Car hire in Faro

Hire a car at Faro Airport (FAO) for your Algarve trip. Every car takes a deposit, some accept a debit card, and cover is shown before you book.

Compare Faro Airport cars

Compare the price with the deposit and card rules. The cheapest car does not always have the lowest deposit.

Choose an Algarve car by seats and gearbox

Tiles show the cheapest day rate per class for a week from Faro Airport. Those low rates come with a credit card rule and a deposit from €1,250; the middle offer is about €37 a day.

Faro has manual and automatic cars, including nine-seaters. “Or similar” means a comparable car may replace the one pictured; check luggage space with all the seats you need in use.

Where is the Faro rental meeting?

These cars are for Faro Airport pickup. Your voucher gives the meeting point and the company’s phone number.

Airport pickup

Keep your voucher handy when you land, follow your company’s meeting instructions and call if you cannot find it.

Night pickup and return

Enter both times, including an early flight home. Some night bookings charge extra at return.

Checks at pickup

Note the fuel and the car’s condition, check your passengers’ equipment and ask how the airport return works.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Faro?

It depends on the car. A few Faro cars accept debit for the deposit, but the deposit is still taken, and never in cash.

The deposit card must be physical, embossed and in the main driver’s name. Debit must be accepted for your car; check separately how you can pay the balance.

You pay 15 to 20% online to book. A company may hold the deposit for 21 to 30 days after the car is back, in case fines or unpaid tolls turn up.

Airport journeys along the Algarve

Times start at Faro Airport on clear roads. Allow extra for luggage, meeting the company, stops and parking.

Faro town is ten kilometres from the airport, about twenty-five minutes.

The Vilamoura drive uses the EN125. Vila Real de Santo António is 69.3 kilometres away, about one hour fifteen minutes, and Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio 281.4 kilometres, about three hours thirty minutes.

A22 travel and tolls towards Lisbon

The A22 along the Algarve coast is toll-free on the national road operator’s toll map. Other motorways out of the Algarve can still charge tolls.

  • The A2 north to Lisbon has toll booths: take a ticket on entry and pay by card or cash at the exit. A rental toll device can pay electronically.
  • Agree the toll-device terms at pickup. There may be a separate fee, a toll deposit or card details, and these are not in the car price.
  • Read the parking signs where you stay and visit. Fuel, parking and fines are yours to pay, even when airport pickup has no extra charge.

Driving preparation for the south coast

Drive on the right, follow the signs and keep to paved public roads.

Road speed signs

The EN125 has signposted speed cameras. Drive times are estimates, not target speeds through towns, junctions or roadworks.

Passenger restraints

Everyone wears a seat belt. Children under twelve and shorter than 135 centimetres need a suitable child seat, with a few exceptions.

Vehicle equipment

At pickup, find the vest and warning triangle. Set your route before you drive and use the phone hands-free only.

Distance allowance

Check whether your car has a daily kilometre limit. Count trips to the western Algarve and the drive back before choosing.

Can a Faro booking end at Lisbon Airport?

Some Faro cars can be returned at Lisbon Airport. The extra cost may be built into the price, so no drop-off fee does not mean free.

Select Lisbon Airport

Choose Lisbon Airport as your return place when you search; hotel returns are different.

Price the itinerary

Compare totals with your airports, dates and times entered.

Plan departure time

Follow the Lisbon return directions and allow time for fuel and the return check.

Faro Airport prices through the year

Each bar is the lowest daily price for a week’s hire from the 15th, with the car taken and returned at Faro Airport.

N/A: no car was listed for that month.

Even a few hours is charged as a full day, and any part of another day adds a day. Agree an extension before return; a new flight time does not change your booking.

Which seats and extras does your group need?

Group size

Choose the seats you need, then check luggage space with them in use. The photo does not promise a particular layout.

Seats for children

Match the child seat to your child’s size, baby seat or booster, and make sure it is fitted before you leave.

A second driver

Add every driver to the agreement. Each needs the age and licence years your car requires.

Travelling with a pet

Small pets can travel if they stay in a carrier all the way, so allow space for one when you pick the car.

Faro protection and accident obligations

Choose from the cover levels your car offers. Some Faro cars offer fewer than the four levels.

Minimum coverageIncluded as standard
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Damage to your hire car (not included)
Basic coverage
  • Limited collision cover (CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
  • Glass and tyre damage (not included)
Full Coverage
  • Limited driver liability (Super CDW) (included)
  • Damage to other vehicles (TPL) (included)
Full Coverage Plus
  • Full damage cover (included)
  • No driver liability for accident damage (included)

Standard scope: Standard cover excludes wheels, windscreen, interior and underside. Check what any upgrade adds.

Reporting duty: Report any insured incident to the company straight away and get a police report, unless it agrees otherwise. Miss either and you are not covered.

Misuse: You lose cover for neglect or deliberate vandalism, and buying more does not open unpaved roads or a trip that was not agreed.

Available levels: Full Coverage Plus is not usually offered on Faro cars. Check the cover and your accident liability on your car.

Documents for Faro Airport pickup

Your licence must be in Latin script and valid until return. Bring the original; digital versions and photocopies are not accepted.

Supporting permit

With a domestic-only licence, an IDP is strongly recommended. Bring it with your national licence and have both ready at pickup.

Driver qualification

Check the age and licence years for your car. Similar models can differ, and the company can refuse pickup if you do not qualify.

Return fuel and vehicle condition

Fuel at handback

  • Bring the fuel back to its pickup level. Missing fuel costs the company’s rate, and you are not paid for extra.

Condition check

  • The company checks the car at return. If dirt gets in the way, you pay for washing; allow time to talk through any damage.

Arrange permission before driving to Seville

Let the company know before you leave Portugal, so the papers are ready. Check your booking allows Spain; a paid extra is not blanket permission.

Faro Airport to Seville is 202.8 kilometres, about two hours forty-five minutes plus any border wait. Permission to visit Spain is not a Spanish return, so plan to bring the car back to Portugal.

The car cannot take a ferry to or from the islands. Book a separate car for an island stay. For Madeira, car rental in Madeira with no deposit is offered on some cars.

Cancellation timing for a Faro reservation

Notice to cancel is 7 days, or 30 for luxury cars and convertibles; the cancellation option cuts it to 24 hours.

Eligible refund

Email support with your voucher to cancel. Refunds take 14 days from your request, minus 6% of the advance for payment processing.

Missed deadline

A late cancellation or a no-show without warning costs the advance. Changes work as a cancellation plus a new booking, under the same rules.

Faro arrival questions

Does the A22 still charge tolls?

No, the A22 is toll-free on the national road operator’s toll map. The A2 towards Lisbon still charges tolls. For a trip north, some Faro cars can be returned at Lisbon Airport, where car hire in Lisbon begins.

Can I leave a cash deposit?

Do not assume so. Check the deposit method for your car; cash for the rental does not mean cash for the deposit.

Are seven-seat cars offered?

Yes, Faro has larger cars. Filter by seats and check there is room for luggage too.

Is a late return charged like daytime?

Not always. Some Faro cars add a charge for a night return, so enter your real return time.

Can I extend after my flight changes?

Agree the extra time with the company before your rental ends. Changing your flight does not extend the car booking.
