meet the car’s age and licence rules.

Car hire insurance in Split

Split cars offer different cover choices. Compare the protection and deposit together before selecting a level.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Available protection. Each Split car lists its own selectable levels. Full Coverage Plus removes accidental-damage liability within its scope where offered, rather than being automatically included.

Standard exclusions. Cabin, windscreen, underbody and wheels are outside standard protection. Negligence, intentional vandalism and deliberate vehicle damage invalidate insurance at every selected level.

Compare security separately. A higher tier lowers some deposits and leaves others unchanged. The excess is your share of insured damage, and a car that needs no credit card can still carry one.

After an insured incident. Contact the Split company immediately. Police documents must follow unless it authorises an exception; failure to perform mandatory reporting cancels cover and makes you responsible.

Each car sets its own terms for Minimum, Basic, Full Coverage and Full Coverage Plus, so keep the cover you chose with your voucher.

What should you bring to pickup?

Your national licence must show Latin-script details and stay valid through your return appointment. Bring the original document; copies and electronic licences are not accepted.

Licence and permit

When your licence is domestic-only, an International Driving Permit is an additional document strongly recommended by the conditions. Bring the national original too, and show the additional permit when requested.

Age and experience

Check the age and experience requirements of the particular car before paying. Similar models can have different conditions, and the company may refuse collection in Split if you do not qualify.

Your voucher confirms the pickup place, time and payment conditions. Keep it with the documents that car hire in Croatia needs at collection.

Local roads and driving

Use paved public roads only. On coastal trips from Split, allow for summer traffic through Trogir, Omiš and Makarska.

Road conditions

  • From 15 November to 15 April, the A1 north of Maslenica needs winter equipment in any weather; no set winter section is near Split. Snow or ice on any road brings the same rule.

Fuel and return

  • Match the pickup fuel level when returning the car. Shortfalls are charged at the company’s rates; extra fuel is not refunded. Return the car clean enough for inspection.

Fuel, tolls and fines are yours to pay. Before a longer drive inland, read Croatia’s speed limits and road rules.

Cross-border trips from Split

Cross-border travel needs permission arranged with customer support. Choose an eligible vehicle and add the relevant cross-border option, and agree the journey before travelling.

From Split Airport, Mostar is 186.5 km and about 2 h 30 min away, plus any border wait, via the A10 to M-17 crossing. A journey through Neum also leaves Croatia, so it needs permission to drive out of Croatia; the Pelješac Bridge route to Dubrovnik stays within Croatia.

Changing or cancelling your booking

Check the deadline on your Split booking before changing your plans. Many rentals include a cancellation option with a deadline of 24 hours before collection.

Cancellation window

Without that option, ordinary vehicles have a cancellation deadline a week before pickup. Give thirty days’ notice for luxury models or convertibles. Late cancellation or changes sacrifice the advance. An unarranged missed collection counts as cancellation beyond the deadline.

Refund request

Email customer support with your voucher attached. The advance comes back within fourteen days, less the 6% payment fee, usually to the account you paid from.

Extending a Croatia booking means contacting the rental company in advance.

Questions about renting in Split

Can I take a small pet in my Split rental?

The rental permits small pets only, enclosed in a travel carrier throughout the journey. Check that the carrier suits the vehicle you are booking.

What happens if the booked car breaks down before pickup?

If the rental company cannot provide it because it breaks down or a force majeure event prevents supply, it must provide a car of the same or a higher class on the same terms and at the same price.

Can I cancel just after confirming my Split booking?

The customer or rental company can cancel within the first 24 hours after confirmation and advance payment. Notice must reach the other party or customer support before pickup; the advance is returned with the payment-service charge deducted.

How do I change the dates of a confirmed Split rental?

Booking changes are made by cancelling the old reservation and making a new one under the general booking terms. Once cancelled, the original car becomes available for someone else to book.

How are motorway tolls paid on a drive from Split?

At a ticket-operated motorway entrance, take a ticket and pay at the exit. Toll plazas accept cash and the cards displayed as accepted there. ENC lanes require a working electronic toll device; the charge depends on distance and vehicle class.
