Car hire at Dubrovnik Airport

Car rental at Dubrovnik Airport from local companies. Compare the full price, the deposit and the cover on every car before you book.

Cheap car rental at Dubrovnik Airport

Each price is the total for seven days, collected and returned at the airport. The deposit and any credit card rule sit under the car.

What size of car do you need at Dubrovnik Airport?

Tiles show the cheapest car in each class for the same week as the deals; a typical car here costs about €45 a day, for airport handovers without an extra charge. A class shows Not quoted when no car of that type was offered.

The cheapest deals need a credit card; most cars here need none and cost more a day. Manual and automatic cars are both on offer, and some seat seven or more.

How do you find your car company at Dubrovnik Airport?

The local company that rents you the car is named on your voucher, with the meeting point and a phone number.

Have the voucher ready

Download the voucher before you fly, in case there is no signal in arrivals. It tells you where the company will meet you.

Keep your phone on

The company may ring or text from the day before pickup, so keep the booking number live until the car is back.

Look the car over

Check the bodywork, wheels and fuel with the company before you sign, and photograph any damage you find.

Meeting arrangements vary from company to company, so do not assume a desk in the terminal.

The cars on this page carry no airport handover charge at midday. City delivery in Dubrovnik is a separate option with its own charge.

Collecting and returning your car

  2. Delayed? Let the company know your new landing time.
  3. Flying home return the car where the voucher says, then go to check-in.
Need help in the airport? Ask your airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before you fly, so assistance is ready.

Driving away from Dubrovnik Airport

  1. The coast road the D8 runs west to the city and on towards Ston.
  2. Lights by day are compulsory from 1 November to 31 March.
  3. Old town traffic a city system limits cars near the centre from March to November.
Heading north? The A1 motorway does not reach Dubrovnik yet. The coast road leads north to the Pelješac Bridge.

Can you hire a car at Dubrovnik Airport without a credit card?

Yes, on some cars. Others here take the deposit on a credit card only, so check the payment line before you choose.

When a credit card is needed, bring the physical card, embossed and in the main driver’s name. A debit card works only where the booking and voucher list it. Many cars in Croatia that need no credit card take a debit card for the deposit.

Car rental in Croatia with no deposit does not always mean no excess, so check both figures.

How far is Dubrovnik Airport from the old town?

Pile Gate is about half an hour away and Cavtat about ten minutes. Times assume clear roads, so allow longer in summer.

Rules of the road in southern Croatia

You drive on the right. Limits on signs override the national ones.

Speed limits

Unless signed otherwise, the limit is 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways.

Belts and airbags

Everyone wears a seat belt. Never fit a rear-facing child seat in front of an active airbag on the passenger side.

Kit the law asks for

Croatian law requires cars to carry a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a reflective vest. Check they are in the car at pickup.

After an accident

Dial 112 if anyone is hurt. Then call the company straight away and ask the police for a report, or the cover may not apply.

Paved public roads only

The rental conditions allow paved public roads and nothing else, whichever car you choose.

Unsurfaced tracks on the peninsulas and in the hills behind the coast are off limits.

Montenegro, Neum and other borders

Leaving Croatia needs a cross-border option on the car and permission from the help desk.

Some cars offer one option for neighbouring EU countries and one for non-EU neighbours such as Montenegro, each priced on the car. The Karasovići crossing is about 25 minutes from the airport, plus any queue. The coast road through Neum enters Bosnia and Herzegovina; the Pelješac Bridge route stays in Croatia. One-way hire into another country is not offered.

Can you drop a Dubrovnik Airport car in Split?

Yes, at Split Airport, on cars that offer the route. Zagreb Airport is possible too, and the drop-off charge is part of the price.

Set the return airport

Enter the other airport as the return place when you search, so the drop-off charge is in the total you compare.

Confirm the meeting point

Ask the company where to hand the car back at the other airport, and leave time for the check before your flight.

Changes need approval

A new return place or time must be agreed with the company first. Leaving the car somewhere else is not allowed.

The drive north to Split Airport uses the Pelješac Bridge and the A1 motorway, staying in Croatia all the way. Zagreb is a long day, so plan a stop on the way.

Dubrovnik Airport rates month by month

Bars show the lowest daily price for a seven-day airport hire starting mid-month. They guide you; they are not fixed rates.

N/A: no airport cars are listed yet for that month.

Fewer cars are listed for next summer so far, so those months can change a lot. Look again nearer your trip.

You pay for whole 24-hour days, and part of a day counts as a full one. To keep the car longer, tell the company before the booking ends.

Families, groups and extra drivers

Settle drivers and seats before you fly; adding them at the handover is not always possible.

More than one driver

Add any extra driver to the booking where the car offers it. Every driver must meet that car’s age and licence rules.

Seats for children

Under 150 cm, a child travels in a child seat or booster. Book one per child as an extra on the car.

Seven seats or more

Larger cars and vans can be booked at the airport. With every seat taken, boot space shrinks, so check your luggage.

Pets in carriers

Small pets are welcome if they ride in a travel carrier the whole time. Larger animals are not allowed.

Deposit, excess and cover levels on airport cars

The starting cover is not the same on every car here. Compare the level, the deposit and the excess together.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Starting cover varies. Some cars start on Basic (CDW); others already include Full Coverage or Full Coverage Plus in the price shown.

Full Coverage is not always zero. On some cars, the paid Full Coverage level lowers the deposit and the excess but leaves both above zero.

All-in cars exist. A few cars carry no deposit and no excess at any cover level. Check the figures on the car itself.

Standard cover does not pay for damage to wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. Vandalism or neglect voids it, and then damage cover and excess limits no longer protect you.

Documents every driver should pack

Your original national licence must be valid to the last day of hire and use Latin letters. Copies and app licences are not accepted.

Driving permit

With a licence valid only at home, carry an International Driving Permit too. It goes alongside the licence and never replaces it.

Minimum age

The minimum age and years licensed are listed on each car and can differ between similar models. Check them for every driver.

UK drivers can use a photocard licence in Croatia for up to one year. A paper licence may need updating or a permit alongside it.

Bringing the car back before your flight

Plan for traffic on the coast road and the return check.

Fuel

  • Top up to the level you started with. If the tank is lower, the company bills the gap at its own price, and a fuller tank is not paid for.

Cleanliness

  • If the car comes back too dirty for the company to inspect it properly, it is washed and you pay for that.

You pay for fuel, parking, fines and tolls. A deposit can be held for 30 to 45 days by some companies, and later fines or unpaid tolls are taken from it.

Cancelling or changing a booking

A change of dates or car means cancelling and booking again.

Cancellation deadline

Notice runs to seven days, or thirty for luxury cars and convertibles. If you took the short-notice option, a day before pickup still counts. Later than that, the advance goes.

Refund of the advance

Write in with the voucher. Within fourteen days the advance goes back to the account you paid from, less 6% for payment handling.
